Backstage at The Vagina Monologues

This past weekend, thousands of people gathered in the Superdome in New Orleans for the V to the 10th event, the tenth anniversary of the V-Day campaign to end violence against women and girls around the world. Activists and performers joined Hurricane Katrina survivors from New Orleans and the Gulf South during two days of consciousness- raising at the Superlove event in the Dome- It all culminated Saturday night in an electric performance of The Vagina Monologues. Ilene Chaiken and L Word cast members joined a diverse cast of feminists backstage beforehand at the New Orleans Arena as V-Day leader Eve Ensler gave her pregame rally speech in a hallway usually populated by hulking Hornets players...you could feel the nerves and the excitement. And the love.

everytime...

I miss the connection that was all around us. Empowering, motivating, and inspiring (the kind that makes us tingle inside). Five days out of the week I drive into New Orleans for work; back and forth from Hammond Louisiana...I feel like the awareness, the empowering, the inspiring, the hoping, the believing is just slipping away. The feeling is frustrating. So many of our friends has asked and wondered if my partner and I are going to the west coast to legalize our relationship; my reply "What for? It's not legal here." Then having to deal w/ that frustrating feeling again of leaving a place that would be accepting and encouraging to the south where change is slow. Nolie (my partner) has to remind me that moving away is just admitting to guilt; which in this situation there is "no liberty!"

Thank you to

Whoever takes care of the technical things! The pictures are there now.

Is there another way to see these photos?

All I see is this _

Thanks for sharing

Wish I could've been there to show my love & support ;)

From all of us in New Orleans

From all of us in New Orleans, thank you for bringing this event to our wounded but wonderful city, and lending your voices to this most worthwhile cause.

My only disappointment was that I could not be 200 yards closer to give each of you a great big hug for your love and support to our community.

v to the tenth

It was moving. There were so many people who shed sympathy tears when they played the video about the Congo women. Eve pretty much covered as many topic and as much issues through other peoples view. For example when Calpernia Addams read out "they beat the boy out of me;" I was thinking "wow; I had never thought to think about what she was going through."

Thanks Eve, volunteer, and everyone for bringing this to New Orleans.

Simply Inspiring!

Simply Inspiring!

Jane as Bette's Mom S6!

Jane Fonda.........Jane Fonda..........Jane Fonda!

WOW! In her seventh decade and continuing to be present and speak out for women and humanitarian issues that concern all on the planet. How great it is to see her in these photos and with Jennifer and Ilene no less! A trifecta of independent thinkers and strong women to be sure.

To see Jane in S6 in some relation to Bette - so that Bette will finally confront her inner demons, this is my only request. My IDEAL scenario is Jane as Bette's mom, although I realize that will take some fancy writing as her character is supposedly deceased. Or, if not as Bette's mom, how about as her aunt or therapist maybe?

Maybe, but she can't be Bett's mom

Bette's mom is dead

There's a thin line...

Yes - I did mention that

I must have bored you meffle with my post. I did mention at the end about just what you mention here. I guess I'll have to try to spice up my future posts to keep you interested to the end. : )

Yes, I missed that

But it's probably not you. My wife says I don't really read anything and she's probably right, and that's probably the reason I'm having such a hard time writing this stupid paper, because I want to scan the research rather than read it.

On the other hand, maybe I'm just looking for mistakes to pounce on and in doing so, leapt to an incorrect conclusion something I frequently accuse others of doing.

Either way, my aopologies.

I've always thought Dixie Carter would have been excellent as Bette's mother, but the same point I made (albeit erroneously) to you applies.

There's a thin line...

Scanning Happens

No apology necessary...scanning happens. :)

But one thing I wouldn't do on OC is throw out an idea that I know is incongruent with the storyline of the show without noting it myself. With as many die hard fans that are on this site, I know it would be pointed out post haste (to quote Peggy Peabody), but of course in the best spirit. If I ever thought I was a dedicated fan, after reading that 15 screen or so "idea list" from the Tibetter's, I clearly understand now that they are in an entirely different league of fans of the show. WOW! Those folks are serious. What dedication and devotion!

