L.A. Rocks and Rolls with 5.4 Quake

Around 11:42 a.m. PDT today, an estimated 5.4 magnitude earthquake shook Southern California from an epicenter about two miles southwest of Chino Hills and about five miles southeast of Diamond Bar, the U.S. Geological Survey said. The quake lasted from 15 to 20 seconds, and its depth was approximately 7.6 miles under the surface. Aftershocks are expected to continue, with 27 having already struck, the highest with a 3.6 magnitude.

Dr. Kate Hutton of CalTech said residents should look at this mild-to-moderate quake as a drill for the big one that will come someday. Reverberations were felt as far east as Las Vegas, south to San Diego and north to Santa Barbara. So far minimal damage and no injuries have been reported.

Seeing as we have a lot of readers in potential earthquake zones, Grace Moon thought we should share some preparedness tips. From the USGS website:

Q: What should I do during an EQ?
A: 1. If you are INDOORS — STAY THERE! (Get under a desk or table and hang on to it, or move into a hallway or get against an inside wall. STAY CLEAR of windows, fireplaces and heavy furniture or appliances. GET OUT of the kitchen, which is a dangerous place (things can fall on you). DON'T run downstairs or rush outside while the building is shaking or while there is danger of falling and hurting yourself or being hit by falling glass or debris.

2. If you are OUTSIDE — get into the OPEN, away from buildings, power lines, chimneys and anything else that might fall on you.

3. If you are DRIVING — stop, but carefully. Move your car as far out of traffic as possible. DO NOT stop on or under a bridge or overpass or under trees, light posts, power lines or signs. STAY INSIDE your car until the shaking stops. When you RESUME driving, watch for breaks in the pavement, fallen rocks and bumps in the road at bridge approaches.

4. If you are in a MOUNTAINOUS AREA — watch out for falling rock, landslides, trees and other debris that could be loosened by quakes.

Q: During an EQ should you head for the doorway?
A:
Only if you live in an old, unreinforced adobe house. In modern homes, doorways are no stronger than any other parts of the house and usually have doors that will swing and can injure you. YOU ARE SAFER PRACTICING THE DUCK, COVER AND HOLD under a sturdy piece of furniture.

Q: Things NOT to do during an EQ?
A:
1. DO NOT turn on the gas again if you turned it off; let the gas company do it.

2. DO NOT use matches, lighters, camp stoves or barbecues, electrical equipment, appliances UNTIL you are sure there are no gas leaks. They may create a spark that could ignite leaking gas and cause an explosion and fire.

3. DO NOT use your telephone, EXCEPT for a medical or fire emergency. You could tie up the lines needed for emergency response. If the phone doesn't work, send someone for help.

4. DO NOT expect firefighters, police or paramedics to help you. They may not be available.

THAT SHIT WAS SCARY. I WAS IN CHINO AT WORK DOIN SECURITY AT A SCHOOL,AND ALL OF A SUDDEN BOOKS WERE FLYING OFF THE SHELVES AND SHIT .WHEN IT WAS ALL OVER I HAD TO BE THE ONE WHO WENT BACC INTO THE BUILDING TO MAKE SURE THERE WAS NO STRUCTURE DAMAGE,GAS LEAKS,ELECTRICAL FIRES THINGS LIKE THAT. IT OCCURED TO ME THAT I THINK I NEED A NEW JOB,THEY NOT GOIN TO BE JUST SENDING ME INTO BUILDINGS ALL WILLY-NILLY LIKE THAT,SHIT A BITCH GET SCARED TOO!!!(LMFAO)

i was really worried....

i was having an overseas talk with my gf when earquake took place... she was right at the epicenter [barstow]...
it wasn't as strong as what we had 10 years ago (7.5 in rs) but i got worried... i was ten thousand miles away from her... i felt useless as i listen to her feakout on the other line... tsk!...

I was in Palm springs and me being a deep sleeper I slept through it as I did the other time except my mom woke me up the other time hahaha if she didn't do that I probably would've still been sleeping -it must be the shrooms lol but I'm serious I slept through it and after it was over my friend Jonny was like wtf your sleeping and I was like what up? What happened? And he's like dude you didn't feel that? lol And I said you know what dude I'm going back to bed hahaha

Hello there.....Glad you're

Hello there.....Glad you're all ok. No need to freak out people, most of the time an earthquake is *just* an earthquake (no buildings collapsing, no serious injuries ect).... And in time, you just get used to it. In the city where I live in Greece, in the last six months alone we have experienced about five big (5.7 to 7.5) earthquakes, so by now I kind of feel like a veteran :)

So I'm born and raised a

So I'm born and raised a Cali girl and have been through lots of EQ's...am I the only one that thought this wasn't that bad?? Don't get me wrong, I can see a first timmer being totally freaked out about it because it was kinda big, but IDK it didn't seem that bad. Didn't last too long either.

