Another scandal-a-day week is behind us. I can't even scratch the surface on the financial crisis in a little wrap like this, so I won't even start. (I will say this, though, because I'm incredibly agitated: George Bush laid out a massive plan this morning to shore up the mortgage industry. It will cost taxpayers hundreds of billions of dollars. He and his cronies caused this mess, likely getting at least a little more rich along the way, and yet it's the taxpayers — who have lost their homes and businesses and life savings — who are being forced to step in and bail water. (And that makes me want to pick a fight, so stay tuned.)
This just in from the Christian Broadcasting Network via the Advocate: Barack Obama's campaign is set to launch a "Faith, Family and Values Tour" next week with a pro-Prop 8 scholar, Douglas Kmiec, as the main speaker. According to the Advocate: "Kmiec wrote an op-ed for the San Francisco Chronicle June 13, titled: 'On Same-Sex Marriage: Should California amend its Constitution? Say 'no' to the Brave New World.' Kmiec's first two sentences in the piece read, 'The California ballot initiative intended to set aside the state Supreme Court's judicial invention of same-sex marriage deserves public support. Maybe it is enough to say, as many do in conversation, that it merely re-secures a millennia of tradition and common sense.'" While it's understandable that Obama wants to lock in the moderate and progressive faith voters, Kmiec may be disappointed to know that the latest polls show 55% of California voters against Prop 8 with only 38% saying they will vote in favor.
Moving on...
Perhaps the most non-story stories was the whole Troopergate escapade... on ice. Here's how the story goes: Before Sarah Palin was chosen to be John McCain's running mate, she did an interview with Philip Gourevitch from the New Yorker in which she said “that one of her goals had been to combat alcohol abuse in rural Alaska, and she blamed Commissioner (Walt) Monegan for failing to address the problem. That, she said, was a big reason that she'd let him go — only, by her account, she didn't fire him, exactly. Rather, she asked him to drop everything else and single-mindedly take on the state's drinking problem, as the director of the Alcoholic Beverage Control Board. 'It was a job that was open, commensurate in salary pretty much — $10,000 less” — but, she added, Monegan hadn't wanted the job, so he left state service; he quit.”

This week, however, Palin's attorney contends that Monegan was fired over “outright insubordination” because of a trip to Washington D.C. “to seek funding for a new, multimillion-dollar sexual assault initiative the governor hadn't yet approved.” (Alaska has the highest sexual assault rates in the nation.) All of this begs the questions: Was he fired or not? Was he the guy to take on a major state problem or was he a renegade? In addition to these inconsistencies, Palin also initially agreed to cooperate with the investigation and is now refusing, and the McCain campaign is trying to get the whole thing thrown out, at least until after the election. On top of that, Alaska's Attorney General is not letting the 12 subpoenaed state employees testify and Todd Palin, witness number 13 and the man some are calling Alaska's 'shadow governor', is also ignoring his subpoena. What coulda/shoulda/woulda been a non-starter, local story and family dispute has now become an international scandal that seems to indicate that the Palins have something to hide.
McCain is still rolling out false ads that fail to pass the Fact Checkers. According to the Washington Post, the latest is an attempt to tie Barack Obama “to Franklin Raines, the former CEO of the bankrupt mortgage giant, Fannie Mae, who also happens to be African-American.” The Post tracks the rumors back to a single conversation at a photo shoot between a Style section reporter and Raines. The Obama camp, Raines and the reporter in question all deny the link that McCain is making in the ad.
On the international front, China is in the middle of a tainted milk crisis which is enveloping baby formula and liquid milk. According to the AP, “Tainted baby formula has been blamed for killing four infants and sickening 6,200 in China since the scandal broke last week. Some 1,300 babies, mostly newborns, are currently in hospitals and 158 of them are suffering from acute kidney failure.” Sales and imports of all milk and dairy products have been suspended.

What is your real motivation?
Why do you say these outrageous things that go against all common sense? Where are you REALLY coming from?
why don't you show your real colors? Because you couldn't possibly believe all that non sense.
Can't you see these are very serious times?
And in other news...
On August 15, 2008, Shanniel Hyatt was cleared this week in a British Court for the murder of Kellie Telesford. The jury cleared Hyatt of first degree murder, as well as manslaughter. Telesford was found strangled in her home. Police CCTV shows Hyatt entering Telesford's home with her three days before her body was found, and exiting the home several hours later. No one else is seen entering or leaving since. Hyatt was also found with various electronics and a transit pass, all belonging to Telesford. Prosecutors believed Hyatt murdered Telesford in a fit of rage, after discovering Telesford was a pre-operative transsexual while engaged in sexual activity. The defense suggested that Telesford died from autoerotic asphyxiation or from suicide. The murder, committed November 18, 2007, now remains unsolved. Hyatt is being held still for immigration reasons.
Meanwhile, 23-year-old Victoria Arellano, an HIV-positive transgender Mexican immigrant, spent two months succumbing to infections in a US immigration detention center. She did not get to see a doctor and was not given the appropriate medicine. Her mother, Olga Arellano, and fellow inmates begged for help after Victoria started vomiting blood in their holding cell, where 105 detainees were crammed onto bunks and mattresses in a space designed for 40. However, the pleas were to no avail and Victoria Arellano died, chained to a hospital bed, three days later. ICE officials have refused comment, citing the family's filing of a wrongful death lawsuit. Arellano died in the Summer of 2007, but the story broke a few days ago when the family filed suit.
And in Greeley, CO yesterday, Allen Andrade went before the judge to have his charges reduced or dismissed in the death of Angie Zapata. Defense attorney Annette Kundelius, argued there was no deliberate intent to harm Zapata by Andrade when he invaded her home, went through her personal papers, and then later picked up a fire extinguisher and struck Zapata with it several times to the head, killing her. The attorney also argued that at best this was nothing more than a "heat of passion" crime, and that Andrade's statements to police calling Zapata an "it" and to his girlfriend claiming all gays should die do not constitute an anti-gay or anti-transgender bias. The judge was not impressed, and ordered Andrade be tried on first degree murder and other charges, as well as let stand the hate bias charge. Further, Judge Marcelo Kopcow refused to grant bail, citing the brutal nature of the crime and the capital charge against Andrade.
Just a bit of what passes through my email box each week.

