Tuesday Quotes Roundup: 04-10

I'm feeling a little… meta today for the Tuesday Quotes Roundup. I'm feeling like opening with a quote about quotes. Hmmm… what can I dig up here? Aha! Here's a lovely opener:

"Hanging is too good for a man who makes puns; he should be drawn and quoted." - Fred Allen

Ha! Ha! Okay, that put me right in the mood. Because today's Quotes Roundup is all about the outrageous, the short-sighted, the shockingly ridiculous things people will say. In fact, I could have made an entire post out of the stupid things Don Imus says, but I kept it to two. And just to end on a high note, I'm introducing a new element to the Tuesday Quotes Roundup: The OurChart Comment of the Week!

Let us commence:

Quote #1: "I'm not a bad person; I'm a good person, but I said a bad thing. But these young women deserve to know it was not said with malice." - Don Imus

For those of you who've been [insert your favorite "living under a rock" metaphor here] over the past week, the quote above refers to radio jock Don Imus's recent characterization of the Rutger's women's basketball team as -- no lie -- "nappy-headed ho's."

Now, it is, of course, wrong to refer to anyone as a "nappy-headed ho." I cannot believe that I am forced to type that here, now, in the 21st century, but there you go. But let us observe further that if anyone wants to make a slur on someone's hair, Don Imus is the last who should do so:

Second, let us note, please, that Imus's claim that the phrase was "not said with malice" is a remarkable bit of spin. So, we are to believe it was it said with affection? Oh, you nappy-headed ho's! How Imus loves ya! Say it with a chuckle and a fatherly shake of the head.

Nah, still doesn't work.

Quote #2: ""I can't get anywhere with you people." - Don Imus

Whoa! He's still at it! Imus uttered this gem on Al Sharpton's radio show, where he'd gone to perform penance. He didn't like that phone-in guest Rep. Carolyn Cheeks Kilpatrick was continuing to criticize him, so… who to blame? That's right: Those people.

Sharpton took umbrage immediately. "Who is 'you people'?" he asked. To which Imus replied -- I am not making this up -- "That's jive. I mean, you two people." Anyone here remember that classic 1980 comedy "Airplane"? Where the black passengers spoke in "Jive" and there were subtitles below? That was funny 30 years ago. It's not meant to have real-life parallels.

Quote #3: "My generation is not afraid of staying single, so we don't hesitate to invest money on skill development." - Yukiko, a 31-year-old Japanese lesbian.

Whoa. Exactly what kinds of skills are they developing over there in Japan? This is a story about how much money the Japanese gay market represents, but I have to say, it seems a lot more exciting than your usual business-section economics story.

Quote #4:: "Never once in my 54 years have I ever once heard a gay or lesbian person who’s politically active say one thing about anything that was not about them. They don’t care about minimum wage, they don’t care about any other group other than their own self because you know, some people say being gay and lesbian is a totally narcissistic thing and sometimes I wonder... It’s no different than the evangelicals, it’s the same mindset." - Roseanne

Okay, first of all, this isn't true. There are plenty of gay and lesbian people in activism who activize about other things. They're just not then known as gay activists. The gay activists, shockingly enough, are known for being… activists on gay rights. Sheesh. This ain't rocket science, hon.

Also, just as a side note, being active as an evangelical is a lit-tle different from being a gay activist, dear Roseanne. Evangelicals insist that everyone should be like them, under threat of hell (no less). Gay activists just want everyone just not to kill / discriminate against / be mean to us. Big difference there. So, lay off the gays, would ya? Your co-star from the Roseanne show, out lesbian Sara Gilbert, would probably appreciate it.

And now… after that compendium of irresponsible, irritating, irrigational (sorry, I couldn't think of another "ir" word) quotes, a more uplifting (or at least amusing) quote is here to lift all our collective boats:

The winner of the first ever OurChart Comment of the Week award is… Neo Mugwump, with this gem:

"I will take your comment as a compliment as I take almost anything anyone says that way. The only exception would be my Miranda Rights but only if delivered when I am spread-eagled across the hood of a police car. Fortunately that hasn't happened in over a week so I'm good."

Thank you, Neo! And thanks to all our fine commenters, and all the eejits who say dumb things in the news and keep the Tuesday Quotes Roundup hopping!

Tomorrow: Curtain Number Three!

Time for Action

I was just reading an article in the magazine BITCH that fits the Imus and Roseanne comments perfectly. The article discusses how "we" the citizens of this country let famous people get away with making comments that hurt others. People still buy their products and watch their movies, TV show, and videos. Even after Paris Hilton yelled inapporpriate comments at two African American men she still gets work and "we" still watch and buy her products. The "regular" citizens of this country need to show that we will not tolerate such comments by not supporting people after they are made!

Hold the phone.

Sara Gilbert is a Lesbian? Where the hell have I been. It seems I'm just crawling out from under my rock right now, but this is news to me. I gotta say, that makes me all tingly in my nether-regions. I've always been jealous of that David guy on that show cause I always had a thing for Darlene. Who else came out that I have yet to hear about?

not only is she a lesbian...

