Fashion: 11211, Williamsburg

There are more artists per capita within the neighborhood of Williamsburg, Brooklyn than any other city in the world. Old-time New York bohemians lament the days of the East Village Scene where urban hipsters made music, art and madness. What used to be the “downtown” scene has moved across the river to Billyburg and the pioneering artist ghettos marked by stops along the L Train.

OurChart presents Leslie Van Stelten’s digital venture into Trendster district, zip code 11211. —GM

Leslie Van Stelten fucking

Leslie Van Stelten fucking rocks. I remember that day well... hung over, heavy hearted, with a sore throat and pbr in hand before 1pm and i hadn't showered [recently] so i wiped my pits with my shirt, tossed on the clothes Leslie handed me and added some wax to my hawk and ran my hand through it. all set and ready to go! i leaned against a dirty vacant store front while Leslie did all the work. Haha i puked not far from there at a party a couple years ago. Leslie will never let me live that down... If anyone knows what's real and what's raw it's Leslie Van Stelton.

p.s. if ya still got skin then you can still get inked. im headed to east side ink in just an hour or so here...

Hhhhhhhotness. It burns me.

Tired and typical. The real

Tired and typical. The real bohemia has long left New York, and from the looks of these poseurs it's not coming back. Can you say Hot Topic?

HOT TOPIC RULES....I love shopping there...ha!

But seriously, I strongly feel that the fashion designers who graciously donated their one-of-a kind street clothing and everyone who put their time and energy into this shoot are amazing innovative artists. I hand selected them because of the impact they have on keeping the queer artistic community alive in Brooklyn. New York City is always reinventing itself and maybe your definition of Bohemia is reminiscent of that from another period in history, like the 70's. Well the 70's are long gone and in this new millennium, it's all about BROOKLYN BABY!!!

negativity...So last thursday.

Dearest commentator,

I know most of the people who were involved with this shoot, both personally as well as professionally. My song was used as the soundtrack, I am in it as well.

I can only speak for myself, however i can pretty much safely assume due to the fact that we are a network of (wo/men, bois, fags) and we all keep each other in the know with what we're up to that most of us if not all of us barely get any sleep ..EVER!

That being said, i also know for a fact that we are spending our time working hard, playing hard and uplifting one another to make the best art we possibly can.

So instead of being a "ripely old character" about it why cant we just create and maintain a space where we can appreciate everyone for who and what they are, what we do and how we are becoming and how we choose to show up in the world?!?!

I do realize you have the right to "mix it up" and i respect and acknowledge the route it seems you're choosing to take with all this, but honestly... havent you had enough? the only way to get over the patriarchy mentality is if we untie, unite and rise up.. all of us... yup, every single one!

but hey if you wanna brawl, i can put up my dukes too! I am the ghetto, a queer/trans gutter brown grrl that never belonged or fit in anywhere.. still dont!

i get my clothes from the street, i make art with materials i find from the garbage... i go days without showering, wear the same clothes until they fall off me and if you do something i dont like, and i have a bit a liquor in me, i just might shove ya, hit ya.. or worse!!!

so dont get it twisted.. you want to see how much of a big black 6ft tall queer dyke fag poseur i can be?!?! go to any dive bar and you'll probably find me in the corner and then if you want we could take it outside.... homie!

word!

I have fairly recent ink because I had my first tattoo done in January 2007 and my latest in June 2008. It took me 25 years to finally decide to get one.