Just a thought

"So much betta, I'm for you"

I'm a transplant

But then again, I've been in Southern California for about 21 years (if you count the military time). I've gotten to where I won't even wake up unless it's at least a 5.0 or greater, lol. Unless it's at least a 6.0 or the phone rings right after, I don't even worry about it that much.

Problem is, in So. Cali., most have lived here less than 3 years, so any earthquake, especially after all the Hollyweird movies, is gunna spook the recent arrivals.

the perils of sleeping naked...

i had just turned in a few hours before the quake, and was in deep REM--and low & behold, though i'm in santa monica & they say the beach areas never shake much--i totally panicked, as this was my first quake.

half asleep, wild-eyed, stumbling around, looking for clothing--brain frozen completely solid. the immediate instinct was just to get the heck out of the house as fast as possible, in case the roof fell in.

luckily the shaking stopped before i could reach the front door, and i was paced at a dead run.

from now on - will be sleeping fully clothed - to say the least!

The first one is always frightening

Hey HP, ever since the Northridge quake, I also decided that some kind of clothing is important. I also keep shoes right next to the bed (walking on glass can be dangerous to you well being) and also a tool (no, not that kind!) for prying open doors if necessary to escape. Hope you were able to get back to REMing so that you continue to recharge those wonderful brain cells of yours. Miss ya, ATK

Thanks for the tips, ATK :)!

Yes, it's something I never even considered--so had to do a little planning. I will follow your advice. Glad you're ok.

I was surprised by how thrown off I was by a bit of shaking. I'm usually pretty fearless. But I guess to face an unknown situation, i.e. earth in motion, when it's been motionless throughout my entire lifetime, left me with no precedent about how to react.

I did go back to sleep shortly after, though. And had forgotten all about it when I woke up for good, so go figure.

Miss you too, ATK. Come out to play more :)!

Great idea...

I love it when a woman makes me feel like the earth is moving under my feet ... but I don't know about literally ;).

I heard the rumble of the

I heard the rumble of the quake grew louder, suddenly the floor felt like an ocean wave. I jumped out of bed and ran to the door. As I stood there I noticed that the water in the fish tank went from side to side and over spilled. All the glass in the living room rattled. When it was over there was a dead silence outside, nothing from the dogs or birds outside. Even though it was only a few seconds, it felt longer.

At least no one was hurt.

I know how the fish feel

I was in the bathtub when the Loma Prieta quake hit. The water went all over the place. It was the grout under the sink breaking out and falling on the floor that scared me. During the Northridge quake, I was in Reno, sleeping. The hangers in the closet started rattling. The first thought I had was if they can't get along, we'll just have to separate them. I can only imagine how scary that one was for everybody in SoCal.
Lezbeth

If they can't get along...

That reminds me of a dream I had about my clothes fighting in the closet. I was going to meet a lady the next day and couldn't decide what to wear. I was determined not to be that vain chick who goes out and buys the right thing for a date, but I am seriously fashion deprived. I hate clothes shopping, and my closet shows it. In my dream, all my outfits were pushing and shoving and dissing each other. I woke up about the time they started with the Yo' Mamma jokes.

How funny

It doesn't sound like any of them won the shoving match.

Northridge 94'

I was 13 or 14 and shaken awake to that sixer we had. I jumped out of bed and ran underneath my tiny little desk. While sprinting the five feet across my room a small porcelain dog flew off my shelf and rammed me in the forehead. I was bleeding but ok as I held on for dear life accepting the fact that this could be it.
The dog was a Lhasa Apso. It didn't even break.
I'm glad every one is ok!

Okay now I'm totally confused!

If there is a quake, and you are in a crumbly pre 1920's building in hollywood (with a leaky elevator) -- do you run out of there like a bat out of Hell or do you dive under your desk and risk being bonked in the head by your paper weight?

GOOD QUESTION

IT SEEMS TO ME THAT IF THE BUILDING IZ THAT OLD THEN YOU'D BE BETTER OF OUTSIDE,HOWEVER YOU COULD GET SMASHED ON THE HEAD BY FALLING PHONE POLES,FALL INTO CRACKS IN THE STREET,OR EVEN GET HIT BY PIECES OF THE BUILDING. SO WITH THAT IN MIND I WOULD GO WITH THE TABLE BECAUSEI'D RATHER HAVE A LITTLE BUMP FROM THE PAPER WEIGHT THAN BE CHICKEN LITTLE YAA-MEAN

Stay put and inside!

Your building was built prior to the 1933 Long Beach quake. Since it is still standing, and likely has been through several retrofits, it's probably one of the safest buildings you can be in.

Still, get under the desk, just in case. If you still have one of those old metal bathtubs, jump into that. Don't run outside, because if anything is going to fall first, it will be those wonderful outer brick walls. Those tend to fall down and away from the main structure. That is what happened with the Whittier Narrows quake, which killed 4 from failing outer walls.

When it comes to old buildings,

I'm all about the doorway. The desk is one more layer of what can crush you.

Doorways...

