Recently it was announced that Ellen DeGeneres will be the new face of CoverGirl Cosmetics.
Am I the only one devastated by this news? Can’t there be at least one lesbian who doesn’t have to be pretty in order to make it big?
Ellen is a lesbian’s lesbian — someone who brings soft butch to the mainstream masses. Take her wardrobe for example: I call it Lesbian Casual — button-up shirt, perhaps a blazer or sweater vest, men’s jeans and a pair of hip sneakers. She wore a tuxedo to host the Oscars for Christ’s sake! It was hot. It made those who don’t wear dresses a bit more comfortable rockin a suit and tie to their cousin’s wedding or a tux to the prom.

Similar to Rachel Maddow’s transformation — who’s gone from looking like The Politically Aware Activist Dyke Who Turned You Out in College to The Straight Roommate Who Everyone Thought Was Gay but Only Because She Had Short Hair — Ellen seems to be following the rule that as your fame increases, so does the size of your makeup bag. At the same time as the Academy Awards, Ellen was all femmed-out on the cover of W magazine, wearing an aquamarine bra that made her aquamarine eyes pop. You know how when you find high school pictures of your masculine-identified partner because you were snooping in her childhood bedroom, and in them she has long, flowing hair and is wearing a skirt and it makes you really uncomfortable and a little sick to your stomach? That’s how I felt seeing this photo of Ellen.

Bring Sexy Back, Ellen
Ellen is so hot but this pic IS so awkward, stay true to the sneakers and button up shirts that are you, Ellen! haha :)
i never noticed how pretty
i never noticed how pretty ellen's eyes are. shoulda been wearing a shirt that color, some jeans, and that same color kicks..that woulda been better than her lookin all....girly. lol

Now, don't get me wrong...
...I love Ellen no matter what. But that W cover was just too much. She never ever dresses like that...it makes me sad to see her change herself like that...
Stay true
Kuddos for pointing out the big elephant in the room. The issue with Ellen and Rachel is not about butch or femme roles, or the person deciding to suddenly femme it up. It is more about how it is disheartening to find that somehow these women are not staying true to who they are due to media or network pressures. Both of them have stated that they dislike makeup and are not ones to show cleavage and such, but now that they have a gained media attention they suddenly are conforming to a more popular ideal of beauty.
Many queers and their straight allies look up to these women for being out despite pressures that would try to persuade them otherwise. I myself love to see positive roles models for our community. However, it is clearly evident that their image is being changed in order to make them more approachable to the public. Instead of helping the public redefine their idea of beauty, we find it easier to change the image of these women. I find that soft butch Ellen, decked out in a suit, hip sneakers and minimal makeup is way more true to herself than wearing a turquoise bra. Many lesbians would agree, they fantasize about the Ellen that rocked it and refused to succumb to the media.

DAMN Rachel Maddow looked good before "the makeover".
.fin.
I seem to remember Ellen
I seem to remember Ellen saying in interviews (on more than one occasion) that she hates wearing make-up. She's acknowledged she has had to wear it on set, and immediately after shooting, she wipes it off. The thing that makes me kinda scratch my head about the CoverGirl contract is not that there is any kind of de-dykeing going on with her, it is the fact that she has said she hates wearing the stuff, but she is going to promote it.
clothes
i think clothes and make-ups are just like names you know?
some lesbians have very femme names
can you blame them for that?
it's not like everybody is shane!
traitor by name.
my name is traitor!
the important thing is the spirit
soft butch, clothes.
mmm

This is random ...
but I remember when I started out in my first job (a stockbroking firm) that I was advised not to wear RED as it was shown to aggravate female colleagues! This was in 1994!
Lest we forget there was a time when female office workers were only 'allowed' to wear skirts ... *shudders*.
Thank Christ we don't live with those stupid rules anymore!
I was personally surprised when I heard about Ellen. It was a bold move on the part of CoverGirl. Companies are finally realising where there is untapped money to be made (I think after the DOVE campaign).
If Ellen wants to show some cleavage - I don't have a problem with that.
Maybe Rachel Maddow evolved her own 'look'. Why do we assume she is being 'made' to change? Lesbian's get bored with their appearance the same as everyone else!
When I was 11, I had a mullet - thank god I saw the light!

