Choking in the Clutch

In case you missed it, Democrats are tanking. Fundraising isn't going as well as the Obama camp projected when they decided to forgo public financing, new national polls out this week are giving a slight one- to two-point edge to McCain for the first time since the campaign began and, perhaps most illuminating, a Washington Post/ABC poll released Wednesday found that white women have shifted from giving Obama an eight-point pre-convention edge to giving McCain a 12-point post-convention advantage all in the course of two weeks.

Hmmm... just guessing that's not solely due to McCain's winning personality. In fact, crowds are turning out in droves to watch the Sarah Palin show and her sidekick McCain. Let's face it, Palin has temporarily knocked Obama on his ass. Ah, the irony. Not only might the female VP choice Barack didn't make be his undoing, but it turns out Hillary was oh-so-right about Obambi's inexperience. Now that the Republican attack machine is throttling him, Obama's been caught flat-flooted and, quite frankly, looking a little desperate in his interviews. Score two points for the ladies (Palin and Hill); negative three for the fellas (Obama, Biden, McCain). And let's all join in for a collective, "I told you so!"

Okay, now that we've gotten that outta the way, let's get down to business: Wake up lesbian nation. Get over your Hillary regret if it persists. If we hold a grudge now, we'll only have ourselves to thank as we spend the next four years watching Palin/McCain reduce taxes for the wealthiest Americans (That doesn't include you and me.), drill for oil in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, reignite the cold war with Russia, put off any hope of positive movement on LGBT issues and orchestrate the swearing in of several Justice Scalitos — thereby rendering the Supreme Court the most conservative in a century and dooming Roe v. Wade once and for all.

In the name of women everywhere, get off your butts, volunteer, give money, text/e-mail every one of your friends and family and tell them to give money. Sound the alarms, cuz the Republicans have tapped into a more subtle midwestern strain of feminism that 20-point swing from Obama to McCain means they've got emotion on their side and if they keep it, they will win this election.

The problem is that emotions not issues guide voters. It doesn't matter one bit that Obama actually has a written plan to support working women. All those middle America women who have felt marginalized for years by their bosses, their husbands and our political parties now feel like they have someone they can identify with. Worse yet, the GOP is using Palin's gender to both keep those very women from getting to know Ms. Guv and to demonize Obama. When Obama said Tuesday, "If you put lipstick on a pig, it's still a pig," (referring to McCain recasting himself as an agent of change), the McCain campaign accused him of playing the gender card. And now that the media has descended upon Alaska like a herd of wild moose, McCainiacs say scrutiny of Palin's record is sexist. Well, give me a break; this whole thing is the biggest fairy tale I've ever seen, to quote Bill Clinton.

Here's what's sexist: McCain hasn't let Miss Sarah answer a single question yet on the campaign trail. Apparently, she's just eye candy. She draws the crowds, says everything the speechwriters tell her to say, stands by her man and he gets elected. (Anyone else notice the smirk on his face as he stands next to her at rallies?)

No way, no how, no McCain. The media should be fact checking every last piece of Sarah Palin right down to the name of her lipstick pig or no pig and that ain't sexist in the least. It's patriotic. In elections for the White House, it's just standard operating procedure something McCain, with all his military cred, should be in favor of. Palin shouldn't be allowed to lead America across a bridge to nowhere while the truth gets washed away. It's just not okay that she keeps trumpeting her opposition to that $400 million, tax-payer-funded project when she whole-heartedly backed the bridge originally, t-shirt to boot.

But again, the truth doesn't seem to matter and, apparently, a number of people — women, in particular — may well vote against their pocketbook interests based on a well of pride that swells up in them every time they see Sarah Palin's mug. Well, I don't know about you, but I, for one, don't want this woman to get a pass to White House in the name of feminism.

Bush Doctrine; Bush Doctrine

Could someone refresh my memory about what exactly the Bush Doctrine is?

Are we talking about The Doctrine that led to:

The deaths of 4155 US service members and between 87,000 to 96,000 Iraqi deaths - That Bush Doctrine?

A $341.4 million per day bill to the American people (or our kids and grand kids, more accurately - That Bush Doctrine?

The shredding of our reputation as "The last best hope for democracy" throughout the world - That Bush Doctrine?

