Well, I finally did it gang. I've upgraded from my slow-moving PC to a shiny new MacBook! I’ve only had it a week and I’ve already spent countless hours video chatting about nothing. I’ve taken millions of pointless pictures in cool sepia and thermal tones just because...and of course, I’ve made some home “movies” along the way. Now that I have the ability to create serious films (such as my untitled project from this morning in which the new Mac captured my bff and I discussing the previous night’s events in my kitchen) I’m in need of some cool tunes to score my masterpieces.
As some of you may know it costs a lot of money to use tracks by major label artists for TV and film. But let’s face it, there are a lot of amazing, undiscovered artists out there just waiting for you to play their music in your next student film. However, if you don’t have the time or energy to find those gems, fear not my friend, because famed electronic artist Moby has come to the rescue! This kind soul has created, Moby Gratis, an extension of his website dedicated to free music originally composed by Moby himself.
His intentions were to provide original compositions for student filmmakers and new Mac owners like me. All one needs to do is sign up for a free account and you’re ready to get started. I believe there are roughly 90 compositions already uploaded to the site with more to be added soon. All music is free as long as it is used for non-commercial purposes. (If my untitled project were to take off and sell to a big fancy studio, then I’d have to pay the licensing fees.) But the cool part is, all the proceeds go directly to the Humane Society. How sweet is Moby?
Keeping with the “electronic” theme of this blog (Moby and my new baby), we can’t let this Sunday go by without discussing some L Word jams. A majority of tonight’s episode was scored with ezgirl’s stellar music but there was one wonderfully placed track that deserves a mention--Freezepop’sSwimming Pool. Hailing from Massachusetts, the band describes its sound as, “kinda like kraftwerk, meets ladytron, who dates abba, who spoons with takako minekawa [and] whose parents are the human league.” I’ve been taking a listen to a few of their songs from their latest record, Future, Future, Future Perfect and let me just say, I think ezgirl found the best track out of the bunch.
If you’re looking for a great underground, female-fronted band may I recommend Grand Ole Party instead. Let me add a disclaimer--their recorded stuff isn’t the greatest. It’s their live show that will get you—hence the YouTube video below. A friend of mine invited me to their show a few weeks back. The only thing I knew about the band at that time was that their manager was interested in working with my friend’s band and she was going to the show in support of her potential new roster-mates. Lucky for me, the band was insane (in a good way). My mouth dropped to the floor and literally stayed there the whole night. As my friend put it, their lead singer Kristen, “has a set of pipes!”
Wassup Cynthia!? Fab blog as usual. I think this is the best place to chill on ourchart. Especially for music lovers. I am liking to front lady of Ole Party. It's a weird concept seeing the lead on the drums, boy does that take some good coordination skills. I've tried singing and playing the drums, It wasn't pretty. So I am taken back by her talent.
Here are some bands that I like with elctro feel.
I'm not sure if they are as big over in the states, but over here they are well known: The Klaxons who have a fantastic album called Gravity's Rainbow. Who sort of fall into the category of Psychedelic / Progressive / Pop though I think they are much more complicated than all those genres put together. Plus like Ole Party you have to see them to properly understand them. I heard Mark Ronson is working on their next album. Bound to be good stuff.
I am loving Sam Sparro check out his song Black & Gold. Too hot for my ears to handle. Reminds me a little of Gnarls Barkley (who's new album is on it's way-I can't wait!)
And something fresh, a band called I Haunt Wizards a new young, a fresher than fresh new band. Original music. They are unique, talented and probably the best thing I have listened to this year.
There I said it!

i admit that, as the first brazilian in ourchart, i was a bit disapointed with 'bonde do role' being the first brazilian song in the show... We have so many great musicians, artists, bans and peformers down here....
(and i don't mean CSS... those girls are a great band and performers but not musicians... kind of the difference betwen Peaches and PJ Harvey - and i like both of them!).
Totally Congrats on the new macbook. I actually got mine on Ebay, so I ended up paying a few hundred less for it.
It's changed my life, Once you go MAC, you NEVER go back!!
grand ole party and rilo kiley at the house of blues. one of the first concerts my girlfriend and i went to, i loved watching her sing her lungs out to every song. im glad you put them in your blog.
Congrats on the macbook, you should think about upgrading to a pro in a couple of years
but, i was wondering what the song is at the end of 509 when everyone is having sex and who sings it?? I love it, but I can't find it anywhere!
Congrats on the MacBook I love mine!!! I just wanted to say that I really enjoy reading Listen Up after every L Word episode!! I saw grand ole party live and it was such a great concert!!
Hey, congrats on the MacBook - moving that way myself as soon as my ship comes in! Note: Had a great friend who a couple of weeks ago bought an entry level MacBook on line - it was one of 1/10,000(,000,000?) that had some unrepairable glitch...... he took it back to the Apple store in Denver - Hon, they gave him a free upgraded 'puter! Being a PC user since forever, he is absolutely blown away with his new MacBook for graphics and music - will never go any other way! Thanks for the Moby link (fun and for the greater good)! I'm gonna borrow that upgraded 'puter and make me some tunes!!!!!
I've been a Mac user since the early 80's. You'll love them ... they don't crash, get viruses, or drain your brain. They just work well and happily. You, especially, will love both iTunes and Garage Band, not to mention iPhoto and the rest of the suite.
Go play at an Apple store and decide what you like, but check out the "Special Deals" on the bottom left of the online Store screen to see the refurbished Macs: http://store.apple.com/1-800-MY-APPLE/WebObjects/AppleStore.woa/wa/RSLID...
I saved about $400 on my new 24"iMac. It's sweet and fast (especially with that cup of Earl Grey and honey in its keyboard).

Thanks for the tips, Alix, I can always stand saving some bucks! You know, I forgot to ask you what type of tea you were drinking at the time of mishap - it does make a difference, you know. Glad you're up and going again. Yeah, Martin, told me I would love Garage Band - gotta keep the music flowing!
for supporting my new investment...i suffer from buyer's remorse even when i buy gum ;-) If we ever meet TexasChart, we'll have to record a song together on the new mac!