...she and Allison Adler (Simpsons writer, I think?) have a kid and another on the way:

It kinda warms my heart :)

My thoughts...

Hello, All

You will not believe the ignorance of the media and some people are saying, “He has the right to say what ever that is why the MSNBC hire Imus. He can say whatever because the first amendment gives him permission.”

The Morning of April 4th, 2007, MSNBC’s Imus in the Morning, the host Don Imus referred to the Rutgers University women’s basketball team, as “Nappy-headed hos” then add to insult the show’s executive producer Bernard McGuirk, refers to the team “Hard-core hos”. McGuirk continues speaking “the championship game between Rutgers and Tennessee as a “Spike Lee Thing”, “The Jigaboos vs The Wannabees”” This Azz-hole was referring to Spike’s Lee’s movie “School Daze”.

MSNBC is separating themselves away from Imus and issue an apology. Well, Imus and McGuirk should be made to do complete 2000 Community hours in an inner city helping those who are in need and send him to a federal prison for 30 days. What an Azz-Hole.

However, Some media’s individuals and some people take it to the next level and hide behind the first amendment. Be a man, admit your inappropriate behavior and take the consequences like a man, Imus and McGuirk. MSNBC cracks me up, MSNBC detaches themselves from the two individuals and do not want to take responsibility for misdoing by their own staff members. MSNBC should be held accountable as well.

On April 5th , an article referred to Imus’ comments on the MSNBC website, “Imus said people should relax and worry about ‘some idiot comment meant to be amusing.’”

On April 6th, two days after the insulting comments, Don Imus of the MSNBC’s Imus in the morning, made an apology and some other crap with it.

You will be able to view the incident and the apology as well and please tell me your feelings.

Life is short for drama and let's enjoy life as best as we can.

Another one bites the dust

MSNBC said Wednesday it will drop its simulcast of the “Imus in the Morning” radio program, responding to growing outrage over the radio host’s racial slur against the Rutgers women’s basketball team.

In a statement, NBC News announced "this decision comes as a result of an ongoing review process, which initially included the announcement of a suspension. It also takes into account many conversations with our own employees. What matters to us most is that the men and women of NBC Universal have confidence in the values we have set for this company. This is the only decision that makes that possible."

The network statement went on to say, "Once again, we apologize to the women of the Rutgers basketball team and to our viewers. We deeply regret the pain this incident has caused."

(MSNBC TV is wholly owned by NBC Universal. MSNBC.com is a joint venture between NBC Universal and Microsoft).

The network’s decision came after a growing list of sponsors — including American Express Co., Staples Inc., Procter & Gamble Co., and General Motors Corp. — said they were pulling ads from Imus’ show for the indefinite future.

Howard is prolly laughing

Howard is prolly laughing his ass off at this one!!! Someone should just throw dirt on the ol' crow anyway!!!

ROSEANNE'S APOLOGY.....

I deeply regret that I have offended gay people. I said things that I do not really mean, before I had thought them through... I was wrong and I seriously apologize!
What I really meant to say... which was that everybody needs to unite right now, and step outside of their own neighborhoods, groups, races and classes to stop Bush's war on our country and our people. I love gays and I hate division. I am just a big idiot with a big mouth sometimes. I will learn to be more careful! Please forgive me, I am so sorry!!!!

The leaders of gay groups need to align with the leaders of Acorn, and other groups of poor and desperate Americans and fight against those who oppress all of us!

I have met too many gays who are Republicans, and I cannot understand how they could choose that!

Let's all leave our own bedrooms, kitchens, neighborhoods and groups and meet each other to form a diverse army that stands for Democracy and Economic Justice!!!!

(Again I apologize for any pain or hurt I have caused those whom I have always loved and befriended).

Oh My!!!!

Sh** I always tought Roseanne Barr was a closeted lesbian maybe she need to stop repressing all those feelings and come out of the closet already lol.

Always On The Real!!!

OMG

Okay, the never-ending litany of inane remarks just amazes me. I never liked Roseanne Barr. Now I REALLY don't like her. And as for Imus...he is, and always has been, and idiot. The whole idea of "shock jocks" is annoying. Let's just make fun of everyone and therefore no one should be offended. What nonsense....

Don Imus

He certainly got some publicity, didn't he? Fortunately, some of his sponsors have wised up and pulled $ support from his show. Just because something is said "without malice" does not mean he didn't mean it. Get him off the air and on to something else. NEXT!!!!

i had to add my part

lovelikeme

Well no doubt some folks still don't get it...was the insult the nappy or the ho ....if it were a all white team would he have said those stringy haired ho's...(everyone can have nappy hair, you just call it tangled)!(smile) I smile because i know he's beyond stupid I'm sad because he shares the same opinion as many others who r in positions of radio and tv and spotlite professions..The big picture...Those young lady's all are beutiful and imus is ****a hot mess****I want that a**hole to just get fired...I guess the team will get as much press as the crazy astronaut, anna nicole baby daddy,...Stuff that happens everyday to everyday people...I'm waiting on my press conference.
-Hurt em with kindness but leave em alone