I am waiting for the foreign policy Republicans to weigh in on McBush's decision to try to win an election instead of choosing a qualified running mate in what many people are calling one of the most important elections in US history. I'm calling our Hagel, Powell, Rice, and Lugar specifically.

(Sorry about the emphasis. I was channeling my inner Olbermann.)

Here's a "fun" cost of the Iraq War widget that you can play with the next time some moron wants to make an issue of whether using a common colloquialism is sexist.

My take on the Bush Doctrine

It's the doctrine that says the mediocre shall rise to the top.

I think Charles Gibson asked

I think Charles Gibson asked a bit of a trick question. I knew that Bush had a policy of "pre-emptive strikes" against another country, but I wouldn't have remembered that it was called the "Bush Doctrine."

I'm sure it was the same with Palin. Not defending her too much, but hey in all fairness Obama has made a few gaffes like that as well.

But you are not running for vp...

...are you?

Don't you think there would be trick questions in diplomacy or in dealing with difficult situations or leaders?

Or are we still bombing first and ask questions later?

Apparently you didn't scroll

Apparently you didn't scroll down and read my other comments or you would have seen that I have yielded to their argument that she is most definitely unprepared. In fact I knew that already. :)

Can't agree

That it's a "trick" question. And if you didn't know it, well, you're not running for VP, are you? No, the Bush Doctrine is a commonly used term used round the world and has very specific origins in Bush's National Security Strategy from September 2002. Just Google it to see how many entries it brings up. It's even in Wikipedia, for god's sake! She should absolutely know this, especially since we know they've been prepping her non-stop.

Agreed. I'll give you this

Agreed. I'll give you this one. :)

The "Bush Doctrine" is the centerpiece of his foreign policy

McBush is even ready for act two - Bomb, bomb, bomb Iran.

McBush said she's qualified. This was an easy one that the neo-cons should have had her ready for. (Foreign policy is not my forte so I think anything I can answer off the top of my head, the governor of the state closest to Russia ought to know, too.)

We've had 18 or so months to watch Obama on the campaign. We can judge his gaffes in the totality of everything else we know about him. Her? Not so much.

My dear Rusty you're the best

I agree with the first part of your post. Yes, the Republicans should indeed have had her ready for that question.

Yet, should we judge her solely on her gaffe because we know so little about her? Doesn't seem quite fair.

xoxo

p.s. Just because I disagree with most of her politics doesn't mean I should always believe the worst about her.

My dear PK (I'm being serious)

McBush decided to pluck an unknown and put her in that position. He has also shielded her from answering all reporters (except Gibson) questions. Gerry Ferraro faced reporters in a press conference within (I think) 48 hours of her nomination. And did a fantastic job.

If she doesn't know the easy stuff and he dies then who will she take direction from? Cheney?

I think it was a fair question.

I was being serious too

I was being serious too about the dear Rusty part. :)
I don't disagree with you one bit. She should have known this.

I don't want to pile on

By the end of the interview I actually felt a bit sorry for her. This is McCain's doing, though she should have had the good sense to realize she's nowhere near prepared. I felt uncomfortable during the whole interview because I felt she had a set of prepared "talking points" and intended to always bring the conversation back to where she felt "safe." It's not fun to watch someone in that position. I also don't see this as fitting the definition of a "gaffe," which generally involves misspeaking. She simply did not know something that is critical to US foreign policy.

She does know. She admitted

She does know.

She admitted to not even knowing ANYTHING and that she was going to be schooled in the next 3 months on everything.

And in her "speech" in Alaska, at her church - or some church, she was talking that Bush sent our troops over there in the name of "God" ..."our national leaders are sending them out on a task from God"

...and then in an interview, on ABC, she was given a chance to clarify it by quoting Abe Lincoln by saying...

"the reference there is a repeat of Abraham Lincoln words, when he said, first he suggested, never presume to know what God's will is - and I would never presume to know God's will and speak God's words. But what Abraham Lincoln had said, and that's a repeat in my comments was, "let us not pray that God is on our side - in a war or any other time - but let us pray that we are on God's side" - that was what that comment was, Charlie."

Boy! Did she side step that or what!

