Lift Your Shirt

Function vs. Fashion. This was a war I had with my dad at a very young age as I left for school with bleeding heels (caused by my new sandals). He stated that clearly function always took priority, while I debated that fashion would win out ever time. Never mind if I was cold or itchy or squeezed into small shoes or jeans – I wanted to look cute above all.

While I’ve probably moved ever so slightly toward function in recent years, I’ll still choose the item that looks the best over what feels the best. Perhaps a topic for therapy?

Bras are one of the necessary evils. Most of the time they are only seen by the person wearing them. However, I still find that pressure to look cute carries over for me. I know that when I have great lingerie on, I feel more attractive. That said, I also know an ill-fitting bra can make me a cranky girl.

The corset became popular in the 1500s, missioned to lift and shape breasts upward. The modern bra, with its two separate cups, was gradually developed from the corset in the early 20th century as an attempt to manufacture a more comfortable underwear piece.

In researching bras, I actually found a slew of commentary about the history and controversy surrounding them. Bras serve a range of purposes for women, including support, modesty and sexuality accessory. Feminists in the 1960s symbolically threw their bras into the trash to contest the literal “restraint” of women, however, many women today choose to wear bras to emphasize and/or enhance their breasts. I’ve tried to include something for everyone below…

Calvin Klein always has a nice range of bras that are pretty, fairly comfortable and reasonably priced ($38). I like the seamless, smooth front that works well with it’s namesake: t-shirts.

Summertime is great for wearing tanks and skimpier tops, however, they often don’t have built-in support. Enter the Victoria Secret IPEX® strapless convertible bra, which brags that you can wear it five ways: halter, racerback, strapless, cross-back or two-strap. The $45 price tag does not include Gisele, however.

I consistently wear shoulder-baring, t-back tanks all summer long. Since I’m not the biggest fan of the bra strap look, I opt for these American Apparel cross-back bras. Incredibly comfortable, they work great for the less-endowed contingency. Offered in a range of colors, they price out at $14.

Tisha (above) is the much-touted bra from Le Mystere. Oprah swears by it. "You look in the mirror, and you notice your breasts have suddenly started heading south. You didn't know you were going to Mississippi, but they're already in Kentucky", Oprah says wistfully of her unpredictable bosoms. The Tisha bra's molded cups hoist up your breasts and give them a smooth line, while the thick straps are comfortable on the shoulders. This bra comes is sizes A-G, which makes it a great option for the well-endowed. $62

Also by Victoria’s Secret, this padded, underwire style brags about preventing “bra-peek”. I love the terms companies come up with. Translation: when worn with a plunging neckline, you won’t see any of the material sticking out because it’s barely going to clear your areola. As a fan of the halter and spaghetti strap genre, I can attest to the value of such a design. Many other pretty bras tend to have too much material, so this one is a find at $48.

Additionally, this bra is a hot choice for those times when you’re not the only one seeing what’s on under your clothes. Who knows? Maybe the anticipation of show and tell will mute the nagging pain of the underwire.

Strapless!?

I am a 36DD and I want to be able to wear a strapless bra, I still haven't found one for the well-endowed. Any suggestions?

No Victoria for me

I've never had a cute/sexy bra from there...apparently the secret is that they don't carry DDD. I usually buy the standard thick, wide, frumpy bras that you find at all the plus-size stores...I know they try (not too hard, though)but their version of "sexy" still makes me feel like a senior citizen. :c(

36 D lol

I love the victoria secrets near me, i am a regular shopper, the clothes the assesories make me feel sexy. It's true the models don't always reflect all of us women in our many forms and sizes, but they do appeal to our desire to look like sex in motion. They have herd us in alot of ways and you have to admit the bras and panties and such have become a tad more comfortable or user friendly then the instruments of torture they first came out with. I do also shop around lol I love to shop, to compare, to get a bargain, who doesn't. Lane Bryant is a good store and their stuff does fit better on my 36 D's, and maybe it is all in my head, but it just doesn't make me tingle as I do just knowing i'm wearing my victoria secrets under my work suit, or that "she's" wearing victoria under her's. In the end all we're really buying is the sex appeal and blantant naughtiness of wearing something we wouldn't be caught dead in infront of our parents or at church.

The only issue I have with

The only issue I have with Victoria's Secret is that they are limited in their the variety of styles that come in a A cup and then the ones that do don't all come in 36A, I'm doubly screwed... Most companies don't make it for some asinine reason.
I usually shop GAP body, because they have my size, they make pretty and comfy bras.. and they have sales. Though, I found a great t-back bra (that fit!) at of all places Target. It was their Xhiliration brand, it was on sale for $4!!!

Victoria's Secret !!

Without a doubt....Victoria's Secret. A true femme's delight. I love the smell, the textures, the abundance of sensuality that it represents. I can spend hours at V/S Fashion Island in Newport Beach,CA buying the most beautiful lingerie imaginable , and that just never seems to be long enough. I feel so good, in silk and lace.

*umm...softness*

right on

OMG I know just how you feel, I spent what i thought was an hour going through the victoria secrets in manhatten and it had actually been 3 hours, not just the bras and panties (which I love) but the lotions and purfumes as well. I love them so, they ooze sensual sexualality and make me feel red hot when i wear their stuff.

More important than brand names

Getting a good fitting. I'm tellin' ya. Especially women like me with big bazooms and all of us as we age. That dumpy little lady with the half-glasses and a tape measure around her neck can work wonders. She's at the better department stores everywhere--Nordstroms, Macy's, etc. Most women have never been fitted for a bra and have no idea how they should fit or what size is best. It's amazing what a difference getting a good fitting can do...I don't think you have to sacrifice function for fashion, actually, something sexy looks better when it fits.

Wacoal

One brand I think should be added is Wacoal. Their bras are comfortable from the minute you put them on!

soooo agreed

Wacoal rules!

Yup

Victoria's Secret rocks hard. I always go during the semi-annual sale and stock up. They're very comfortable, pretty, and they get the job done lol.

lol

at walmart the other day i saw a bra that said " no back fat".

that is hilarious. But back

that is hilarious. But back fat can become a serious problem! lol

I agree...

Lane Bryant does have bras that are nice and are more geared for BBG's(Big Breasted Girls) like myself. I recently went on the hunt for a good support bra at LB and unfortunately they were outta my size but a good Playtex Cross Your Heart is always a nice back up.

one more

FYI:
One more that I think should have made that list...
Lane Bryant which carries many sizes and styles in bras for those of us larger than a 36C
