Okay, so this is problematic on so many levels — I'm not sure where to begin.
Tyra Banks, on her show, featured a couple of female "barsexuals," straight (straight?) women who kiss each other at bars to gain attention from men. Tyra's whole stance strikes me as sexist and homophobic. Why the assumption that these women are straight? (Maybe they identify that way, maybe not. But when you feel "sexy" kissing another woman, that could be attributed to the fact that you're... you know, kissing another woman, and you know, that just might turn you on!)
Why does a girl-on-girl make-out session make women seem "easy?" Why can't sexual desire for another woman just be that and not an act for the male gaze? Regardless, even their exhibitionist tendencies (that could be their personal kink... who knows, whatevs) could totally have nothing to do with those dudes' dicks.
Step out of the hetero shell, Tyra, you know you just want some lady lovin' of your own. The men in this clip may or may not be sexist jerks, but they're the only ones who are straightforward and clear about their desires. See this clip.

So, the kiss each other to
pick up guys... big deal.
Some people have their cleavage all out to pick up.
Others lie.
Some where perfume and put on a fake accent.
Some pay for it.
Some where no clothes and too much make-up.
Some have plastic surgery.
Really, are we really going to be upset at some girls messin' around? This kind of behaviour hurts no one but themselves, and I just hope before they put themseleves into a position with the wrong guy that they figure out they aren't attracting winners.
I don't kiss guys are gals to pick up someone else, but I haven't attracted a winner yet either. I'm just not seeing the big deal, but obviously Tyra with her fake sincerity does.
Don't get me wrong, these girls have a self-esteem problem, but I don't see how addressing it on the show is going to help them - if anything it might help them pick up more...
Finally Tyra Addresses Something (kinda) Right!
I didn't actually see this episode of the Tyra Banks show, but I have to say from what this article was about, I actually agree with Tyra's point of view and what seems to be her message. All too often, when men hear the word "lesbian" or "bisexual", they somehow see themselves in the middle of women's sexual interactions, when in fact the last thing I want is a nasty hairy penis in my way lol! So i hate this whole "let's kiss to turn the boys on" fad that seems to be running rampant, regardless of these girls' sexual identities, and I am glad tyra addressed it!
I've given up watching anything that has Tyra in it! ...
I find she always dances around the real issue, especially with topics like this.
Like Oprah, when the issue revolves around a 'lesbian' subject - she 'plays dumb' - as if she is surprised, like she is only hearing of such things for the first time!
When we know both of these women are more clued up than that.
Tyra's Point - Empowering Women
The show was not about straight girls who go to bars and make out with other girls -- and how they are really closet homosexuals. Maybe that will be the topic for another show. This show was about Tyra trying to get through to girls on how this behavior is degrading. I'm glad Tyra addressed this issue. And I think she got it right.
aside from the sheer idiocy of this show
my inner monologue at age 16:
"oh man. please dare us to make out. come, on bottle. i'll just pretend that i don't like it. maybe she'll dig me after. a little more to the left. keep spinning...
shit, not again."
*kisses tim/john/tony/brian/etc.*
Sarah :)
Haaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa! FUNNY. Jodie
It's what they do in order
It's what they do in order to "get laid" - to attract.
Eventually they will learn. Right now they are just exploring - and doing what apparently works for them. Eventually they will learn.
Guys thought this was hot waaaay before this became chic. So all they are doing is monopolizing on this fact.
ps, who watches Tyra?
rovermom :)
Life is a 3D puzzle and everyone has a piece!

this is laughable
"I'm not... like, not straight."
well phewf! it's kinda funny to me that the prevailing attitude seems to be that it's preferable for girls to kiss eachother to get male attention (and be "skanky") than to kiss eachother because they might actually be queer.
and i am entertained that the 20-somethings alluded to making out with eachother in bars as a "lifestyle choice" without even a hint of irony.
Omg
Tyra is so in denial, or is she ...she just hasn't met the right woman to dominate her fierce ass yet. *tv can be so lame* Jodie
hahahaha!! geez, i wish i
hahahaha!! geez, i wish i was the "right" woman for her!!! lol
Haha amen!