She was preaching - as a politician - at the pulpit. Infusing our foreign politics with religion AND GIVING PURPOSE TO THE ACTIONS...in the name of "God".

A no-no in my book. She clearly does not separate church and state.

Well, I think Bill Clinton

Well, I think Bill Clinton was right when he said that Obama will "win handedly." If Palin keeps this up people will catch on pretty quickly that she's not ready.

I feel kind of sorry for her too.

Why would you feel sorry for her?

Anyone who accepts such an important job while KNOWING she is not prepared just puts her greed or ambition above all else.
You know the type!
She is no victim, here...

She may have over-reached

but I think calling her greedy is unfair. I'm reluctant to second-guess her motives. She probably has not felt fully prepared to do ANY of the positions she's been elected to, but has gamely plunged in and learned on the job. Who here hasn't had to fly by the seat of their pants at one time or another? Clearly, the stakes in THIS situation are too high for that kind of philosophy, but McCain has exploited it and I do have some sympathy for her.

I would agree...only if she

I would agree...only if she HAD NO choice.

She has a choice - and if she doesn't, then well, we need a whole new government. Pronto.

I was thinking

about JFK....

he's our youngest president yet at 41. he did have about 13 years public service (a + but he was soooo young), a phenomenal war record, a family with strong political influence, was under appreciated for being roman catholic, was a really impressive candidate on tv vs nixon in the debates (celebrity status even), had a lot of health issues that were later disclosed and also had a lot of back surgeries and illnesses that affected him - and was probably a little distracted from his duties by the women in his life.

he is a good mix of most the negatives/positives from the candidates we have running today - youth, war, celebrity status, not mainstream in religion, health issues (mccain's age being a potential one) , and so on..

i wonder if he were on the current ticket what we would be saying as a country about his ability to lead. he didn't have a long tenure, but he did have some motivational speeches and quotes which are still with us and inspiring our nation and the world today - "Ich Bin Ein Berliner!" Ja!

Kennedy's a tough one

I think because of his untimely, violent death there's just no way to compare him to anyone. But I get your point. There's been a whole lot of talk in this campaign about "experience," but it's been a rather shallow examination. And I don't think there's been nearly enough of a discussion about what constitutes good leadership. Clearly, as you cite with JFK, it's an amalgam of qualities and I don't think anyone can really predict with all certainty who will be a good president. How do we know what someone is ultimately capable of? Experience counts in the "past is prologue" sense, but I think too often we view that experience in very narrow terms. It's not just about what bills somebody has passed but what is the vision that underlies their decisions and how skilled are they at implementing it, whether through inspiration or back-room arm-twisting or who knows what.

That said, I think one of Kennedy's stand-out qualities was his ability to learn quickly and learn from his mistakes. I mean the guy made some doozies--Bay of Pigs, for instance. But he had the intellectual capacity and clarity of vision to refocus and get it right the next time. I want someone as President who has that kind of energy, focus, and nimbleness of mind.

if she were a confident, "arrogant", he

would all of you be complaining so much?

but i guess it was the same for hillary when she came along and wanted to accomplish her own goals in her own life in her own way - even though she was just "the wife" and not an elected official - i mean, palin is actually an elected official, and not the wife of one, and she's confident, "arrogant", and saying yes unabashedly....

more power to her :)

- and if she were a liberal with traditional feminist views you all would not be complaining about her one bit... you'd be defending her for her self assuredness and can do attitude. and i am sure the sexism argument would be flying left and left!

If Palin had more

If Palin had more experience, and had the same views I had...

I'd vote for her.

But she doesn't - and she ain't getting my vote. I'm not voting for pussy - I'm voting for issues.

Not if she was a liberal...

... but if she was competent. Not even those who desagreed with her, NO BODY could ever accuse Hill to be incompetent! She was extremely qualified for the job.

about her being used by McCain. There are only two possible explanations:
1. she didn't see it, didn't know any better. Then she is not very smart. Couldn't possibly deal with Putin, for exemple...

2. she knew it, but didn't care. Then she is in it for all the wrong reasons. Have your pick: greed, ambition, or she agrees with the conservative agenda to the extreme.

Wich option do you prefer?

I'd go with

not the brightest bulb on the marquee. Shrewd, perhaps, by no means an intellectual giant. And obviously lacking the self-knowledge to see this was just too big of a reach for someone of her modest skills.

