The campaign is really heating up now, and the mudslinging is in high gear. Sarah Palin spent the weekend slamming Barack Obama by saying he's “palling around with terrorists” and that he “is not a man who sees America like you and I see America.” Both comments were not-so-veiled racist, divisive rhetoric that could end up backfiring.
She also revealed one of her sources of wisdom at a rally in California on Saturday: "I'm reading on my Starbucks mocha cup, okay? The quote of the day... It was Madeleine Albright, former Secretary of State [crowd boos] and U.N. ambassador... Now she said it, I didn't. She said, 'There's a place in Hell reserved for women who don't support other women.'" As you can see from the cup, that's not actually what Albright said. Albright hit back along with blogger John Aravosis who said there's also "a place in hell for women who charge rape victims for their rape kits." Maybe Palin should switch to Celestial Seasonings' quotes or even a Magic 8-Ball so that she doesn't have to remember so many pesky words.
Obama's camp swung back with an ad calling John McCain “erratic” on the economy along with a 13-minute documentary on McCain having been one of the Keating 5 Congressmen who were investigated for corruption during the savings and loan scandal of the 1980s.
The gloves seem to be officially off, or (in honor of O.J. Simpson being officially guilty of something), “If the glove don't hit, you gonna get bit.”

A Showdown That Was More of a Letdown:
"Time and again, the NBC newsman inflicted frivolous rules on the candidates that only served to frustrate true debate and the kind of give-and-take that a "town hall" format supposedly encourages."
That was precisely Brokaw's job.
"He called for "discussion" periods that seemed only a minute long; what kind of a "discussion" is that? If a discussion really did threaten to break out, Brokaw got grumpy and called it off. The least important thing on an occasion such as this are a bunch of arbitrary rules concocted by the debate organizers (with the counsel of both parties, Brokaw insisted)."

Where hate speech leads
Not only are McCain and Pain releasing hate speech, it's resonating with a "certain segment" of their supporters:
Dana Milbank reports on a Palin event in Clearwater FL:
"One of his earliest supporters is a man named Bill Ayers," she said. ("Boooo!" said the crowd.) "And, according to the New York Times, he was a domestic terrorist and part of a group that, quote, 'launched a campaign of bombings that would target the Pentagon and our U.S. Capitol,' " she continued. ("Boooo!" the crowd repeated.)
"Kill him!" proposed one man in the audience.

Minnesota Latinos for Obama
::Waves to you all::
I'm terribly busy this week, so you won't see me commenting much. But I wanted to let y'all know that the Minnesota Latinos for Obama united with Minnesota First Americans for Obama (Native Americans)raised more than $100,000 for Obama. This is the most money Minnesota Latinos have ever raised for a political candidate. We have made history.
Last Thursday I attended a reception held at the Landmark Center in St. Paul, MN. New Mexico Governor Bill Richardson and Minnesota State Senator Patricia Torres-Ray spoke. Torres-Ray "tackled" Richardson at the Democratic National Convention and persuaded him to come speak in Minnesota.
As predicted, the Latino community is starting to become a political force in this country.
That's great news
I just saw Bill Richardson last night on MSNBC. I was thinking about how courageous a call it was on his part to support Obama so early. I'd really like to see him get a serious cabinet appointment. Considering the damage that Alberto Gonzalez has done in being a token Latino appointment, I'd like to see Bill become Secretary of State.
"more more more..how do you like it?"
I now understand Palin
any insight she gets is from Starbucks, the coffee dregs at the bottom of her cup and her assistant that gets the coffee (Palin couldn't enter a Starbucks, it'd make her unclean)
Some love will be coming tomorrow morning
This is from Daily Kos
RICHMOND, Va. - The wife of Republican Sen. Chuck Hagel plans to endorse Democrat Barack Obama.
Lilibet Hagel has scheduled a 10 a.m. news conference in Alexandria, Va., on Tuesday with Susan Eisenhower, the daughter of Republican President Eisenhower.
Hagel, R-Neb., has made no endorsement. Lilibet Hagel said in an Associated Press interview that her decision was independent of her husband. She said she didn't know whether he would make an endorsement or whom he would support.
Alma Powell where you at?

So....
Sarah Palin admits she drinks Starbucks. That makes her an "Arugula-eating, latte-drinking, Joe Six-Pack" now....right...?
OMG.......
I am soooo burned out.
I'm writing in...... Dan Quayle. Will someone just kill me.

