Hey Everyone!
In this week's episode of Body Work, Joulene and I charge up our workout with a Capoeira class. Capoeira is a Brazilian art form which combines dance, music, acrobatics and martial arts. Originating in Brazil about 400 years ago by slaves from the African continent, Capoeira once had to be practiced in secrecy after its lethal potentials were discovered by the slave masters.
Special thanks to
Capoeira Ache Brasil Academy and Mestre Eclilson de Jesus for welcoming us into the studio.

Capoeira
It's been 3-4 years since I had to stop training this art,But my main annoyance is how people pronounce Capoeira Like Leah here at the beginning of the video...I hear people all over saying the same pronounciation over and over,Listen carefully and learn to say it jeez(ok its a difficult word to pronounce so I'll cut her some slack atleast)...Pickiness and bitchyness aside(No offense but it just seriously gripes at me) I really miss this art and wish I could return to it. I was gonna dedicate my life to this...
Nice ginga Leah! :o)
Capoeira is truly a unique and amazing art form (not to mention a kick-ass work-out!). I love that it encompasses so many different elements - dance, fight, play, music, history, singing...so you're constantly learning something new.
And the roda is such a magical experience. I fell in love with capoeira the first time I tried it. Thanks for doing a feature on it!
I LOVE BRAZIL.

Nice, girl :)!
Finally got around to taking Capoiera classes this past year. Gotta love, love, love the Capoiera.
Especially loved playing the instruments at the "Roda" -- the drumming was originally used to call ancestral spirits to join in the circle. I think, pending the participants - some of these spirits definitely still "pop in." The whole experience is exhilarating; the movement, combined with the singing/chanting/music creates such a beautiful, mystical art form. Part of the magic is it contains the opposites in motion: fighting and playing. And two really smart, advanced players are fascinating to watch because it's so psychological--it's like a chess match. They'll just circle each other, like dangerous predators, ready to unexpectedly pounce. But they still keep it friendly, in the end. It's a game--that's what's fun about it.
The current goal is to study it in Brazil, planning to travel down there by land (mostly) next year.