Don't worry, I'd NEVER vote for her!

hillary is competent now

but when she was just bill's wife back in the 90's, when she was trying to initiate reforms as the wife and not an elected official.. when she was being aggressive and even supposedly overstepping her bounds - she was considered arrogant, pushy, bossy, wearing the pants (funny), and being more aggressive than her hubby....

my point is palin isn't the wife of a politician, she is the politician. she is the leader. she is the elected official. why wouldn't she be confident, self assured, ready to step to the plate when asked by McCain what she can do for her country? I heard it somewhere..

"And so, my fellow Americans, ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.

My fellow citizens of the world, ask not what America will do for you, but what together we can do for the freedom of man.

Finally, whether you are citizens of America or citizens of the world, ask of us here the same high standards of strength and sacrifice which we ask of you. With a good conscience our only sure reward, with history the final judge of our deeds, let us go forth to lead the land we love, asking His blessing and His help, but knowing that here on earth God's work must truly be our own."
JFK

And, it's interesting how he, Kennedy, can refer to God and faith back then, but when it's done by her now she's the "cocky wacko".

fact checking

i heard about them on npr yesterday...

http://www.factcheck.org/

FUCK THAT!

no way in hell is Palin qualified!
no way, no how, no mccain!
if women are realling falling for this very strategic move by mccain then Obama and the world can expect no change.
Yes yes Hillary should be there right now, getting ready to move in that bitch [the white house]...AGAIN. but shes not so we have to go with the runner up.
think about, when mccain croaks or his goider consumes his face what will we be left with. an alaskan mom who just happens to look good in a suit...
Democrats need to stop fighting over petty issues and band together so we can turn the nation around.
we are just getting ride of the WORST president in history do we really want to put the second worst in just because his running mate happens to be a woman..no

Actually, I think she's very

Actually, I think she's very qualified. She has this strange ability to make McCain look better by making him look bad: she's so vibrant and, uh, noncorpselike compared to him. But my impression is that she's gotten a load done in her time in Alaska.

I just don't agree with her at all on anything, which is a damn shame. Or am I just going easy on her because I think she's kind of a fox?

Actually, she hasn't gotten a lot done

She has focused on one thing and one thing only during her tenure as governor: oil (and gas). Getting control over those leases to benefit Alaskans, which is FINE in and of itself. Now, she's only two years into her tenure, but she hasn't even articulated any other plans, on education, healthcare, alternative energy. This troubles me because it reminds me of Bush--in the sense that she doesn't seem to have a an inherent curiosity about the world or about policy and how that can better people's lives. She is a "small thinker."

Perhaps that's good enough for Alaska, but it's not good enough for America. Not now, not at the most critical point in our history. We can do better. We MUST do better.

here here

Can I just note. Palin admitted she does not even know what the vice president does!

She knows nothing and has admitted to it - and says that she will be schooled on everything in the next 3 months. 3 months?

3 months.

All she is is eye candy...

He pulled the entertainment/ gender card.

And if it works - then he pulled it off that America women are dumb!

In the name of feminism, we must say no to Palin and no to McCain!

To be fair, I don't think

To be fair, I don't think there are very many hard and fast rules about what the VP does. I think you can backseat it if you want to, or make your voice heard. I can't even remember who the VP was with George Bush Sr....but Al Gore, well, that guy fathered the internet. Hehh.

Girlz! stop defending her...

She is not a victim (or are we falling into that stereotype of women as feeble creatures)!
She is an individual who for opportunistic reasons (because she must know she is not qualified, she is not THAT dumb) accepted to play the role of a puppet for a right ring party.

This means a lot: Not only is she against EVERYTHING women fought for by her views, but also by what she allows McCain to use her for, she also represents everything they stood against.

exactly

I would have had more respect for her if she would have said "thanks but no thanks - maybe a few years down the road".

She knows she is eye candy and was a ticket "to win" for the party. She was a foot hold to get Alaska oil, women, and the religious right who don't like McCain. not because she can do it and knows foreign politics - and what is really at stake in depth.

Her role, and her role only was to win.

And it scares me to know who is pulling her strings.