i can agree with this... funny enough, when I was "straight" (or at least, everyone thought I was), I was really boyish. Especially in my college years; the short hair, baggy clothes, no makeup, sometimes a baseball cap... Now that I've admitted to being gay, I'm a lot more girly than I ever was. Painted nails, long hair, occasional make-up, figure-flattering clothing. I just got tired of the old look and wanted something new. I'm attracted to girls who are more feminine (though androgyny is really hot, too), and I think I just wanted to try to look that way myself. I think it's been fun making the transformation, and the comments people make about it are always really flattering and tend to give me a much needed stroke to the ego once in a while!
Defined by orientation?
Ellen is getting older, let her feel good by being a Covergirl lady. It'll probably do good for her self-esteem. I mean, look at her wife. She's got to feel kind of intimidated that she has a younger and hotter woman for a wife.
Let the woman breathe. And hey, I think we are pushing stereotypes just a hell of a lot. Why must it always been the uber butch lesbian with the buzzcut. Let tv world see that lesbians aren't all uber butchy and putting socks in their pants.
Ellen Degeneres looks damn good for her age, and its refreshing to hear that she is letting herself feel beautiful.
At the end of the day, she isn't the lesbian who has a talk show and is a soft butch.
She is a woman, that has a talk show, who just so happens to be a lesbian and wear softer masculin clothing.
not necessarily
"She's got to feel kind of intimidated that she has a younger and hotter woman for a wife."
She could feel like she's a badass for having hot wife - and maybe it's possible that Portia could feel intimidated by Ellen's success. Try putting the shoe on the other foot.
Just because an older woman has younger gf or wife doesn't mean the older is intimidated, trust me ;) I'm in a similar situation.
Agreed
That could very well be the case. haha. *nods*
I guess I more so thought that because apparently Ellen's friends have spoken about how she kind of feels insecure about it. *shrugs*
You are probably right. haha.
ah, didn't know that..
i should read the tabloids more... ;)
i love ellen..
I don't think there would be ever a lesbian that can represent what all lesbians are, is just that us girls are so freaking different. I don't know why many lesbians and as a matter of fact many people thinks that you need to be butchy to be a lesbian. IS JUST NOT THE WAY IT IS.. Judging if someone wears more makeup or changes their look is just a close minded way of thinking.. come on, everyone changes!!! I still remember when I was in high school and I used to wear guys jeans and shirts! and now, believe me.. things have changed!..
i love ellen too
You are so right about there not ever being a lesbian that can represent all of us!
As a femme, I obviously don't feel that "you need to be butchy to be a lesbian"!
Again, my point is just that if someone is usually more masculine in their day-to-day living and that's how they feel comfortable, then no-one should be forcing them to change just for the sake of ratings, money, etc. Lesbians shouldn't have to look a certain way (ie "pretty") to be on TV.
we all love ellen..
yeah i agree with you.. but at the end we dont know if its their choice or not..
for example, my uni graduation is coming, and my girlfriend is coming for those dates and she asked me if i wanted her to use a dress.. hell no! we need to wear whatever is comfortable for us and represent us..
anyways, i think you have a good point there, i hope the "pressure" of being all dolled up to be some sort of celebrity changes.. we need to be who we are no matter the raitings or money..
Why is being a Lesbian
different then being a woman or a man and looking different on TV? I don't think the likes of, for a ready example, Jennifer Beals walks around in smart designer clothes all the time, but when she is on the read carpet or interviewing she does.
Is this forsaking a part of who she is in order to fulfill the role, or is this her putting forward a particular look as her job encourages her too?
It's about a job, not about conforming or recreating sexual identities.

"OUT" is IN!
I think that we first should be happy with the fact that Ellen's face will be represented and not Sarah Palin's. Change comes slowly. We should be happy, but not satisfied, with what’s occurring. Even though Ellen does not represent all lesbian looks/identities, I think it’s great that someone who is "out" has been chosen to be the face of a major cosmetic brand. People are afraid of what they don’t understand - yet fascinated! They're unsure if they agree or disagree with homosexuality or anything queer, but when the wedding photos of Ellen & Portia's wedding were printed I’m sure these same people bought the issue "hot off the press!" Look at the visibility of Lilo and Ronson - the public kiss in Cannes. Visibility of LGBT folks is important. It shows that we are here and are not going to go away any time soon. I think we should focus on all of the positives and look forward to our next Out & fabulous LGBT pioneer!

Flash back to gym class
When one of the gym teachers - the butchest woman I've ever met - warned me to "femme it up." It was one of the few times in my life I exercised appropriate self restraint and I did not laugh in her face.
TV Rachel looks very different from other Rachel. I don't have a problem with her doing what she needs to for the sake of her career, but I am pissed off if MSNBC is pressuring her to do it.