Haha amen!
When I was in high school
guys used to try and convince my best friend and I to kiss (we never did by the way). Turns out she's bi and I'm gay, but that's beside the point.
I've met LOADS of girls who make-out for attention. I went to a university that was typically 60-70% female and a lot of girls would do a lot to get attention from the male minority. Being a liberal university, fewer people had issues with homosexuality (almost no one I met, anyway) and most of these girls had no problem defining themselves as bisexual.
The problem there was that if you actually spoke to them about it, and asked them if they'd ever have sex with a woman, the general response was, "no, I want to feel something." Well, then, sweetheart, if you don't feel anything when you're with a woman, you're most definitely not biSEXual.
The whole "I kissed a girl" thing is really getting out of hand. I don't fit your typical stereotype either, and have on many occasions found that looking intimate with another girl is not only NOT a deterrent for most younger guys, but frequently serves as encouragement. I've actually been hit on by men while inside a LESBIAN bar. I was soooo pissed off....
Shit...........
No self esteem. It breaks my heart.
You know...
this has been of day of OMG's, WTF's, you've got to be kidding, get out of my space, stay out of my cube, and back off. I should not have read this blog or watched the video's!
Peace and love!
wow...ummm
Where are the parents of a 15 year old girl who kisses other girls on a schoolbus for a bunch of guys then books her on TYRA?
So much wrong in the world
"more more more..how do you like it?"
Exactly...
I cannot believe that a parent would ok her 15 year old daughter to present herself the way this young lady did. I don't have children so maybe I am wrong. But, to listen to that girl talk with such self-disrespect and laugh about it, is disgusting. To admit she did it because the boys on the bus told her it was "cool", was so self degrading to that girl and her friend, I was amazed. The boys just want a reason to get their cheap thrills and a stupid stupid young girl just played along.
"So much wrong in the world" is a good statment, but what is disturbng is that it just keeps becoming more wrong in the world.
Peace and love!
I would like to see legislation
that prevents teens up to age 18 from being on programs like this for this purpose. For years now daytime talk has exploited these teens like pimps. How many pregnant teens has Maury put up in some cheap hotel so they can tell the world how poorly raised they were? It's all under the guise of "educating" the public. But we know no real good comes from these shows. Like your last statement Lucia, it's all just becoming the norm and that really bodes poorly for us.
"more more more..how do you like it?"
Thickpump et al, is it just me?
What about all these children people are bringing to these political rallies, wtf? As nasty as they get at the mccainpalin shindigs, why would you bring your child to that? Then again, I can't believe people bring their children to "mature" movies a lot of times.
BREEDING, IT'S NOT FOR EVERYONE. Jodie
funny you should mention that
Just look at these Darwin superstars...

The one woman with the big eyes who wont go away is fast becoming the typical Palin supporter. Soledad Obrien interview a similar blank/shark eyed woman after the debate.
Basically her head is a bird feeder. Only not as useful.
"more more more..how do you like it?"
i know what you mean
i just handed in a 'light' essay for my class that i thought was 2000words but i just found it was actually 3000words...i was like WTF?
I don't really see Tyra as
I don't really see Tyra as assuming anything about their sexualities. Both sets of guests made it clear that what they were doing was for the attention they get from guys. Maybe they are gay but it doesn't mean Tyra is being homophobic by accepting their reasoning for kissing girls. If Tyra had suggested that maybe these girls were gay I think people would have had a major problem with that too, comparing kissing girls to be 'sexy' to kissing them because you are attracted to them. I think sexuality is way more complicated than just gay or straight.
I don't know what's worse,
the girls making out because of seeking attention, or their teenage "friends" pressuring them to do it because "it would be hot"? I mean, why even bother to be popular with that crowd?