Thanks for passing these along
CA_MEDICINE_WOMAN, Thanks! So many people are unaware of the bias against this community even in legal venues.
You're just a little drop of sunshine!
I posted a headline about the Zapata case yesterday where the guy said 'all gay things should die' or something like that. Hadn't seen those other two cases before. What are your sources of info? I need to be looped.
I'm a bit more invested in tracking this stuff
For safety reasons, I started keeping track of crimes targeting the TG community some time ago. I was faced with a choice, either let it rot inside me, or speak out periodically.
The Telesford case has been in the British media for a while, especially the BBC (have to get that one online, isn't covered on BBC World News, since it's a local issue to them). The Zapata case is in the Denver area press, and is considered by some a test case for the new hate crimes legislation. The Arellano case I got twigged to by an email.
The Telesford case I normally woudn't mention, given the sheer volume of crimes targeting TG's here in the good old US, but the insanity of the verdict really set me off.
On the upside...
I just learned that a former US Army officer who underwent a gender reassignment surgery was discriminated against by the U.S. government, a federal judge ruled today. This is an important victory for the transgender community. which is often the target bias in the workplace. Diane Schroer won her federal lawsuit against the Library of Congress after officials backed out of a 2005 job offer when told of her intention to become undergo GRS. At the time of the job interview for a position as a senior terrorism research analyst, Diane Schoer lived as David Schroer, a male. Schoer had been a US Army Special Forces officer.
I look forward to when I can rejoice more in the victories than become outraged by the atrocities that happen to those like myself.

I just read that she won,
I just read that she won, over on CNN, and was elated :)
Just because the trans community isn't covered under the discrimination act does not mean it is ok! And I hope this will push for inclusion to happen. I'm just glad Diane stood and did not bend over.

Case may go to US Supreme Court
Rumor and media buzz is that there may be an appeal of the decision to the US Supreme Court, which has historically ruled against the TG community and individuals on nearly every level.
In a society where everything not spelled out in writing is okay, often ignored is the fact that the US Constitution clearly states that any powers not given the government do not exist, while any rights not denied to the individual are in full force. Today, the opposite exists, and institutional discrimination by the government against groups not specifically outlined as protected is considered okay.
While a person should be judged by relevant standards when it comes to education, health care, housing, employment, etc., increasingly such standards are cast aside in favor of the irrelevant. Schoer ran right into that reality in the workplace. Having been found the most fully qualified based upon skills, education, and experience, she was denied the job based upon something completely irrelevant, thereby hurting our national security based solely upon bigotry and intolerance.
What makes the Schoer case interesting to me is the fact that she could have easily gone to any of the new security oriented non-governmental private corporation, and made a tidy fortune for herself. Instead, she chose to serve her nation, at a significantly lower pay scale, because that is what she has dedicated her life to. I love when the battles are won based upon principle, and not fought for the money.

This is awful
"Some 1,300 babies, mostly newborns, are currently in hospitals and 158 of them are suffering from acute kidney failure." RIP four little ones.
Jodie
Yes, it is....
I was reading about it in the International Herald Tribune. They're also saying it's possible they ignored/covered up the problem until after the Olympics were over, to avoid detracting attention from the Beijing games....
Tiffanya84
That is so fucking disgusting. Jodie
It certainly is, but unfortunately is not that surprising....
considering the fact that it comes from a government that loves to control EVERYTHING and around 68 crimes can get someone the death penalty, including all sorts of crimes from tax evasion to murder.
And don't even get me started on what the government did to help spread the AIDS epidemic in the most populous nation on the planet. Oh, sure, let's vaccinate everyone in rural communities, but why not save time and let whole villages share a few needles? INSANITY.
Deja Vu
Why is McCain always trying to use his power and influence to bail out the women in his life? First, he had to get Cindy off the hook for her drug addiction. And now he's trying to bail out Sarah Palin to keep her from getting busted in Troopergate.
Maybe that's why he has women around him. All you need to do is look at what he did to his first wife to know he's a bastard. So the women only get near him when they want to use him to fix their problems with his spin machine. And that's just upsetting on a few too many levels.
maybe he's a wounded little kitten
attracted to other wounded little kittens.

I was actually researching socially responsible Canadian stocks and mutual funds the other day. I also need to study up on the government and all, but I'm there in my heart.
I hear you!! I'm doing my research...just in case...
For the first time in my life, I'm actually serious about moving out of the country....that's sad to me....We need to encourage people to look at the issues and VOTE!
