Ummm...that doesn't look right.

Okay, so I've decided that I want to get in shape. I've started working out and, with the help of my athletically built girlfriend (I hate her), have also started eating right. I have cut out as much sugar as possible and have been eating more protein and fruits and vegetables, drinking more water; doing all the stuff you should be doing in the first place. It's been a week since I weighed myself. I feel good, I have more energy and I step on the scale this morning and...wait...WHAT?...there are 2 EXTRA POUNDS on the scale! What kind of crap is this? Do you mean to tell me this week's worth of hard work was for nothing? Granted it's only been a week but still! Oh wait...I vaguely (VERY vaguely) remember my trainer telling me not to become a slave to the scale...that I will probably gain before I lose but it's muscle and that the real indicator of loss comes in how my clothes fit me. Oh...well...that makes me feel a little better. I guess we'll see what the next week brings. Damn lying scale.

Hey woman, you have good vibes, right on!

Well, first thing I was thinking when I started reading your blog is, "Don't be a slave to the scale." And then you went right ahead and said it, even if it sounded to me like that will be a struggle for you to disengage from. More important than anything is getting your fuel (food) and water consumption dialed in...and you will see a huge change with just that even if you do no exercise...but you will exercise later because you'll be starting to look and feel so much better that you'll WANT MORE. But don't worry about that right now, stay focused on what you are putting in your mouth, which it sounds like you are. :)

As a point of reference, this is a little about me: I'm 39, 5' 7", 140 lb, somewhere under 30% body fat (don't know exactly) and I'm a size 6 - 8. In my early 30's, at the pinnacle of my fitness adventures so far, I was about 130 (or just under), around or just under 15% body fat, and was a size 2 - 4. Did you notice there's only about a 10 lb difference in weight, a big difference in BODY FAT, and a 50% difference in clothing size? Are you digging the correlation above?

Muscle weighs more than fat, those are the facts ma'am, and the more muscle tone you have, the less space it takes up (clothing sizes). Fat weighs less than muscle and takes up more space.

So, like you, I'm on a mission right now with my fitness. I don't have plans to be the uber athlete I was, but I know how to eat and hydrate, now I'm just being MINDFUL and MAKING MYSELF DO IT. I had a lot of stress over the last 5 years, and that's all I'm gonna say about that, which guess what? On top of everything else suckey about stress, it MAKES YOU FAT. WTF?! lol (but it ain't funny, it's freakin' true.)

Pay attention to how your clothes are fitting and the yowza-yowza factor from your woman and others, fuck the scale. :)

Onward, Jodie

Thank you!

Hey, thanks for the encouraging words Sister Sledge (sorry, it's a bad habit that I just can't break...everyone is Sister Sledge)! I know I'll never be itty bitty. I'm not built for it. The last time I lost weight I was pretty muscular but my clothes were smaller and I looked great! Over the years I put on more weight and...well...the rest is history. And you're right, stress does make you fat! I've pledged to get in shape in the past but I'm determined to stick with it this time.