As a teenager I don't remember ever being "dared" like that by guys to kiss a girl (well, truth-or-dare and spin-the-bottle aside, but the context was so different that it could not possibly compare) and if I was, I guess I would be somewhat insulted. So, I really feel like an old spinster saying this, but seriously, what is wrong with people these days? Is it me or is this all too big-brotherish? Since when is taking pleasure in people watching you make out with someone you don't like, or "pimping" a friend into making out with someone so you can watch, even remotely cool?
I don't know if I can get mad at these people - but I do pity them. Poor, ignorant "lesbian" (notice how the girl in the second video won't even say "lesbian") posers... and poor, desperate for "lesbian action" guys... Probably, they will never really learn what real girl-on-girl action is like. They do insult me (believe me, even more than giving lesbians a bad name, they are responsible for "bisexual" sounding like "slut", which is a direct insult to me) but mostly they insult and degrade themselves.
I blame Tila Tequila.
Sexism strikes again! It makes me sad that these straight (straight?) women are so detached from their bodies! Kissing can be so deliciously explosive and these women and girls are claiming to feel numb and neutral when their lips are locked with someone else's. I wonder if, out of habit, they still feel this detached when they're making out with their boyfriends?
I don't know...
most of the girls I've met who are into that sort attention-seeking tend to not have boyfriends. Most guys I know are into "girl-on-girl action." However, there tend to be two distinct types: 1) the type that like to see it between girls BEFORE they hook up with them, 2) and those looking for girl-on-girl during the hook-up. Either way, these girls aren't what any guy I know would take seriously.
Also, these girls are serious enough about it to call it a lifestyle choice, (unlike being a lesbian, you pathetic bitches--seriously, I want to call them and talk to them) so there's a LOT going on here. The younger girl is a completely different story. Really, I just want to give her a hug and tell her that she's beautiful and that guys who pressure to do things that don't bring her any pleasure aren't worth it.
im sry, but
seriously these girls are completely objectifying themselves in order to attain attention from men makes me sick....and not even if it was for a man if it were two men kissing for a woman or whatever the case maybe....the fact that one is willing to treat them selves as puppets for others attention makes them servile, the idea that my 12 and 13 yr old cousins would do this for some acne faced prepubescent kid is horrifying. and the lesbian on the show was right people see straight girls makeout for them and assume when lesbians do it its because they want the same neandrthalic attention thus making gay women a display, a relationship that is nothing more than male attention derived ugh
If your from FL vote no on 2!!!!!
What offends me is that the
What offends me is that the two girl in the first clip seem to think it's a choice to be a lesbian, and that it's a lifestyle.
I'm also wondering if there isn't some arousal between the two, because I am absolutely disgusted when it comes to kissing a man. I know it varies for every woman... but still, it makes me wonder.
I AGREE
I agree with you Sophie I think they like doing it. If you are not aroused by someone it can be totally disgusting and not something you would want to do repeatedly. I am sure their are plenty of teenage boys that are willing to give the girls attention without the lesbian liplock. I can remember being young and making excuses for why I was not interested in boys or dating any. I think they are justifying their behavior.
oh good god. its your
oh good god. its your lifestyle choice that you choose to be a lesbian. and the hostess is surprised that there is actually passion and pain and its not all like a bad cheezy pop song.
and a kid with low self esteem doing what she thinks boys want . guess that's standard fare for daytime schlock shows
no way
what people do to to get attention
its just sad
This embarrasses me
These girls have no idea. They have completely objectified every other woman gay or straight. Tyra just doesn't get it. Tyra gives the floor to these vapid, insipid Katy Perry wannabes without really giving much thought to how she presented this issue and these girls. Men harass us enough as it is for being gay ("you haven't slept with the right guy"---as if they are). Now we are even more likely to be targeted by straight guys because of these girls. Just stupid.
I wonder if Sarah Palin ever tried that to bag "the First Dude". Just wondering...
Classic
"You haven't slept with the right guy"
That's classic! All men think they are soooo good when the truth is, they are...NOT!
I used to date guys in the past and let me tell you...they suck lol!
Maybe, that's exactly why so many girls are "going gay" these days.
Another classic from men. when they see two women making out:
"Isn't there anything missing there?"
Men, get over yourselves!!
