My Palin Pain

I can't make fun of Sarah Palin any more. It's too painful. I just feel sorry for her. John McCain, in some dumb maverick last minute decision, plucked her out of nowhere and threw her into the most insane campaign circus ever. And well, I realize that a VP candidate should be able to handle questions about foreign policy, but I don't think Palin ever had plans to run for VP. She just wanted to sit in her office amongst all the carcasses of dead animals she killed and look out her back window at Russia.

Three weeks ago she was getting referred to as "charming."  Now even her defenders are cringing. I kind of just want the election to be over so I don't have to watch any more interviews with her. Her Katie Couric interview just hurts. It hurts to watch. When pressed on her comment about Alaska's proximity to Russia as an example of her foreign policy experience, poor Palin rambles on about how Russia is close to Alaska and at one point actually says, "I don't know, you know?"

And here are some sweetly stupid answers to some pretty run of the mill questions reporters asked her today. Keep in mind this is the first time reporters have even been allowed to go near her. The McCain campaign apparently wanted to save her virginity until they were married in the White House.

The sad thing is, it's just not funny any more. It's not captivating, it's not infuriating... it's just embarrassing. Please, please just let her go back to Alaska so she can resume killing bears and firing people.

Embarrassed for her....but not sorry

for her. I initially felt the way you did, that she didn't ask for this and got thrown in the deep end and was just trying to keep her head above water. But then I read the following in the NYTimes:

Laura Chase, the campaign manager during Ms. Palin’s first run for mayor in 1996, recalled the night the two women chatted about her ambitions.

“I said, ‘You know, Sarah, within 10 years you could be governor,’ ” Ms. Chase recalled. “She replied, ‘I want to be president.'"

The rest of the profile was pretty eye-opening as well and showed a pattern of secrecy and bullying in her governing style. She seems to be charming only in the way that "Mean Girls" are:

So while I admit it is PAINFUL to watch her comeuppance, I feel very little sympathy.

(sorry)

yeah, well guess what Obama has been gunning for...

...his entire career!

“She replied, ‘I want to be president.'"

I guess it's ok for a guy but women aren't supposed to have this kind of ambition.

My sentiments exactly.

I just had this argument with someone last night. After watching that interview with Katie Couric, I couldn't help but just feel embarrassed for her. As disgusting a person I think she is, I don't think she ever in a million years thought she'd have to explain her selfish/ far-fetched views to the entire world.

Hopefully, she doesn't have to do this for another 4 years...

thank you for that

I am sick and tired of Sarah Palin too. She is exacerbating this entire campaign process, and she fails to recognize that she is simply not qualified to run for vice president. I can't wait for all of this crap to be over.
One scary thing that I have noticed is that ever since Palin became McCain's running mate, there has been almost no press (at least, not nearly as much as there used to be)for Obama. In a country where publicity is important, and there is no such thing as "bad" publicity, I fear that a lot of people will not remember Obama and Biden. Granted, there is still time, and Obama has a lot of support, but it is indeed a scary thought.
And sorry for being so depressing! It's just that Palin makes me that way...

I really hope that the rest

I really hope that the rest of the United States (aka the Republicans) saw the interview between and Couric and Palin. It revealed a lot. This woman is by no means capable of leading a nation. She is greatly uneducated in the area foreign policy, and that terrifies me. I just truly hope that the majority of Americans that will be voting can forget about the charm she once held, and see how this person is even more inexperienced than Obama. Americans cannot view her as just the possibility of our future Vice President, they need to view her as the possibility of being our President one day. That is a day I wish will never come.

Amen

Dear Diana,

I actually just signed on to post the exact same sentiment. I will fight Sarah Palin no more forever. McCain's VP choice was the most egregious case of political pandering in the history of US politics (and that's going some.) The leader of Sarah Palin's party came to her and said, "We need you" and she answered the call. This should not reflect badly on Sarah Palin - she is who she is, and she isn't who she isn't. But it can, should, must and will reflect horribly on John McCain's decision making.

The whole "experience myth" is absurd -- it isn't the case that the most experienced person should become president. If it was that easy, we could just give a Civil Service exam and the person who scores highest would become President. But there is a threshold of experience and knowledge needed to become President - and no one in their right mind could ever have thought Sarah Palin crossed that threshold. It was just insanity, and I, like you, am SO ready for the insanity to be over.

So I am not going to make fun of Sarah Palin anymore. I'm going to just keep repeating the mantra: What on Earth is John McCain thinking?

Onward Into The Fray,

Hi, Melanie

What you said about her is why she should NEVER have accepted, which makes me think she is an egomaniac. Jodie

Yeah but...

I do not think she is THAT innocent. And I also think she should not be underestimated in some missplaced pity.

Remember her actions as governor (the firing, the nepotism, the rape kits etc). She is no delicate, simple minded flower and should be denounced. Nobody forced her to put herself in this kind of situation.