Roll back the tapes

My only problem is if they had been white stringy haired hoes or greasy headed hoes they wouldn't have to review anything they would've just fired him on the spot. But cause they were nappy headed hoes on a predominately black team, the network has to "review". Besides isn't he kind of old to be on air. He looks like he's seen a dinosaur or two in his day

queer activism

I was reading on the internet the other day about a group of gays and lesbians who get together every 3rd friday of the month to go to a straight bar and sort of take over the place in a non confrontational kind of way. Their motto to add another good quote is "were here, were queer and we wanna beer".
Speaking of queer activism, having been an activist in many aspects of my life it never ceases to amaze me how many lesbians are very involved in things like a woman's right to abortion (an issue we rarely have to face) spousal abuse (mostly an issue in straight couples lives although not exclusive) and other feminist issues. The women who run the battered womens shelters, staff the abortion clinic and the hot lines for women or show up at rallys, raise money for breast cancer funding and other things that require time and lots of effort are so often grossly outnumbered by lesbians that it makes me laugh. We fight for our sisters and our children and our libraries and so many of the humanitarian things that make this world a better place. You take a look at any left wing organization and I suspect you will see a disproprotionate number of gays and lesbians working on those projects when we are a megear 10% of the population. Is Roseanne blind to this? or is she just so narcissistic that she cant' see beyond her own strange issues? And as for Imus, it does not suprise me that he would resort to that kind of insult, men are always threatend by strong capable women and will do anything to try to bring us down. By calling these fine talented women nappy headed ho's he was trying to belittle their accomplishments. To make them less than. Would he say that about the men's basketball team? I doubt it! He is just another Ann coulter trying to make headlines by being a jerk. We need to stop supporting their shows and listening to their garbage. And we must continue to fight the good fight because we are strong and like the Rutgers players, our character will shine through, and those who try to bring us down will be the ones who end up stinking at the end of the day.

OT: Larry Birkhead Is a Daddy

Sorry to be OT. I can sleep easier now, won't you? Larry Birkhead (of Anna Nicole Smith fame) will be able to afford better highlights, now that he's been crowned Mr. Baby Daddy 2007.

This whole thing could have been settled weeks ago if the judge had sent all of the potential fathers to appear on "Maury". Maury gets paternity results within an hour.

Roseanne's Revival Tent

Roseanne is a puzzle, wrapped inside a conundrum. I believe she said she has integrated all of her multiple personalities. While I've never known her to loathe gay people (and she is involved with The Trevor Project), she often says some pretty loopy things. Sometimes they are generalized statements spoken in the heat of the moment, and sometimes she's just simply off her nut. I must say, this recent quote of hers has me plenty pissed off. But... I'm just going to take a deep breath and not flame her.

Lisa, if I may, here are some more quotes from Roseanne World

Roseanne World is her blog, and it offers a interesting snapshot of where her mind is at these days. Also, her own words explain why I'm putting her on ignore.

“On my day of declaration, which was approximately 26 years ago, I saw myself hexing the world's leaders in 2007. I hereby cast a hex of consciousness upon them...to see the cost of their actions.”

“Revenge of the (clones) Fetuses is happening now. This is the rebirth of the Goddess Miriam. (mary mother of god). She is Cleopatra and she is Isis. SHE IS THE GODDESS MM...the african goddess who's name is ma ma… ma ma don't play that shit. ma ma has decided that now is the correct time for the knowledge of parthenogenesis to return to the earthling. Look it up, asshole!”

She said this about Mary Magdalene:

“They killed her son to get rid of the last vestige of The Goddess, upon whom all the world's religions are based. They then killed all the women who knew the truth behind christianity. It was the war of the women that still goes on now...blaming men is a great cover for it, but again, it is my theory that women are to blame for everything that men do.”

Crazy bag lady much?

This quote has been around for ages:

Rosanne

On the local level here I see the GLBT community working side by side on lots of issues not specifically targeted at our community...environmental, schools, healthcare, peace & justice...what I don't see enough of is the straight community working side by side with us to tackle the issues facing our community or to help us when we are under attack. Roseanne likes to say things to shock...well, you shocked me...I thought you were a "friendly." Guess not.

As I sit here reading the always tantalizing Tuesday Quotes Roundup, I am watching Roseanne on Nike@Nite. I'm not sure if any of you women loving ladies are aware, but a few nights a week, the lovely people at Nick@Nite play Roseanne for like 7 hours straight. It is always a surprise and a treat when my clicker happens upon Nickelodeon. I always loved Roseanne, Jackie, Darlene, and Becky #1...but now...now I see things in a whole new light.

And excuse me Ro...but if memory serves, I haven't seen you in the political spotlight recently. At least gay activists stand up for something that needs standing up for. Go make yourself useful...stand up for something you believe in and leave us alone. I don't know...maybe you could be an old, ugly, washed up comic activist.

Well now I'm just mad...