I didn't say this...
Sarah Palin did, "'There's a place in Hell reserved for women who don't support other women.'" (Sarah did not quote Madeline so it has become her statement.) I am a woman and I am a lesbian. Sarah Palin does not support lesbians who are women. Need I say more...
Hey Lucifer there's another reservation...
Peace and love!
She also doesn't support
women who are raped; women who are poor and can't afford to raise a child, or even bring the child into the world (think healthy food, prenatal vitamins, medical care, hospital stay, etc.); women who are battered (her running mate voted against the violence against women act); women who care about the environment; women who care about animals; women who want equal pay; young women who want realistic sex education, or who want to be responsible about when and with whom and under what circumstances they reproduce....The list goes on....
I just don't understand how anyone really, but especially women, can vote for a ticket with Palin's name on it. What kind of woman--other than herself--does she help exactly? I don't get it....
Elisabeth Hasselbeck.
Elisabeth Hasselbeck.
Yeah, ewwww....
I'm normally more eloquent than that, but when it comes to Hasselbeck, I really have no words. I was watching clips from The View on YouTube yesterday.
OMG!! Is she still around??? YIKES!!!

I always thought
there was a special place in hell for Madeleine Albright (actually, I still do)... But kudos for "a place in hell for women who charge rape victims for their rape kits."
Plus, can anyone please explain to me the Obama-being-pals-with-terrorists argument? I never understood where that came from, or why anyone would buy it (but then again I also don't get how someone could not "believe in" the greenhouse effect, so...) However, I do think that Palin got the “[Obama] is not a man who sees America like you and I see America" right. At least I hope she did, because really, the way Palin seems to see America scares me more and more.
Seriouly, I hate the way political campaigns get too ugly - not to mention too personal - right before elections. It just reminds me why I can't trust any politician, really. It seems that you americans are getting an overdose of political ugliness right now... so good luck with that.
In regard to the whole "being friends with terrorists" claim....
There are two reasons the McCain camp can actually get people to buy that nonsense. Well, three if you include the fact that some people are completely clueless when it comes to what's going on in the world. The other two, I'd say, are:
1) The first association has to do with his Muslim name and ancestry. The Bush administration has been able to produce and maintain a rapidly growing climate of fear, based on an entirely false claim that all Muslims have terrorists and that the Qur'an promotes terrorism (they must be reading a translation that comes from the publisher of their bizarre version of the Bible). Seeing as having an Islamic name now means you're subject to all sorts of humiliating, borderline human rights violation-type treatment at airport security, it's not that surprising that the Republicans can generate fear regarding Senator Obama (whose--very common--middle name happens to be Hussein).
2) More specifically toward the "palling around" aspect, he has some questionable "ties" to William Ayers, the founder of a (now non-existent) radical group called Weather Underground, who was at one time responsible for plans of domestic terrorism (including bombings of NYC police headquarters in '70, the U.S. Capitol in '71 and the Pentagon in '72. Let's keep in mind that Senator Obama was born in 1961, so he was 9, 10 and eleven respectively during those bombings.
The men have been linked during a much later period when they met at a luncheon about school reform in Chicago (they were living three blocks from each other at the time). When Obama first ran for office, Ayers held a "coffee" in support of his first election. Then they were both members of The Woods Fund of Chicago, an anti-poverty group, between 2000 and 2002, which met around 12 times, total during that period. Ayers also gave $200 to Obama's reelection campaign in 2001; however there has been little linking the two men since 2002.
So basically, at this point, linking Obama to Ayers' terrorist actions would be somewhat like blaming McCain for the environmental damages done to whatever land on which the Hiltons built their latest hotel. They ARE, after all, big contributers in the McCain campaign and it is likely that, as high-profile Republicans, they know one another. Now, if anyone tried to make that claim, they'd be looked at as ridiculous, but they've somehow managed to convince some people of the Democratic candidate's ties to terrorism.
But that's more or less where they're getting that nonsense. Oh, and I'm totally with you on not wanting to see Palin's interpretation of America, and on disliking the direction political campaigns generally take in the final countdown. I'm an American living in France, and am quite happy that I'm able to filter what I'm exposed to, a bit. I'm not watching the television ads at all, for example. Of course, there is a downside. Did you know that the votes of Americans overseas are only counted if the election is really close? So, basically, unless the election is as close as it was in 2000, chances are, no one will even bother to look at my absentee ballot. Most expatriates I know are left-wing. Think at how much that could change the outcome of an election....
Thanks a lot
Everything is now clear to me! So, Obama is a terrorist (starting from the age of nine) and McCain is personaly responsible for the greenhouse effect...wait, does McCain even believe in the greenhouse effect? It always saddens me and strikes me as an irony that racism towards muslim, black, gay or any other group of people still passes in a country where the statue of liberty is considered to be a national symbol.
Funnily enough, it seems as if conservatives all over the world take pleasure in using the "terrorist-pals" argument: here in Greece too, there are two small left parties that are constantly being accused of that by the conservative party. It's just that I never expected to hear that in a republicans-democrats conflict...
So OK, what the hell is the (political) logic of not really counting the votes of americans overseas??? WTF, I had no idea about that one and honestly, I never thought this could be the case (in Greece the votes of the greeks overseas do count and many times contribute decisively to the actual result of the election). Ugly, ugly, ugly! So really, thanks for the info.
You're welcome.
Oh, and for the record, as far as I know, no one's blamed McCain for any environmental issues that may or may not have come up during the construction of any of the Hilton Hotels. I was just using that as an example as to how ridiculous making direct links from a politician to all of his/her acquaintances is.
Where in Greece are you? Morocco and Greece are the two countries I want to visit most in the world. Granted, I want to go everywhere, but Greece (specifically the islands) definitely tops the list.
Yes, it kills me that they may not even count my vote. Sadly, not quite as much as it would if I had to move back to the U.S. I like Europe and my life's been here for the past five years. I keep listening to hear if maybe something has changed about the vote-counting protocol, but haven't heard anything thus far. I don't understand it. Does that mean they don't count the votes of soldiers who are fighting for the country too? Technically, they're overseas votes, too....
Hi, Dreamtrapped
Your post made me think of the conversation I just had with my friend/co-worker. We were just talking about how fewer people voting keeps the same shit in power and the same system of things in play. Imagine if all the people not voting (and there was no orchestrated disenfranchisement) for whatever reason (won't make a difference, they're all the same, etc.) voted, and let's say they overwhelmingly voted for Dennis Kucinich, Ron Paul, or Cynthia McKinney, and we knew this for a fact (if this is possible anymore). So, would the super-delegates still kick our common asses? Would the electoral college still kick our asses? Hmmm. What would happen then in the mind's of the common folk?
Is it even possible in this system of things to affect a major shift or change, if that is what the common folk had finally decided on and banded together to initiate? I would love to stare directly into the eyes of this answer.
Jodie
"fewer people voting keeps the same shit in power"
Well said! I will keep wondering two, what would happen (not in USA, in any country) if more people realized that voting could make such a difference? I know a bunch of people who don't vote, specifically because they don't trust anyone anymore (actually, not-trusting-anyone is probably one of the few things that almost everyone in Greece agrees on...) - so what if all these people decided to vote for those that are now considered outsiders? If you ask me, there is a lot of unexpressed public rage/frustration/dissapointment, that I wish we could express in an effective way towards our governments. Maybe things would get better then.

