One of the most important stories to the LGBT community this week was
Senator Barack Obama officially coming out against the California ballot initiative seeking to define marriage as solely between a man and a woman.
Obama had previously stated his opinion as supporting civil unions but believing marriage should be limited to heterosexuals.
Senator John McCain, on the other hand, supports the amendment.
Digging through their positions and how they court our constituency is always great fodder. One thing is certain, the issue is a galvanizing one that is bringing in
loads of cash on both sides.
In trans news this week, Congress held it's
first-ever hearing on transgender matters and probably got a lot more than it bargained for – humanity – by listening to stories of discrimination and humiliation from members of the trans community. Thomas Beatie, a trans man who knows those issues first hand,
gave birth to a baby girl on Thursday. As for the case of Rodney Whitaker, the trans woman who was killed in a Memphis jail,
police are still investigating.
Wildfires continue to burn out of control in northern California. As of Friday afternoon, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger had ordered 200 more National Guard troops to assist. On Thursday, some 1,800 fires were burning up over 600,000 acres and the entire town of
Big Sur had to be evacuated due to out of control blazes. Flames were even beginning to make their way down into
Santa Barbara County on Friday.
Hostage Ingrid Betancourt upon rescue in Colombia.
In Colombia this week, a
daring and flawless rescue effort managed to free 15 hostages including politician Ingrid Betancourt held for six years by the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia (FARC). The Columbian government went so far as to release
video footage of the mission. Harrowing details of the
hostages' captivity began emerging including executions and sadism. According to the Guardian, “Betancourt said she was often chained to a tree and haunted by thoughts of killing herself during her six-year ordeal. 'Death is a hostage's most faithful companion. We lived with death ... and the seduction of suicide was always with us.'”
In a ruling on a $1 billion copyright case of Viacom against Google, YouTube.com was
ordered to release user data, including viewing habits, in order to prove that pirated material is more popular than viewer-created content.

Obama supports Bette and Tina's Season 6 marriage
Good morning, DeeDee,
I posted higher up in this thread Obama's full statement on the California Supreme Court decision to allow LGBT marriages. It's worth a read as it's powerful, groundbreaking stuff.
In a nutshell, Obama came out in FAVOR of the California Supreme Court decision; McCain came out AGAINST it.
Love and Light,
Melanie, diehard TiBetter
I wasn't going to engage on this, but...
There are some HUGE issues coming down the pike over the next four years. One of the biggest is the Supreme Court. If McCain is elected, the Supreme Court will get two or three new conservative justices and Roe v. Wade will be overturned, among many other life-changing, life-long issues that we currently take for granted.
Also, I feel that if someone doesn't participate by voting, then they give up their right to complain.
And Obama DOES support gay marriage... see my reply above.
i'm with you on 2 points
1) the court is too important to gamble with and 2) at this point it is best not to engage. there is no need to justify our position and no convincing the Hillary die-hards. They are committed to their position as is their right. Our resources may better be used talking with people who are open to being persuaded.
It has been said that "the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result". Stay sane, my friend.

With you all the way, Deedee!

Umm ... Truth in Advertising?
Good morning, Minnie Z
Yes, there are some Democrats who will not support Obama. But the woman in red you pictured here is not one of them.
Love and Light,
Melanie
REALLY??????????????????????????????????????????????????????????
Luckily she'll have her privacy in the voting booth...
Do you believe Hillary or don't you?
Hi Minnie Z
Are you suggesting that Hillary is just words, words, words ... that she doesn't say what she means, that she is a dissembler, that she is just a typical politician who will say anything as the weather dictates, that she's a flippity flopper?
If not, then I think you're going to have to take her at her word that she supports Obama and that she doesn't want any one not voting for Obama or voting for McCain in her name.
You either believe her or you don't. You can't have it both ways ... or can you?
Love and Light,
Melanie
"help me........I'm MELTING!!!!...
I'm suggesting that you can't read her mind, crystal ball or not!
Are you a good witch or a bad witch?
That's the big question, eh?
I'm not suggesting that I can read her mind. But I can read her words which I'll put at the top of this blog so they don't get lost.
Love and Light,
Melanie