The Whittier Narrows earthquake hit as I was literally just moving into an apartment in Long Beach. I broke three fingers on my left hand, and lost two nails (shattered) when the now wildly swinging door that weighed 80 lbs slammed shut on them.

Hence why I do not recommend doorways.

I didn't feel anything. Then

I didn't feel anything. Then again, my brother said he thinks I had all ready left the house, which means I was driving. He felt it.

Doesn't surprise me, though. I've been waiting for the pressure to be relieve on this side of the world, since the far east has been having high magnitudes and the west coast has been rather quiet.

I guess I should have kept my mouth shut. I told mom, when I got here last week, I was ready for a shake n' bake. I remember the shake'n bake week back in the fall of 1987. I was living in Peñasquitos back then. I came to visit mom for her birthday in 2003 - and I told her they were going to get hit with fire. October 2003 was really bad.

I'm glad everyone is ok...

LA Quake

Funny thing about earthquakes...you don't know what to do when it's happening. You can't ride a horse out of town, get into a car and drive away from it, or hold on to something to make it stop..you just have to roll with it. When the quake is actually happening, it's bizarre because as everything is moving around and under you, you have no control and it feels as if you are losing your balance. I hope we're not in for another one.

I'm glad everyone is okay.

Earthquake Veteran

My first one was the Whittier Narrows earthquake, and I've been through many since. One thing I do know is that an earthquake can occur ANYWHERE IN THE US. I live just a few miles from where today's hit, and my roommate reports the home is fine, albeit a mess from things falling off the walls and shelves (I'm in Joplin, MO today). Today's rather minor earthquake hit a few miles from and below my home.

The following web sites have emergency preparedness information regarding how to prepare for and what to do during and after an earthquake (as well as other emergency preparedness information):

http://www.ready.gov
http://lafd.org/eqbook.pdf
http://earthquake.usgs.gov/learning/preparedness.php

Also, I've learned through various emergencies that your cell phones SMS text messaging is the best way to contact others without overwhelming the phone system (which crashed due to media hype about this quake). A simple "R U OK?" or "IM OK" is short, sweet, and more likely to get through than a voice call, and leaves the 911 system up and running to handle real emergencies.

BTW, Florida, Iowa, North Dakota, and Wisconsin are the only US states to not have recorded an earthquake (yet). California is the most prepared to deal with earthquakes, while the Mississippi Valley region is the least prepared (despite the latter recording more seriously damaging quakes).

Great Info Thx

Another suggestion

Don't hop in the car and drive. I was at a conference not far from the epicenter ofi the Loma Prieta quake when it hit. Many people there freaked out and rushed to their cars to get home. They didn't know that the bay bridge and 880 collapsed. Soon after that, we were advised to stay put overnight so that roads and highways could be checked for structural damage.
Lezbeth

Humm...

Excellent advice............

I was wondering about you!

Glad you're ok! :)

Hi Taiowa !!

Thanks for your concern..... I'm doing fine. No tsunami's so that's a good thing!I guess I shouldn't joke about it, but no one was injured in this one... so all is good !!

How is your Dad? I hope that he's doing better.......
prayers x 1,000

:)

Hey Longbeach! (WHEW!) Glad all is well!

Heard about the quake at work last night and thought of you. Thank you for the prayers! My dad's doing better. He's in the therapy wing of the hospital now. He's B.S.ing so that's a good sign. LOL!

Have a great evening, :)

Ditto on the "...glad everyone of you are okay!"

I'm just sayin'.....

Quite a shake.....

This seemed pretty intense. A roll with a big shake at the end. Nothing compared to the Northridge or Loma Prieta quakes.

I lost a ton of water out of my swimming pool and pictures fell off of shelves. But, my house appears intact and the structure seems sound. I have "earthquake proofed" my house fairly well...... it seemed to work. A good test for "the big one", I suppose.

I'm glad to hear that all of our OC sisters, here in CA, are okay. *deep breath*

And, girls.... keep your gas tanks full. Gas stations don't work when the electricity is out. It was impossible to get gas after the Northridge quake.

As a native, I'm so used to them.....I can gage their magnitude, it's almost a twisted thing to do. I guessed 5.8 my neighbor 5.6... I guess we were both off a bit today !!

I was wondering about you

While on the treadmill at the gym, I saw the news and wondered how it was for you there. Those other two quakes you mentioned were a big deal. I was in the Loma Prieta one and was in Reno when the Northridge quake hit. That one rattled the clothes hangers in the hotel room closet. I'm glad you and others in SoCal are doing well.

Hi Lezbeth...

What is going on here in paradise..... fires, earthquakes, droughts!

Oh well, we are a hearty stock here in the West. At least, that's what my Great-Grandmother always told me.

Thanks Lezbeth.....

You know what the right-wingers say

Yep, it was in our local paper, letters to the editor. The writer said this disaster is because California has allowed same sex marriage. Go figure. I wonder what the Texans did to bring that hurricane on shore...
