Last Thursday I had a chance to sit down with the news editor of the Advocate, Kerry Eleveld. Eleveld is an award-winning journalist who specializes in election politics. This winter, Kerry had the opportunity to interview Barack Obama in person and was the only journalist from the gay press that was invited to do so. In this interview we chatted about the implications of gay marriage on the economy its potential impact on California voters who face the marriage ballot in November. She also shares her insights into Obama and her experience meeting him.
Eleveld’s cover story in the Advocate this month is an investigative piece on the Gill Action Fund, an LGBT political advocacy group. Gill has been working to bolster our gay rights at the grassroots and state level. They have thrown their support behind pro-gay city council people and state legislators nationwide. As Eleveld explains, most of our gay rights, as we’ve seen with gay marriage, have occurred on the state level as the feds continue to ignore us. The intriguing facet of the Gill Action Fund is that many of the gays and lesbians involved had early careers working for GOP strategists. Gill has begun to turn the tactics used by the right against LGBTs in our favor.
I hope to bring you more discussions like this, but I have to apologize for the camera work and rough editing. Let's just say Gigi Nicolas did not shoot or edit this video. Speaking of Gigi, I wanted to make special mention that her documentary My Address that she and Kate Moennig shot last year is on the LGBT film festival circuit. A screening of My Address was held at the Provincetown Film Festival last Saturday. You can still watch it here on OurChart.

Thanks Grace. Very good
Thanks Grace. Very good interview. I do believe the GLBT community is making progress at the state and local level. I know in Colorado that is true. My state representative makes herself available via monthly town hall meetings. My partner and I have used that forum to discuss GLBT related issues. I think if we can move our States along, we'll eventually reach critical mass to move the Fed along as well.
"a cool cat"??
I wish (the very cute!) Kerry had asked Obama WHY he makes himself so rare among gay events & gay publications.
Still waiting to hear if he'll march in the Chicago parade...
why is it when
news people are cute, we pay attention.
She actualy did have an answer for that. but I could only fit our conversation into 9 mins of a 45 min conversation.
If there is another chance, which i hope there will be -- we'll continue to get more election analysis.
If you find out if Obama will be marching, let us know.
thanks!
"too cool" for demonstrable gay support
He was in Chicago but didn't bother. See my entry under Gloria's pride blog...
what a cute couple!
what a cute couple!
We never have to wonder about...
Hillary!
(another cutie, btw!)
I think it's human instinct
to pay closer attention when a person is more attractive in general. I watched a documentary about that before. One case study I remember was: They brought in two female school teachers to read to a class of Kindergarten (age four to six children). One woman was very plain, but super nice and even added cute little voices when she was reading the story. The other woman was quite attractive, very stern and she simply read the story without any extra personality. When they asked the children afterwards who they liked better, the majority said the attractive woman. They thought the other one was mean. Heh.

Wow, really? I'd like to
Wow, really? I'd like to see this documentary. I read to children and 4 to 6-year-olds are ususally captivated by big, colorful illustrations and the sound of your voice. They love to get close and lean in and participate. I know an early childhook education expert that absolutely captivates children. They love her. I wouldn't say she's exceptionally attractive, but she has a gift with them. They don't seem to pay attention to her looks at all.
next time i see
a creepy old man (or young man) driving his car around the playground with heaps of colorfully illustrated books and a sound system strapped to his roof - i'm kicking his butt.. and calling 911. call it a pre-emptive strike.
LOL. :)
LOL. :)
LMAO!
You're NOT even going to give him a chance to pull out the candy are you?

nope
he's goin' down!
wait so is the moral of the story
if you are attractive you can do a poor job of delievering the news.
If you are not attractive wear bright colors and hand out candy?
I guess it depends on who
I guess it depends on who you're trying to attract. ;)
One thing is for sure, attractive and nice doesn't cut it in the lesbian community. Apparently it's best to be hot and mean. Women dig that.
mean people suck
hot doesn't hurt, but here's one woman who is tired of mean
Well hello there my good
Well hello there my good friend. :) Nice of you to join us. Yes, mean people DO suck...and so do petty and cliquish people, ick. Lovely picture of Watkins Glen by the way.
joining in
playing hooky from work and can't do the yardwork in the thunderstorm, figured it was time to finally poke around the site. mean & petty suck, watkins glen does not (tho the pictures the fellow took of us kind of do)
bitches rule
nice-ies drool... (god that's cheesy!)
or something like that..
i always noticed the nice people and made friends with them, but i had a hell of a better time with my mean ass girlfriends...
funny thing about the nice ones - they are the ones who'll break your heart deeper and harder.
and that's from experience. ;)
Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhh
Is that based on personal experience???
how sad...
but maybe a reflection of the world at large...
We were quite surprised by that as well!
We thought for certain they would choose the woman with the voices. Getting the less attractive woman to use inflections, etc was part of the 'experiment'. My friend, who was studying Early Childhood Education at the time asked me to watch it with her. I'll get the name of the doc for you from her PC.
I just remembered a couple of other parts of the doc or other docs in the series: a couple of guys - one was short, not bad looking with a great portfolio and he was very smart. The second was tall, not bad looking, didn't have two cents to rub together and was 'dumb as a stick.' The majority of the women were drawn to the tall guy.
The third comparison was done between two women applying for the same position within a firm. The plain woman had more credentials and was better qualified for the position, but they offered it to the hot chick who could probably do the job - nowhere as efficient as the other woman though.
Give me more time and I'll probably remember more... :)

Oh please stop...I'm getting depressed. ;)
Achtung, bitte!
"why is it when news people are cute, we pay attention."
Umm........guess cuz...... I'M ALIVE!!
(ba-boom, ba-boom, ba-boom, ba-boom <----That's my heart!)
(I think in general I pay attention - not only to the cuties, and probably less to the menwim.)
Interesting interview
Hey that was interesting. The info about the GIL Action Fund reminds us that our local and state elections are just as important as the presidential race.
So how were the drinks afterwards?
minn you astute O-charter
i think the point was actually that our local / state elections may even be more important.
Our civil rights trickels from the bottom up!
xo
p.s. you are always up for the drinks!
Good job Grace...
Kudos on getting Kerry Eleveld and for finally copping to where the "Chart Report" gets it's news. I was hoping maybe, Gay News on FSTV had a hand in there also. Andy & Ann would be very proud! I'm just sayin'.....
crabQ
Kelly pulls all our headline gay/news and she actually does gleen it from various sources, I'll tell her to check out FSTV.
Cool beans!
I found the schedule for the weekly show: Gay USA
