Ladies, ladies, ladies… it’s been a while, I know, but this blog promises to make up for the wait. And I promise to make up for the wait with um, flowers? Dinner? Music?
Since we last spoke, I went on a three-day Coachella bender and learned a few things along the way like one should never wear sandals to an outdoor music festival in the desert, nor should they ever wear all black in 120-degree weather! Aside from those setbacks, I realized how much I love Goldfrapp and how amazing she is live.
I fell in love with Sia all over again. Even after all of these years, her infamous "Breathe Me" track gets me every time.
After hanging on stage with My Morning Jacket, I decided to give Southern-inspired rock a chance.

And after pretending I was in Tegan and Sara for 45 minutes, I realized good things never get old.
I danced to Prince under the stars and sweated to M.I.A. in a crowded tent. I decided that eating a slice of pizza was more important than catching Portishead, then realized what a big mistake that was as I heard songs from their new album Third in the distance while eating my slice. I noticed that I rock a better robot when Kraftwerk is playing on a giant stage. But the best discovery… three days in the desert is only as fun as the posse you keep, and mine was quite possibly the baddest! I brought along a few familiar faces, like…
In the last few months, I’ve made many a mix tape, all of which have included songs from The Duke Spirit’s 2008 release Neptune, an album that is, in my opinion, one of the best releases this year. Check out the track that got me hooked, "The Step and the Walk."
I also raided the music library of Dangerbird Records, the oh-so-hip indie label conveniently located next door to the OurChart offices, and am thankful that the band Sea Wolf is on their roster. Their album Leaves in the River is what takes me home every day. The track "Middle Distance Runner" will make you cry the good tears.
And finally, I got to relive my childhood when I went to the New Kids on the Block rehearsal at the House of Blues! And yes, I still think that Donnie Walhberg is a good choice for a “favorite.”
I think that brings us to the present. So, what am I listening to now, you ask? Oh god, I actually think I might need to update the “Guilty Pleasures” section of my OurChart profile for this one! Okay, okay… she’s gotten approval from Madonna which, according to Perez Hilton, is like being “blessed by the Pope” and she plays the guitar. That’s cool, right? Whatever. There is nothing cool or indie about this, it just makes me wanna hit the club whenever I hear it!! Is that so wrong?
Please don’t hate me! I know some of you will want to know that you can catch Katy Perry this summer on the Van’s Warped Tour! Stop lying to yourselves, you know you like it! For those of you in Los Angeles, I will be winning back my street cred by attending the Jealous Girlfriends/Sea Wolf show next week at the Echoplex!
So how was that? You still want jewelry, don’t you? Fine!
Because you have just taken me on such a personalized tour of the major cultural music events in our country over the last few months--I do not have to suffer the sweat, grime, and getting my pedicure muddy of actually going myself. Thank G for CG. Will pleeeeaaaaaase do more of this real soon? Now that I've gotten a taste, I want more.
And we're just gonna leave that last comment at that.
Cyber love. If that's appropriate to say.
x or x? depending on how you want to take this blog comment.
Yep. I made it out alive. Got rained on and slept on a wet sleeping bag in a half soaked tent on Friday night/Saturday morning.
All in all, it was pretty cool. My first year going, I've been trying to go for 2 years and just missed it for various reasons.
About half the bands that were at Coachella were there and that included Tegan and Sara, My Morning Jacket, MIA, and a few others.
T&S was definitely tied for my fav show along with Ben Folds who is ever the crowd pleaser. Pearl Jam and Metallica rocked it out. The Raconteurs were absolutely PHENOMENAL if you like Jack White at all, you should think about checking them out!
While Kanye was the biggest disappointment of them all. He went on 2 hours late and by the time he was on stage, someone had thrown a glow stick so hard it hit his main screen and left a color mark down it. Pretty funny to see but we were all about to pass out since we had stayed up all night waiting for him. It was dawn by the time he started.
Oh well, we didn't stay for Sunday. I came home (which is only 30 mins up the road), took a shower, and passed out on my bed.
i am absolutely jealous..I've been trying to head to Bonnaroo for a while too!! And I couldn't agree with you more, The Raconteurs are absolutely phenomenal...they were the biggest surprise for me at Coachella!
so i've been hearing rumors that M.I.A's last gig was Bonnaroo...apparently she's "retiring" did you hear any gossip around tent city?? say it ain't so M.I.A!!!
I did read that M.I.A. has had to cancel all of her upcoming UK and European dates but I had no idea there were rumors that M.I.A is retiring!? That would really blow!
I didn't hear anything said about MIA actually, which isn't that surprising because a lot of people around our tents were just guys and they were not interested in that at all. I had to miss her though b/c i was at Rilo Kiley. We could actually hear her from where our tent was b/c it was so close to CenteRoo. But no, most of the rumors that fly are about the SuperJam and who will play at that and stuff. All in all, it could've been better if we'd had more people with us and stuff. But the shows that I did catch were pretty kick ass. Most people bring their A-game there I do believe. I felt really bad for T&S though b/c there were some major sound problems and feedback happening for them. They didn't really even get it all sorted out until halfway through the set.
So Cynnie.... I liked the "excerpt" from your video blog with Cassie trying to sound like a professional "host"!! I noticed the gum in her mouth, a la Britney Spears.
I also loved the pic of GiGi pondering the stage from such a distance! Nice profile, GiGi!!
Don't you ever turn the camera on yourself? Oh yeah... you were too faint from the heat, cause you wore black in the desert and you were trying to protect your dirty, dusty, grassy toes, cause you wore sandals amongst the masses.
So glad to know that New Kids On The Block just keep on going; rather like that Energizer Bunny!
A woman after my own heart. Goldfrapp, Sia, MMJ... are you single?? Cuz I think I'm in love. I was at Coachella too- Portishead was probably the most beautifully sounding performance I've ever heard! Please keep up the bloggin- there are too few bloggers out there with such good taste!!!
.....cause I told her the other day the new things coming out are just not gettin' it for me - must be my mood or something. Anyway, I've been hittin' the 90's stuff lately - Anastacia, Tina Arena, Sade - listening to Samantha James, Natasha Bedingfield, Portishead, Massive Attack today - all over the musical spectrum. Chris Botti's been my chill of choice lately - I was pleasantly surprised by Shelby Lynne's go at jazz with her Just A Little Lovin' cd. I've been thinking I'm gonna get some ticks and catch the James Blunt/Sheryl Crow concert in Dallas in August - think that one'll be worth it!
I don't know, Tex. I always thought maybe I should get a mood ring, but I have a feeling those things don't work. Do what I do. Let everyone know your monthly chart, and just part the red sea. *sigh* And those that like to fuck with you knowing what time of the month it is, ...deserve that bitch bite!
But I've been swinging on my radio, as of late, in the direction of 70's classic/southern rock. That an country.
I'm finally back in my crib - sleeping in my own rack - eatin' Tex/Mex! God bless Texas!
I wish I could use PMS and the big red machine as a mood excuse - did away with all innereds female back in 2000. Sooooooo nice!
.....and country - just can't go there myself - some of the progressive stuff, maybe. But then, heck, just listen to pop......and send me that calendar - I love to be forewarned!
That reminds me, I don't why, but it reminds me - have you found one of those minimetal license plates with my name on it!
Since you've been into 70's music - here you go, Hon!
I can't believe you saw all these amazing bands, I'm so jealous! you were missing for a while but its fine =D
best way to make up is TO TAKE ME TO A FREAKING CONCERT! haha that's what we all want! =P