McCain and Palin are coming
McCain and Palin are coming to Lehigh University, at the Stabler Arena. I'm thinking about it. Tickets are on sale.
I'm thinking not because I like these two guys, but because I want to see this with my own eyes and hear with my own ears.
This has got to be one of the most glamorized, entertained election we've seen in a long time - and at a time of uncertainty it almost looks too fake.
and further more, I expect people to talk shit about each of the candidates...but I EXPECT more from the candidates themselves. Or is all of this just playing to the tune of the people, just for acceptance?
Anyway, I wonder if these candidates doubt they'll get in because someone's planting their ass on a throne that they've made?

Seriously, I just want to see and hear with my own being. I've never been to a political rally, other then the ones my mom use to drag me to, back in the 70's, when she was involved in the local politic scene.
My mom is a smart cookie and she doesn't even like that duo.
I checked it out, the rally is free, but one has to get tickets. And when it was in Sunday's paper, I don't think it said anything about being free - just where to get the tickets.

Palin made a serious mistake claiming Obama "pals around with terrorists." Until only a couple of years ago, her husband was a card-carrying member of the Alaska Independence Party.
The Alaska Independence Party was founded by Joe Vogler. Vogler disappeared under suspicious circumstances in May 1993. His body was found the following year. Check out this article from the 10/15/1994 NY Times and ask yourself, Why would a leader of a legitimate political party need explosives? Could it be (duh, duh, duh) to commit acts of domestic terrorism?
Remains of Alaska Separatist Are Identified
"Fingerprint tests show that human remains found in a gravel pit east of Fairbanks on Wednesday are those of Joe Vogler, the founder of the Alaskan Independence Party, who vanished in May 1993, Alaska state troopers said today."
"The discovery of the remains, following an anonymous tip to the authorities, apparently resolves a year-and-a-half-old mystery concerning Mr. Vogler, a folk hero throughout the state who was 80 when he disappeared from his home here."
"The blue tarp and duct tape in which the remains were wrapped, officials said, matched a description given by a convicted thief, Manfred West, who confessed last summer that he had killed Mr. Vogler in a plastic-explosives sale gone bad and had then buried him."
