Music Reviews: Wild Boys Never Lose It

I got sidetracked on other topics for a couple of weeks and haven't done any reviews, missing a few big releases in the process. Maybe the new Coldplay just put me over the edge, and I needed a break. Hard to say, really. But here we are, together again, looking at what's recently joined the ranks of musical history. I'll warn you right now, it's a boys' club this week for some reason. Sorry. I looked and looked.

Beck's Modern Guilt isn't blowing my mind like Beck sometimes does. There are some good songs in there and some nifty production sleights of hand courtesy of Danger Mouse, but it's a little boring in the overall scheme of things and what Beck is capable of. That's the problem with lifting your own bar so high – sometimes you can't clear it.

John Mayer has a new live set out called Where the Light Is. I hate live recordings, even from someone who's dating Jennifer Aniston; so I'm not even going to listen to it.

This guy Nels Andrews is a raconteur-style songsmith following in the footsteps of legends like John Prine and Kris Kristofferson, except that Nels is actually quite pleasant to listen to, and I don't find that to be true of those others. On Off Track Betting, he writes of his Americana-inspired experiences garnered whilst traveling across the land. You can totally see him hopping into the back of a pick-up truck with his guitar and backpack, setting off down the dusty road to wherever the driver happens to take him... and then writing a song about it.

Listen to Nels Andrews' "Lady of the Silver Spoon" here:

On the subject of heartland songwriters, this may seem crazy and surprising, but John Mellencamp's Life, Death, Love and Freedom has some pretty good tracks on it. I'm not a big fan of the blues, so I could live without the tunes steeped in that tradition. But when he strips it all down and just does his thing as an acoustic-based songwriter exploring the weighty topics that the title suggests, it's quite enjoyable for a guy making his 22nd record. He was even gutsy enough to write a song about and called “Jena,” the small town in Louisiana that struggled through a massive racial uproar a couple of years ago. (I happened to have spent my early childhood in that town, so...)

It seems Louisiana is all the rage on recent releases. The Alternate Routes include an homage on their Watershed EP. These guys are from Connecticut, but they don't really sound like it. I'd have put them in maybe North Carolina to explain the combination of hip and rootsy. It's a decent little five-song collection they've got there.

Another soulful offering comes from Ernie Halter and Starting Over. Does blue-eyed soul apply to boys with brown eyes? (I've only heard it for gals like Dusty Springfield.) Well, that's kind of what you have here, along with some other things. You can't really put a comprehensive tag on him. One song recalls Jason Mraz and another Tony Rich, while still a third is more reminiscent of a jam band that I can't actually name because I don't like jam bands. I wouldn't buy the whole disc, but there are some good tunes on there.

John Mayer.......

You've got to listen to it - you're going to be surprised!!!! My son actually went to this concert - called me during it - was the most remarkable concert he's ever attended. After the initial set was completed, John came back out and played more and more and more - he was feeling it and shared!

Glad to have you back on the music scene - it's also good to be back with it...... thanks

I'm still passing.

I LOVE seeing live music. I just hate hearing it on CD. It doesn't translate. However, I do need to listen to more Mayer, in general. For some reason, I wrote him off a while back. (I actually know the reason and it has to do with him as a person.)

Understand!!!!!

Lot more music out there for ya that brings smiles!

Mayer

Kelly, I had no idea who John Mayer was. Then I came across his Continuum album, which I really liked, especially the song, Slow Dancing in a Burning Room. Then someone told me who he has dated. I replied, "Lalalalala. I'm not paying attention to that. I just want to listen to that song." Sometimes, I just don't want to know about their personal lives, hah. :-)

I COMPLETELY

understand where you are coming from Minnie!

I used to LOVE Lenny Kravitz's MUSIC UNTIL I became inundated with his personal information(from the TV or radio). To this day I can't/won't/don't willingly listen to him any more - no matter how talented he is...

The only thing I want to know about John Meyer is that he is contemplating the current social & political climate through his music. Everything else is "lalala" for me too! :)

Much love to Dusty Springfield - one of the pioneers of the 'blue-eyed soul sound!'I think we can safely refer to Ernie Halter as an R&B/Soul artist now...it's OK...;)

Nothing against male singers - they just need to have a unique & interesting sound in order to spark my interest. Otherwise, I'm mostly drawn to female artists...

kinda relate for different reasons

I almost tune out when I hear its a male singer.
I accidently landed on a concert honoring the who on vh1 last night.

every single one of the commorative bands were dudes. I really couldn't get beyond how "my genereation" after 40 yrs, was still being sung by all white guys. I grew up loving the who--that killed it.

author

a couple of sexists, huh?

I'll admit that I generally prefer female singers, too, but if you write off/tune out the guys, you really are missing some great stuff.

Guy's music

Ladies, I had to make a concerted effort to make a guys' playlist...and then when I was making it I really wasn't wanting to. I was telling myself to not be a guy music snob - broaden my musical horizon! Now that I have my guys' playlist I don't ever listen to it. What exactly do you think this means? I listen to the lyrics - I would never add a tune that was femaleophobic and there are great tunes to add BUT, I'm just not into 'em. Oh heck, that's it - answered my own question - I'm not into 'em. Whew - glad that's defined - on with the women!!!!! Thanks for the counseling session - check's in the mail!

Whatever!

It's your losses!

And it's duly noted that you quote John Lennon, who happened to be a male singer, in your signature. You sexist hypocrit you! And weren't you a cheater a couple of weeks ago??? What am I to do?!

More spankings??????

Not seeing my forest for the trees....O' Musically Green One!!!! I've got the guy playlist - that's the most important thing - I'm just not into 'em! I LIKE WOMEN - EVEN THEIR MUSIC!!!

I've been in trouble with you for weeks - still at the back of the room - I don't think I'm ever movin' up!!

Nothing but love

Tex

LOL!

I'm here to keep you on your toes!! ~_^

Now, I wouldn't say I was a sexist/female chauvinist, or man-hating hypocrite (I kept my signature to prove it), but I am certainly a feminist. I simply mentioned that I prefer women singers and believe male singers need to have a "unique and interesting sound" otherwise I'm just "not that into them"... I remember I had a couple of engaging males on my play-list - Marley and Sting...right?