Dixie Carter, hmmmm never thought of that one. I think she's great too. Strong and spicy - maybe, maybe...

You and me both, Denpalen

Join me over here at the chump-fan table.

I'm like the rubberneckers on the road -- I'm not a witness, I just like to look! LOL

There's a thin line...

Chump-Fan Table! - What!

OMG, "chump-fan table" HA HA HA HA HA - and I certainly do resemble that comment!

Thanks for the laugh meffle :)

Yeah i thoughts Bette's mom

Yeah i thoughts Bette's mom was dead lol, Maybe she could be tina's mom who like Tina fell out with years ago, because of her relationship with Bette but then comes back, because of something or another.Because i can see them being so different, for example Charlie(J-lo) and Jane Fonda in the mother in law.

loadsa luv always MeH <3

Wel, that's a kernal of an idea here

What if you marry the Tina's mom thing with the Dixie Carter idea. Then we find that Tina's attraction to Bette has a lot to do with Bette's similarity to Tina's mom. There's even a video on Youtube somewhere comparing Bette to Dixie Carter's Designing women character.

There's a thin line...

J to the Beals

Wooooooow! Look at those arms on J. Beals! Quite amazing! I personally believe she received those from Bette... haha! These are some great pictures. It is always cool to see what goes on behind the scenes. We really appreciate it! :-)

Angela, I love how you

Angela, I love how you captured the moments backstage. I do think of all the women who had a chance to tell their stories that day. Amazing grace.

Alex probably didn't have

Alex probably didn't have time to accuse Ellen of anything as Ellen was hustling her ass out of her relationship and home, to get Portia in. Ellen is a real stand up woman, and I don't mean a comedian.

WHY can't they do anything like this...THEY would be the awesomeness of V to the 10th, not Ellen and Portia..in Portland OR!!!!!!

Was that...

...Doris Roberts! WHY don't I live in NOLA?!? or WHY can't they do something like that in CHICAGO?! Hey, at least we have smart boot-legging lesbians out there! Way to go ladies!
P.S. Alexandra Hedison...isn't that Ellen's ex? Didn't she try to accuse Ellen of something?

Peace out, Girl Scouts!
Val

jennifer

lord, those arms on jennifer....she's starting to look like Madonna....forget Jane Fonda playing her mother...I'll raise my hand anytime. I think Jennifer realizes that she is "hot"..showing off those gorgeous arms. come on, she is more confident now than before the L Word....that show has brought out the best in her. She has certainly made her mark. Can't imagine why any of those women want to quit the show..how many good roles come around for women...there is so much texture to this show. Okay, the writing is not always great, but it sure creates interesting rlationships and real life stories.I think Ilene and the writers can continue to write good stories indefinitely. It's not Showtime, its the crew that want to end the L Word. I would love to be a part of an show that gives so much back to people--what a gift. What a gift to be loved by sooooo many people. To make a statement, to change lives..Oopps
Better stop now.

Well

Here's the thing. We don't know it's not Showtime that want the show to end - we actually don't know what lead to the decision, it's most likely a whole lot of little things.

If it was the producers, well, Drama only has a finite story to tell really. Often shows go on and on forever and they become stale. Ending before that is always welcome.

If it was Showtime, anything could have lead to that decision. Including the fact that Canada is not as cheap to film in as it was when the show started (still cheaper then LA though).

If it was the cast - well here is a few things. Jennifer and Laurel are parents who may want to spend more time with their kids without shipping them around. Leisha may want to dedicate herself full time to her music and group Uh Huh Her. Kate may want to make more independent films or get back the theatre.

Why would the cast want to move on - because they have lives outside of the show and may want to develop them more. Doesn't mean they love the show any less.

Who really knows.

Anyways I agree, Jennifer has fantastic arms.

Cannot believe I missed

Cannot believe I missed this, 2 hours away and i had no idea , teach me not to sign on for a couple of weeks...DAMM!!!