Pathetic

I know I'm being somewhat of a hypocrite, but considering she is an elected official she should know this stuff. That is pretty sad.

ITS PRETTY OBVIOUS

to see McCain's stance on women. Visit his website and under "coalitions" there is a link to the women page. You'll see nothing there - I guess that is him saying that there are no issues to address for women. If you look at Obama's website (under "people" and "women"), there are plans for women typed up on his page. He even has a downloadable "blueprint" stating his position and resolutions for women's issues! Obviously McCain is lacking support for women, if he can't even address any issues on his website. And this election should not be about two women. It should be about the American citizens and the American citizens' welfare!

The Road to 270

There are 538 Electoral College votes; it takes 270 to win.

If the election were held today, the Real Clear Politics people who average all the polls would call it for Obama as a 273 to 265 win over McCain. Here is a link to that map ...

http://www.realclearpolitics.com/epolls/maps/obama_vs_mccain/?map=10

The ten battleground states are:

Nevada
Colorado
New Mexico
Iowa
Michigan
Ohio
Pennsylvania
Florida
Virginia
New Hampshire

Real Clear Politics calls those states at this point in the race as follows ....

Obama's 6 Swing States

Colorado
New Mexico
Iowa
Michigan
Pennsylvania
New Hampshire

McCain's 4 Swing States

Nevada
Ohio
Florida
Virginia

It's important to note that 3 of McCain's swing states are big, so if he loses just one, he can't win the election. That's why the Quinnipiac Ohio poll is HUGE.

Also, at this point in the race, Obama has something of a lock on his 6 while McCain's lead is dicey in Ohio and less so in Florida and Virginia.

So at this point, the Dems are definitely not tanking. We are, in fact, winning. But, yes, we do have our work cut out for us.

The Big 10 Battleground States

Okay, I could write a huge diatribe about the Electoral College and the Hillary v. the Obama map and the Biden v. the Hillary map and the Romney v. the Pawlenty v. the Palin map.

But that's all moot.

It's September 11, 2008. It's Obama/Biden v. McCain/Palin (or McPain as we like to say.)

There are 10 battleground states in this election.

They are (roughly West to East) --

Nevada
Colorado
New Mexico
Iowa
Michigan
Ohio
Pennsylvania
Florida
Virginia
New Hampshire

If you live in or close to any of those states -- help with voter registration. Palin has secured the Republican base, but that base is shrinking while the Democratic base is growing by leaps and bounds. Pollsters have not figured out how to measure how big the Dem turnout is going to be. Let's make sure it's HUGE.

If you don't live in or close to any of those states, go to your local Dem HQ and sign up to volunteer. They will tell you how best you can help. Last night, my 16 year-old son Sam went to our local HQ and made calls to Nevada.

Thank you for the call to action

Hi Concerned Citizen (love your screen name),

Thank you for the call to action. And to that I say, "Amen!"

I must disagree, though, with your lead thesis. The Democrats are NOT tanking.

First and foremost, "tanking" sounds like we are on a downward trajectory. This is not true. We have taken a hit from the Palin effect and are now working our way back. We have the issues on our side, we actually are doing fine on fundraising, we know that Sarah Palin is unable to answer policy questions but must do that at some point, we know that she wasn't vetted and bad info comes out about her on a daily basis, we know there are 4 debates looming (3 presidential, and the one Biden/Palin.)

If we do our work, this should be the high point for the McCain campaign in the wake of the Palin distraction.

The polls now have this election basically as a tie. The Palin phenom was a huge surprise (and I'll speak more about that in a different post) but I don't think anyone who worked on the last two presidential elections is surprised that we are at a post-convention tie, because the country is truly split down the middle in its basic conception of who we are as a nation. And that big divide really comes to the fore during a presidential election.

A HUGE bit of good news today is that the Quinnipiac Ohio poll shows Obama with a 5 point lead (49 to 44). I will write more about the electoral college in a different post, but if we can swipe either Ohio or Florida from the Repubs, that's the ball game.

What we must do is get active, learn the electoral college map, and insist that the press do its job and ask Palin basic policy and process questions.

Onward into the fray,
Melanie

"A HUGE bit of good news

"A HUGE bit of good news today is that the Quinnipiac Ohio poll shows Obama with a 5 point lead (49 to 44)."

