Coming to you live from New York City, it’s me! Julia Watson, girl reporter! I have traveled to the Big Red FrOOt to ring in my 31st year on planet Earth, celebrating in style with my one and only. (That means I just turned 30, for the math-challenged like me.) Lo and behold, I was born the day before the anniversary of the Stonewall Riots and thus find myself here during the City’s annual Pride festivities. Herein I will describe my adventures in the city that never sleeps.

First off, what is wrong with you people? In California, we like to sleep. Sleeping is awesome! Maybe if you guys slept more you’d be less grouchy, which brings me to… My very first real, live New York City subway ride! I received this warning from Gurlfren: “Dude!” (Okay, perhaps I am paraphrasing in Californian, because y’all don’t say “dude” in New-Yorkese, but I digress…) “You can’t make eye contact with people and smile at them like that here. They’ll think you’re being aggressive or crazy, or take it as an invitation to hit on you.”
“Oh?” quoth I. “Mayhap that is why people keep staring back at me like I am one of those ‘crazies’ my Nano warned me about when I was small.” Alas, we tried to play Gurlfren’s favorite on-the-way-home-from-work game, “spot the rat,” from the train, but were unsuccessful.
On Saturday, I went to my first Dyke March. Here, Gurlfren and I met up with none other than our Commander in Chief, Moon — also known as the boss of me. Moon searched in vain for us for a while, as text messages flew back and forth. We finally found each other on the steps near the corner of 42nd Street and 6th Avenue, in a sea of lesbians.

Lesbians. EVERYWHERE! The energy of being in a crowd of a couple thousand queer women was sweet exhilaration, even if the poky pace once we actually got moving made it feel more of a Sapphic Stroll than a Dyke March. At any rate, it was just my speed, allowing for much dyke-watching, people-watching-the-dykes-watching and catching of offhand quotes.
Top Three Quotes of the Day, Dyke March NYC, 2008
3. A cop on his walkie: “They’re coming down 5th Avenue. The lesbians are coming!”
2. Hundreds of lesbians chanting, as sheets of rain began pour down, “We like it WET! We like it WET!”
1. Another cop-walkie conversation overheard along the route: “You gotta spread ‘em out.” “What?” “You gotta spread the lesbians.”
Also among the more amusing moments, my favorite t-shirt of the day, worn by a fetching lass who offered this plaintive request:

There were a handful of supportive gay guys out and about, cheering on their lesbian sisters. My favorite stood in his second floor apartment behind a wall of windows, puppeteering his cat to make it wave to the Lesbians on Parade. Oh, pussy. We salute you! (And we did.)

happy birthday Julia
Your right NYC does require some adjustments.I too would look people in the eye, smile and say hello(lol) Couldn't understand why they just ignored me,so after 4 days of not getting it I as told while out with a friend you don't do that in NYC.I laughed and said "is that why everyone looks at their shoes?"She laughed and said yes.
It's hard being that close to people, actually touching on the train, and not say something.Oh and I'm not suppose to talk to the random person just standing there either. That too get's you stared at like your crazy:)

I think it's the forced
I think it's the forced geographic intimacy (especially on places like the train) that make people so distant. It makes sense, but it really is weird!
p.s. I dig your new sig.
See, I would think the
See, I would think the opposite.
There was an old guy on one train that was singing really loud christmas carols lmao.I could see why everyone was silent in that case.

That's my NYC for ya
I'm glad you enjoyed yourself in New York City. The rally and both marches were amazing. Hand in hand our lesbian sisters joined together in pride.
Happy you had a good time on your birthday. Happy Birthday Julia!

J-Dub, sweets!
So glad to have you rovin' and tellin' about it! I love a woman who roves and tells!
Have a great time - give Moon a kiss for me!

Moon
Texy, Moon gesticulates wildly while she's talking, and grins all the while like she knows something naughty. In short, she is good fun.
Gesticulates!
That's funny - watch out for the flying digits..... and she probably does know a thing or two naughty!

was anyone around
Hey, was anyone else in the area when the black car reved the engine and skidded toward the march marshals, and the cops came over and was pulling the dude out of the car?!
I am proud of the marshals who didn't even move, and went off on the guy. I'm extra proud of the nycpd who came right over and didn't hesitate in giving the guy hell! :oD
It was my first march, and that is def. going to stay high in my nyc pride/dyke march memory banks!
lol pride march the next day
ha ha, looks like fun, I missed the Dyke March... but I made it to the Pride Parade on Sunday, which was insanely crowded, especially if you met up with it to witness the arrival in the west village (as I did)... the piers were impossible, talk about sardines, the masses were out, and most of the people I know didn't even attend... I haven't even been in years. New York must be a quarter queer! In Manhattan it felt like the old Ellen show where everyone in the world was gay and to be straight was weird and obscene.
Happy Happy Birfday!
Happy b-day Julia!
Looks like quite a NYC adventure!
hahaa!
that was hilarious! i love the top 3 quotes... ;)
Funny commentary
Oh, my Bob. We were ROFLMAO. Then on the way to Pridefest yesterday we came across another merry band of NYPD officers on the train (a train overflowing with the gays, mind you). The two guy cops were arguing over whether or not one of them was a metrosexual. (The other one insisted he himself was but was pooh-poohing his partner.)
And can I just say... NYPD is sporting some seriously HOT WOMEN on the force. I think I earned a dirty look from my woman at one point for ogling a little. *does slinky walk of shame out of blog*
Happy birthday to you!
That's how I want to spend my birthday. Yep, exactly one month from today I'd love to be strolling down the street in a sea of lesbians. Everyone could pitch in and make it happen.
I love the "three fingers please" tank top. I don't know which to look at more: the shirt or that girl's arms. Oh my...
I'm always thrilled
to return to my well-rested, West Coast comfort after a trip to the East Coast! It never ceases to feel like a journey to a foreign country. I can totally see where you are coming from (it's probably a similar feeling for bi-coastal travels in the other direction as well).
Love the shirt btw! LOL
Happy Birthday you, Cancerian you! :)

So close...and yet I had to work - but I do get tomorrow off, for my son's B-day...
I was thinking last night...and it occurred to me that there are a few other OurChart B-days around here soon. Mama Ilene...and then Alex is on the 10th and then Leish's is on the 11th.
A co-worker of mine went to NYC yesterday, for the festivities...and she's straight...Some day I might go to NYC pride. Someday.
I hope you're having fun :)

Howdy Tex. :) Happy Birthday Julia!
I've been told it's bad luck to wish someone a happy birthday before it arrives so yours will come later, Tex.
Hi, PK!
Thanks in advance for the happy birthday - I love how you got it in there now and still kept me out of the bad luck realm!