I have some problems with
I have some problems with this post and the comments-
1. Ellen's a big enough name that she can do whatever she wants. Clearly, she wants to be the new face of Cover Girl or she wouldn't have accepted their offer. I bet she probably thinks it's great not just because she doesn't fit the standard ideas of beauty but also because she's 50. Fifty and a Cover Girl. As women we should all be thrilled about that- gay or not.
2. I think it's ridiculous that we're talking about butch/femme in the 21st century. It's not the 1950's anymore. We can all just be women. Women who love women who don't have to fit into assigned roles.
3. Ellen's a woman. We're lesbians. Shouldn't we be happy to see her boobs? I'm just sayin'.
4. It's been said before. It's worth repeating. If you're on TV, you wear makeup. Period. Ellen and Rachel have both been made up, airbrushed and dressed by people paid to do that for years.
5. What was wrong with Ellen's wedding outfit? It wasn't great, but it was okay. I was much more bothered by the fact that they never kissed in the video. That annoyed me and stood out as a glaring omission.
YUCK - RobinR
#2. exactly - it's the 21st century...not the 1950s. which means that we have fought long and hard to have genders that are valid and that we're not afraid to label ourselves as. i am a FEMME!!! hardcore. power bottom. foxy as hell. and with a fat ass to boot. and you know what...i like butches and other masculine identified women. with tattoos. with buzzed salt & pepper heads. with strong arms and t-shirts rolled up.
please don't attempt to take that away from me. we are not trying to label you and/or take your chosen label away.
boring.
I'm not trying to take
I'm not trying to take anything away from anybody, I just think defined gender roles is an old-fashioned idea that has no place in 2008. My opinion. Agree or disagree, but no need to engage in personal attacks.
FYI, no one who knows me thinks that I'm boring. Don't want to take my word for it, ask Julia (Watson, OurChart Blogger).
oh - i didn't mean that you
oh - i didn't mean that you were boring...sorry about that. i was just saying "boring" as in i hate having to defend my gender all of the time.
no disrespect meant. we can agree to disagree.
Nope
Nope, I am not happy to see Ellen's boobs. Not in this context, anyway. Maybe if they were live in my bedroom...just saying (apologies to Portia).

"The Politically Aware Activist Dyke Who Turned You Out in College to The Straight Roommate Who Everyone Thought Was Gay but Only Because She Had Short Hair" Haha!
I suppose I'm straddling the fence on your entry. Part of it is that I love Ellen and Rachel and it doesn't really matter to me whether they're femming it up or marching onto set in combat boots. I think they're sexy either way...but I totally see what you're saying about wanting them to be able to be as butch as they want to be on TV. I think it would be amazing if butch women could fully realize their personalities and styles on TV/in general. However, I'm just really excited that these out lesbians are having such successful careers in today's homophobic climate...and if that means that their producers are telling them to put on a little makeup and wear pink...well, one step at a time.
Thanks for the post!
Thanks for the comment! You
Thanks for the comment!
You are right that while we continue to struggle for acceptance, we must acknowledge the strides that have been made. One example that comes to mind is how people often complain about Will and Grace being so mainstream/stereotyical/sex-less, etc...but we must step back and see how f'en amazing it is to even have a successful, long-running show about gay men on prime-time television in the first place. Change happens slowly, but that doesn't mean we shouldn't keep fighting.
Do we know?
You know, I love Ellen. Not like lust, but really as the person I would love to be, if I weren't going to be my wonderful self. OK, I know that's leaving myself open, especially given the current back and forth on another blog; Have fun with it. I love that girl next door, casual, comfortable in her skin thing she's got going on. I will also admit surprise at the wedding garb. I'm just not sure she's doing it for the makeup gig. I hope not, but even if she were, can we fault her for making a decision based on something other than lesbian power? Thing is, I have seen friends react wardrobe-weirdly to new girlfriends and new wives. I even have an inexplicable pair of peek-toe-pumps myself. Whatever it is, Ellen is Ellen and she's got respect. Taem?
I'm calling for a halt to
I'm calling for a halt to the Butches with Smoky Eye trend! okthxbai.
What's the problem?
Why lesbians who wears dresses and makeup are less lesbian than the ones that do not? I mean....that doesn’t make any sense.....In my opinion I think it's great that Ellen is the new image of CoverGirl especially for those lesbians teens who buy magazines, now they can have a representation!! The important issue here is not the image or the makeup...people need to stop stereotypes.... It makes me uncomfortable and a little sick to my stomach too…
This is so true! Ellen has
This is so true! Ellen has worked long and hard to get to this point in her career. She has faced a lot of discrimination and just when she has the straightest people out there eating out of her hand, they try to make her "one of them." I don't know that it's intentional, maybe they just don't get that not every woman is femme or wants to feel pretty. I know that for me, nothing is nicer than watching Ellen dance around in her hot suits, vests and ties. As for Rachel, I just saw her for the first time the other night and I instantly knew she was gay. I also instantly noticed the makeup and the hair, in fact my friends and I were sort of making fun of it because it doesn't look right, just like Ellen in with her boob hanging out. It's obvious that we still have a ways to go with being correctly represented in the media. This is precisely why I don't like The L Word, where are all the dykes? As I recall Shane doesn't leave the house without her eyeliner and hair gel. I'm not saying that lesbians can't be femme, I'm just saying not all lesbians are femme. Some are raging bull dykes and those are the ones society still doesn't feel comfortable with
i find ellen okay..
i find it okay seeing Ellen in very dykey clothes or a bit feminine like that in aquamarine bra..
i basically love lesbians who doesn't show-off they're strong on the outside..i love it when they dress up girly too, i love it when despite fragility i see outside, i know they're strong inside..that's what matters more to me.. =)