Hopefully we can control some of the vote fraud this year. In 2004 Kerry had a 7 point lead in Ohio according to the exit polls and Bush still won.

Amen

Yes. Amen to PeaceKitty. I would say we have 5 huge jobs in the next 2 months ...

1. Voter Education -- making sure we talk about issues rather than lipstick on pigs, and, more importantly, insisting that the press talk about the issues and push for real answers rather than treating this election as a freak show

2. Voter Registration -- let's explode the Democratic turnout

3. Understanding the Electoral College and where the battle really matters. Again, those 10 states are ...

Nevada
Colorado
New Mexico
Iowa
Michigan
Ohio
Pennsylvania
Florida
Virginia
New Hampshire

4. Getting out the vote

5. PROTECTING the vote. PeaceKitty is absolutely right - there is a lot of evidence that Ohio was stolen last time. One easy way to make sure your vote counts is to "vote naked" -- register to vote absentee and make sure there is a paper trail of your vote. Also, on election day, volunteer to poll watch.

Great Information!

Thank you so much for reminding me to drive over that Delaware River and into Pennsylvania. We can all "drive over" via telephone to win those battleground states. I'm going to "get naked" and vote absentee. What's the deadline for that? Good idea anyway, so we're available to help on election day.

Voting absentee in battlegrounds can help Obama

Here's why:

“We will certainly be encouraging our supporters to vote before Election Day,” a Montana spokesman for Obama says. “Each person who votes early is one less door we need to knock on, one less phone call we need to make, in the days leading up to the election. It enables us to narrow the group of people we're focusing on to get out to vote.”

It's an especially effective tool for getting younger voters and new voters to participate, Weaver says, because “they don't have to show up on just one day.”

http://missoulian.com/articles/2008/09/01/news/local/znews03.txt

Different states have different rules governing how early ballots are available, though most have at least a 30-day window. And generally you have to vote at least one day prior to the election, though clearly the earlier the better for Obama if they know they don't have to worry about you.

Let's get the word out, especially in the battlegrounds!!

Americans vote on emotion not issues

How sad but true. I thought after eight years of getting smacked over the head with a cast-iron skillet by the Bush administration Americans might actually learn from their mistakes. But no...

The question is how to inject emotion into the issues. Here's a video where journalist Tom Friedman, promoting his new book "Hot, Flat and Crowded" does exactly that, in a NON-PARTISAN way. Just the facts, man. There is an urgency to his argument that is so compelling it should be required viewing for every American. Pigs and lipstick? C'MON America! We don't have a minute to waste!

I still think that's exactly the Repubs strategy: to make it about two women, instead of every woman in this country (and man, and child). Wich would mean actually talking about a single issue of importance to them...

We will see if the sisterhood will fell for such a lame and transparent plan!
Roe vs Wade is just around the corner ladies!

LEZFAFUZ

Yeah you are right it should have been DIDN'T

Thanks.

I agree with your conclusion -

But you should have done a better job with the your first two paragraphs. For example:

On fundraising:

- Obama raised 10 million dollars in the 24 hours after Palin's convention speech
- Obamba broke his own record of 55 million dollars in August. They'll release the actual figures on Sep 20th. http://voices.washingtonpost.com/the-trail/2008/09/09/obama_broke_money_...

The polls:
- The pollsters used different methodology to determine how many Dems and Repugs to include in the post convention polls. The bump is not surprising.
- Even with suspect methodology, Obama picked up points in the West and Midwest (spell that battleground)
- McCain's bounce was anemic compared to what Bush got out of his conventions
- Focus groups are pretty clear that independent woman don't like Sarah Palin very much.
- The polls don't accurately reflect the millions of new Democrats Obama and Hillary brought in to the party

The Palin Effect
- No way she was vetted. Calls in to questions McCain's decision-making. Watch for Republicans concerned about foreign policy.
-How can you tell she's lying? Her lips are moving. The MSM is finally figuring this out and reporting on it.
- He is unable to campaign without her. Yesterday, McCain was on his own and had to cut short his solo gig because it was going so badly.
- She is more polarizing than Hillary ever was.

I voted for Hillary in the primaries, but it's time to stop trying to make everything about her.
