I don't know how to tell unless they're a bit butch, or have something rainbow on them. Being really pro equal rights and anti-homophobic sets of alarms though. I really have to be told in the end!

When I came out to my friends they said the same kind of thing. "I never would have guessed. You don't look like a lesbian." My family thinks the same thing. It almost seems like they think im making it up. Should make things pretty interesting for whenever I have a girlfriend! People never guess that I'm gay. I can only pick out butch girls but I'm sooo not into them. I've got to find a way to detect more femme lez girls. Hang in there browneyglo. I feel ya!

wow - that's an amazing question and, while we are having fun with this one, the serious answer is that...
there is no one way to tell anymore, is there???
back in the 1950's thru 1970's or so, i wonder now, if those butch/femme-dressing couples were really dressing and acting that way because they were different on the gender spectrum OR were they really two pretty average femmes thinking they had to act the part????
also - the more interesting question to me is....
why is this - being able to tell if someone is gay - so important to us????
there are many obvious reasons. while i won't tease this discussion out here, one of our greatest needs around this issue is knowing because most of the time, we feel so isolated.
speaking of which - you know - i've heard all the numbers bandied about re: how many there are of us. lately folks are saying there are less of us - say 1-3% of the population - than the traditional 10%. and that there are less lesbians than gay men. i think these 'low ball' numbers are touted by mostly the 'enemies' - those who don't want us to live our truths, to 'split' us, to depress us and to try and get us feeling a scarcity mentality......
i suspect the percentage of lesbians in the female US population is greater than 3% and maybe less than 10%! but not by much. why do i say that? because...
there are so many woman still out there...
- dying to come out but not courageous enough to do so
- who don't know yet they are lesbian because society is so self-denying, esp. towards girls/women
- hiding for whatever reason (and we know there are many reasons here)
- who experience themselves as bi but would probably be fully lesbian if that choice were more acceptable
add all of these to the 2-3% of us who ARE courageous enough to be living 'full out' and i'll bet close to 10% of U.S. women are lesbians.

(just being herself - sometimes nails are painted, mostly not; sometimes nails longer, usually not; 99.9% of time wears women's pants, but not usually dockers; has a dog - cats make me wheeze; love sports and was a tomboy as a child - have become a 'too cerebral' adult; wears longish hair now but wore it short most of the time not because i'm a dyke but because i have very thick, wavy hair that looks almost ridiculous too long; loves to wear makeup; is more female psychologically than male, etc.)