ALL
I like all looks depending on the person. I do have to admit though that Ellen is my clothing hero. I have vowed to never wear a dress again, a la DeGeneres. If she can pull it off with all the fancy things she does I can too. Unfortunately when I get dressed up in a dress it isn't pretty.(I just don't have the frilly gene I guess)
Karen :)
http://pawsiblegaytails.blogspot.com/
I agree
the person makes the looks. Plus now that I'm sporting 3 nasty scars from a recent leg and ankle break- dresses nor skirts are in my plans in the next few years! I had the frilly gene but somehow it became less important then me walking again. So I adore Ellens fashion sense and am learning a ton from it! As Hillary Clinton said" The Sisterhood of the Traveling Pantsuit" we rock the world now!
BRAVA!!!
oh, Amy Miller, i like you already
what femme gal doesn't like a little butch eye candy now and again. while i applaud Covergirl for chosing icons that don't fit the typical model ----- i would love to see Ellen stay on the butcher side of the spectrum. then again, how about seeing a good butch/femme shot on the Covergirl ads. dizAMN!!! now that would be hot.
Agreed
I agree that we should support a range of gender expressions - including wanting to express in different ways on different days - but as someone who finds butch/masculine presenting women to be Capital-H-Hot, I also wish a girl could get a little pop culture eye candy. There's nothing wrong with lesbians making bank and I'm glad to see Cover Girl reaching out to a range of women, but there is ZERO butch representation out there - I'm not trying to police how people look and dress, but I am telling you: Nothing makes me drool like a muscle T, short hair, a few tatoos, and having to look twice to tell whether you're looking at a "girl" or a "boy." I'd see THAT movie or TV show twice!
That first picture...
I have nothing constructive to say. That first picture of Rachel Maddow is so hot.
my thoughts exactly.
my thoughts exactly.
I respect butch women and I
I respect butch women and I understand the writers complaint even though I call myself a balanced lesbian..part femme and maybe ever so slightest touch of masculinity. Anyway, I think its great that shes in commercials simply because lesbians need to be mainstream. I understand that your afraid that the image shes putting off is that lesbians wear makeup, but frankly some lesbians DO wear makeup and since Ellen is the only one out there representing us, its important, I think that the world see that lesbians arent just all butch, because thats what straight people think being a lesbian is-a woman whose butchy that beats up a man and straps it on.
Theres a lot more to being a lesbian than that. Oh and call me crazy but isnt soft butch someone who does wear a little makeup like eye makeup? i knew a woman who called herself that and she wore eye makeup
What's the problem, really?
Ellen didn't have to femme it up to become a super-celeb. Sheh IS a super-celeb. She may just be having fun with that status and playing with her own notions of gender. Have you seen her show lately? To me, she looks as butchy as she ever has and, some days, even more so...she is heavy into ties. EVERYONE on TV wears a pound of make-up, so cosmetic bags are probably as big for the guys as for the dykes.
About Rachel, she needs to lose the false eyelashes. They're a little distracting because I can almost imagine one peeling up on the corner and popping right off of her eyelid just as she's being relevant and smart.
When I generalize the gender-identity issues you raise in your blog, I could see it as trans-phobic. If a man is transitioning to being a woman and looks odd in a dress and make-up, could that nausea-like uneasiness be an excuse for people who perpetrate hate crimes? I hope we can check our reactions to these things and be aware of what they tell us about ourselves.

Hi!
Thanks for your comment.
I really hope nothing I said came off as trans phobic or trans misogynist because I am a trans ally and would never ever ever mean to come across as otherwise.
I do not feel uneasy about anyone's expression of gender in a serious way-I was being very tongue-in-cheek and talking specifically about Ellen and Rachel. I respect and admire everyone's expression of any gender identity!!!

Hope that makes sense
