No More Beatings No More Rape...

You have been reading our blogs and watching our video diary about the incredible V To The 10th event that took place in the Superdome in New Orleans from April 11-12. Some of you lucky ones were there.

It was the 10th anniversary celebration of V-Day, the global movement to end violence against women and girls launched by Eve Ensler's The Vagina Monologues. There will be thousands of V-Day events held around the world this year, but this was the BIG one; V-day chose the location to honor the women of New Orleans and the Gulf South.

It was a complex and consciousness-raising gathering of activists, performers and speakers who came together with a common purpose. But the women of New Orleans and the Gulf South were the event's heart center; 1,200 women of the Katrina diaspora returned home for the event and the local activists of the Katrina Warriors Network brought the community into the movement.

The Superdome, a site of suffering during the Hurricane Katrina disaster, was transformed into a vaginal, pink "Superlove" space. I roamed around this space, crossing paths with the inspiring people who had come from near and far. Take the next three minutes, sit down, put on some headphones and come meet some of them on this tour of the "Superlove."

When you are done watching, please go to the V-Day website and dig deeper into these activists and this movement.

Were you there? Are you involved in V-Day? I hope you will share your stories and send links to your Vagina Warrior worlds.

It's so amazing that this

It's so amazing that this movement is still going strong and gaining increasing support! So awesome.

@Angela Jimenez: It's so true that it's sad that we need them. I'm not sure that this sort of awareness will ever be not needed, unfortunately, but I think there are so many more positive messages than before

Angela, thanks for posting this. I appreciate it and I wish any who were there in New Orleans would post their thoughts.

What's wrong with the world these days?

if we take a look at the news all over the world these days, it's all about rape, incest relationships that were mostly rap, beatings and killings of women everywhere.

What's happening to us?!

editor

it always happened

the point is historically it hasn't been fought against and covered and talked about...visibility and discussion is the key.

moonie

yeah, i agree with that. these things, like rape as a tactic of war, have been going on since the dawn of time and this is a mobilizing to refuse to ignore them.

it always ...

happened and im afraid to say so but ...
it always will keep happening
(does not mean one should give up and not do a darn thing)

people will never know what is going on behind closed doors
and windows

and yes people might think or feel like it is happening more
i for one doubth that i just think we hear see read etc. more about it.

and even so things like this storie are and always will still be posible

http://www.google.nl/search?hl=nl&q=austria+dad+locks+up+daughter+for+24...

proves once again the reality of human nature

I know but...

I wonder if it's indicating an increase in issues of the sort also.

It's just sad to know that no matter how advanced a society is, there are still people out there who commit such horrible deeds. I used to attribute things like that to lack of education, money, good parental guidance, etc. you name it. Now it's clear that it's not limited to one class, society, or even religion.
That is heartbreaking.

Where is annie lennox when you need her?! Hey hey I saved the world today

My faint heart bleeds

Violence and discrimination against women are topics very close to my life and to my heart. Seeing such precious creatures as women being trampled and disrespected sadens and angers me. I see it happen daily and have to live with it all my life. I often dispair for the future because of how myself and fellow women have to fight just to get some resprct and basic human freedoms.
Then I see such events as V to the 10th and find myself with a warm fuzzy feeling in my heart and tears in my eyes. In a world full of so much pain and uglyness there is hope. There are people like Eve who manages to make our plight a visible one.
And just the fact that we become visible may make us more human in the eyes of a violent scary world.
I have to salute all women everywhere and especially those who take this war out of the backrooms and into he streets.
Thank you

yeah

amen you know it is great we have events like this, but then it makes me sad that we need them. it's like a party we have to throw for ourselves which is both a radical, cool thing and something we should not have to do. we should be celebrated all the damn time.
