“May sweet equality live long and prosper!”

“May sweet equality live long and prosper!” George Takei, who played Mr. Sulu on the original Star Trek series, has finally married his partner of 21 years, Brad Altman (with Uhuru as the "best lady"). Check out the video below where the lovely couple (who didn’t ask for presents for their wedding, but instead for donations to the HRC Wedding Registry and the Japanese American National Museum) discusses with The Early Show the California proposition on the November ballot that would nullify same-sex marriages in the state.

Funnily enough, life seems to be faster than fiction since the seemingly utopian and progressive future that Star Trek portrays is decidedly hetero.

"That episode was an anomaly

"That episode was an anomaly in an otherwise homophobic show" says the link you gave... the scene is enjoyable, indeed.

Fellow Trekkie!

Hey Meffle,

I love Star Trek too. Yes, the writers may have been open about futuristic inter-species and non-normative relationship patterns, but... maybe the 24th century should have at least one human non-complex healthy gay/lesbian (and i'm not using queer here, cause I suppose those Trek relationships could be considered queer in the non-normative sense!) relationship!

Ya know? Star Trek is dealing with queerness in a relatively conservative way. Those geeks need to get over it! There is something to say for gay invisibility in a utopian future. (Starfleet's still implementing Don't Ask, Don't Tell? ;)

I agree that the original Star Trek was decidedly hetero...

...but later series in the franchise crossed (albeit not often) various sexual orientation lines. There were pan sexual and pan gender species. In one episode in TNG they directly addressed same sex relationships. It was the first time we were introduced to the Trill. A male host fell in love with Dr. Crusher. The new host was a woman. Although the love survived, Crusher could not get down with the puss so the relationship ended.

I love Star Trek.

Many happy returns to George and Brad.

There's a thin line...
