This is a topic I get a lot of questions about. Should I eat before working out? What should I eat before a workout? How long should I wait after eating to exercise?
This is a really important part in getting the results you want. If you aren’t properly fueling your body, you won’t have the energy to burn it off.
A common misconception is that, if you workout before you eat (i.e. first thing in the morning), you will burn more fat and lose more weight. You may be burning some fat, however, you are also going to drain your blood sugar levels, which can take up to 48 hours to rebalance, leaving you feeling weaker and more irritable than you should. This can also off-set the rest of your workouts and work against you overall. Instead, have a small meal an hour to an hour and a half before so that you are already jump starting your metabolism and giving yourself energy for your workout.
Think of it this way: by eating an extra 100 calories, you could have energy to burn 300 more than you would if you didn’t!
So, the next question is what to eat. When looking at a good pre-workout snack or meal, you want to make sure you are getting some complex carbohydrates (whole grains, brown rice, oatmeal, muesli) with a small amount of protein. The carbs will give you energy, and the protein will help stabilize your blood sugar. Eating too much protein before a workout will take your body a longer time to process, so have just enough to give you that satisfied feeling.
Some good suggestions are:
- a piece of whole grain toast with a tablespoon of peanut butter
- ¾ cup of oatmeal with a small glass of almond milk
- a smoothie with a scoop of protein powder
- one egg scrambled with a piece of toast
- an apple, a slice of turkey and a couple of almonds
- tuna (mixed with salsa) on a rice cracker
The best way to keep your metabolism high and keep your body energized all day is to eat 5-6 small meals and snacks through your day. So, keep on fueling; and you’ll keep on burning!

whoa
This blog is extremely useful! thank you Leah for helping me improve my workout regime.
Took me a while
to figure out what worked but I find the first 2 items on your list to be my staple per workout meals. I love peanut butter! Now that my runs are getting longer I am working on hydration, especially because it's hot and humid in NY right now. Leah, what are your thoughts on staying hydrated? I bought a water belt and ditched it after my first run with it. Too cumbersome for me so I played a game with my 4 year old. We drove my 10 mile route and planted water bottles along the route. She had so much fun but if I could only remember where she hid them all :) We'll see tomorrow when I head out for my run. BTW, last week my hero of the week was the 92 year old that ran a 5K in 45 minutes. This week it's Dara Torres, 41 US Olympic swimmer and mother. Go Dara!
thanks
i was always wondering when it was good to eat before a workout
I eat 4-5 small meals daily.
I eat 4-5 small meals daily. Working out on an empty stomach isn't a good feeling at all, one time I completely skipped breakfast and didn't know if I had the energy for the gym. Thankfully I had a bit of chocolate with me. But normally I grab an apple and a small bag of nuts because I'm always in a rush.
Protein shake between b-fast & lunch
Makes it easier to get in 5-6 "meals." Having mine right now, cheers! Jodie
P.S. Hi Lisa. :)
good point
i love my mid-morning or mid-afternoon protein shake...they are so easy-i carry the powder around in a ziplock!
Fuel vs ballast
I used to do a small bowl of oatmeal about an hour or less before morning weights, which included only a light run. Races and all other training runs required a meal no closer than 3 hours prior to workout, so as to avoid the lead-in-tummy feeling that can really detract from those intervals/long run.
Even now, I don't think twice about my bowl of cereal right before I hop on my bike to get to work, but I'll have nothing or a small piece of fruit, handful of granola, something like that if I'm going to run. It's all that bouncing...
