Changing the Center

Obama’s perceived move toward the center and his statements about continuing and perhaps expanding Bush’s faith-based social service programs have been all the news this week.

I talked with my longtime ex Ian about it today. He’s my go-to for all discussions about politics. We’ve been self-righteously contentious since the democratic primaries the first time we’ve actually fought in 20 years.

He’s been a fervent Obama supporter since the beginning and was smug when Obama took the candidacy; so I’m still enjoying antagonizing him every time we talk about the election. I called him today and said, “Your boyfriend Obama sure does like God a lot.” Ian dismissed me by saying, “Oh that’s just a political move. He needs to prove to the crazy rednecks that he’s not a Muslim.”

It’s true that most analysts are saying the same thing, that this election will be won by the candidate who can attract the swing voters. Perhaps, but I sure as hell am not excited about voting for a Democratic candidate who says things like “While I could sit in church and pray all I want, I wouldn't be fulfilling God's will unless I went out and did the Lord's work."

In 2000, McCain quite famously referred to Jerry Falwell and Pat Robertson as “agents of intolerance.” His lack of enthusiasm for the Christian right has alienated him from some of the extreme right wing in this campaign, as well. He’s recently started pandering to them, probably in a panic about his party’s ambivalence toward him. But, and I can’t believe I’m about to say this, McCain’s dismissal of the right and subsequent pandering seems more harmless. He knows his party wants him to do that. But Obama is the Democratic nominee. He’s the nominee of my party. And his utter disregard for the accepted tenet of secularism in the Democratic party is unsettling.

Obama is trying to woo those miffed Christians over to his side. It’s a bad move. Pander to them for votes and you’re indebted to them in office. I don’t care if it is merely a political move. I don’t want a Commander in Chief who’d stoop to that level. Why won’t someone pander to me for a change? I believe my voting bloc is much larger than anyone realizes and he is risking alienating me and my entire world.

We put it in the chart report.

Kelly is our resident news person so she normally gets to all the main news on Friday though we did cite the Headline on Monday!

C'mon now quit with that conspiracy theorizing! I admitted to turning the Obama corner last week in someone's post.

My Bad

Hi Grace,

Hey, it's no fun to be a liberal if you can't engage in a little conspiracy theorizing!

Thanks for putting the news that Obama came out against the California initiative to DENY same sex marriage in California in the Chart Report. I have been out fighting the good fight and haven't been keeping up on OurChart as well as I might.

Kelly does a fabulous job with her Friday news round up and I'm going to try to make that my OurChart home base as we hurtle toward the General Election.

Here's an olive branch for my Clinton-supporting sisters by way of Mr. Motaterz ...

Hooray for me!

Oh, wait. Yeah, I'm on the news beat these days, among other beats. The Obama rejection of the ban is big. BIG, I tell ya. He had previously said he supported the man-woman scenario.

And, I agree on the fact that he's playing politics to win this thing. He's savvy, but he also isn't the MOST liberal of Dems. (I'm guessing that would go to Feingold or Kucinich.) He says he's staying true to his positions, and it's just that it's more way spotlighted now.

I don't mind a little shape-shifting to get him in the door. My concern is somewhat similar to Cage's in that he may alienate all the young, new voters that came out in droves and got him this far, and they, I believe, out-number  the Brooklyn, high-femme voter bloc.

HRC Debate

Early in the nomination process, when there was still a pretty wide field of candidates, HRC invited the potential nominees to a forum that was televised on Logo (and probably on-line as well). Obama made the same statement about same sex marriage at that time. NONE of the candidates spoke out in favor of it, including Hillary. She made statements about how far we've come and that we need full, equal rights which I believe is Obama's position as well. As I recall, he stepped right out and said he thought marriage was a religious institution and that he supported civil unions granting the same legal rights as marriage.

Obama came out in FAVOR of gay marriage

Hi again LezBeth,

Obama came out this week against the California amendment that would overturn the recent CA Supreme Court ruling allowing same sex marriage. I know that's a confusing double negative, but Obama came out FOR same sex marriage this week.

Love and Light,
Melanie

Hmmm.

I must have missed the in favor of gay marriage thing. I know he opposed the constitutional amendment banning gay marriage, but is that the same as supporting it? Arnold Sw. also opposes the constitutional amendment, but I don't think any one would say he's in favor of same sex marriage. You have such great web resources. Do you have a link showing obama or quoting him as saying he's in favor of gay marriage?
