k.d. lang: Dancing Barefoot

I've loved k.d. lang since 1990. She was a great inspiration for my becoming a vegetarian and a role model during my coming out process. For these things alone, I am deeply grateful. But she has given and continues to give me so much more.

I saw her in concert last weekend in Santa Barbara after not seeing her for at least 12 years. It was like reconnecting with an old, dear friend. Watching her roam the stage in her bare feet, vest and tie, singing flawlessly all the while, I remembered why and how much I love her. Palmary voice aside, I see myself in her — a big-boned gay gal with short, tousled hair who loves music, lives honestly and flirts relentlessly.
The median age of the crowd was at least 45, and seemingly more straight than gay. (Maybe all the homos were down the street at Swan Lake. Hard to know.) But those older heteros gave that singing dyke several standing ovations and brought her back for two encores. Gotta love them for that. They certainly loved her.

k.d.'s band was, as usual, spot on as they worked their way through a catalog of music ranging from cabaret to honky tonk to pop to folk to whatever other genre you can think of. A rendition of Leonard Cohen's “Hallelujah” brought the house down, much like when she used to do Roy Orbison's “Crying.” The intensity of emotion funneled through k.d.'s gentle rendering is mesmerizing on CD and video, but to witness it live is nothing but chilling. I think she may have displaced Jeff Buckley's version of the same tune as my favorite.

What makes k.d. so beguiling is multi-faceted. First, her voice is simply one of the most pitch-perfect you will ever hear. Second, she approaches each song with honesty, inhabiting the story and infusing it with herself. Third, she has said in interviews that the voice is inseparable from life itself: “Your sexuality, your honesty, your spirituality, your physicality, your health... everything is intrinsically linked to the voice.” It naturally follows that she knows how to use and respect her voice in a way that is authentic and, in turn, she doesn't need to perform vocal acrobatics to get her point — or the song's — across. Fourth, she works the mic like nobody's business, probably better than any other singer I can think of. You can see that in the video. Watch how she pulls the mic away or to the side in order for the technology to help her convey just the right level of power or tenderness.

If all that weren't enough, the playful side of her is also incredibly charming. She flitted about the stage to songs like “Miss Chatelaine,” thanking the boisterous audience for their appreciation of quality dance. She later joked about starting to play the banjo because she heard it was a chick magnet. When a few ladies hooted and hollered their approval, she replied with, “See? It's working.”

To get a better sense of k.d. as a person, watch this interview from the Houston PBS channel. Bet she makes your heroes list, too.

Just found out KD Lang is coming to the theater where I work. Excited. Thanks for this post :)

sounds like an awesome show.

sounds like an awesome show.

k.d.

Kelly, I'm late coming to your blog because it has been a crazy week.

I've been listening to k.d. lang ever since I first heard her interviewed on NPR in the late 1980's and they played a couple of tunes from her "Absolute Torch and Twang" album. As soon as I heard her voice, I knew I had to purchase her music.

Her repertoire over the year has been eclectic and multi-faceted. And her voice--what a gift. I saw her perform live in Detroit in the mid-1990s.

One more thing. You've probably gathered from my love of cheeseburgers that she never influenced me to be a vegetarian. Smiling at ya!

I'd love to see her

It would be great to watch her perform in different genres. I need to let go of my association of her as a C&W performer so I can enjoy her other work more. And, she's a pretty incredible human being. Thanks for writing about this Kelly. You've inspired me to cruise iTunes and see what I might like to add to my music library.

Much better!

You can sit wherever you like.

right after she came out

right after she came out professionally, i was sitting around in Tennessee with a group of folks who already suspected i was going to leave some sort of hippie/ radical/ environmentalist/ dyke/rainbow family curse on their abode long after i was gone. had given a friend a ride down to visit his father in the hospital, and was staying at his brother's house, who was none too happy to have a compact car with greenpeace bumper stickers parked in his drive ( i told him to tell his neighbors he had kidnapped me and was brainwashing me )
I remember one of the folks mentioning that she'd heard that kd was one of them lesbians, and no one would believe her - she just couldn't be, because they had been listening to her music and liked it - it must have been a mistake.

sex appeal

My dad took me to see k.d. perform live when I was seventeen. I remember having to fight the urge to rush the stage and fling my underwear at her.

I have an interesting theory

That a part of the magic with K.D Lang comes from a subliminal connotation in her name (just put a "us" at the end) that could explane your urge

Please somebody, tel me i'm not the only one who have thought of that...

silly

k.d. langus? Are you suggesting that such a fine lyricist as she is a cunning linguist?

that's the key

of poetic language
(i know i'm silly)

editor

Hmm...

I dunno. For me it was more the suave butchness, killer singing voice, and mid-croon bedroom eyes.

I said it was subliminal

the rest are excuses "a posteriori"

BTW i'm only jocking

coming from you...

My favourite artist of all time. Her voice is full of understated soul and emotion, heard live it'll give you goosebumps. She just gets better. Still love her version of 'Johnny Get Angry' too! A born entertainer. Love her.

ooh, there's loads! Three Cigarettes, The Joker ... have you heard her rendition of What's New Pussycat?! :D

author

I have, indeed.

Even saw her perform it in pajamas on some something years ago.

awesome

you lucky lass :D

Been so touched by her

As most french canadians who sometimes forget to listen to canadian artists who do not speak French I did not know much about K.D. Lang up until about a year ago. Sure I knew that she was a lesbian and that she had a great success with "Constant Cravings" but that was it. I had the chance to go to one of her concert last summer in Montreal...and my god....what a feast!! I sat there in complete awe ......she completely surprised me with her voice......the way she interacts with the crowd....her gentleness.....She touched my soul. The whole show is a gift for our heart and soul. If you have the chance to go and see her live...don't miss it....it is a must.

author

Truly

I first saw her in 1992 on the Ingenue tour and was on the edge of my seat the entire time. Of course, I was in the front row of the balcony so the leaning was a little necessary, but still.

(See, Foxyloxy? It's not just me.)

So you're saying...

if I see her in concert I'll have a revelation? Perhaps see the light? LOL!

Perhaps.

Perhaps.

a must experience...

I have most of her cds but this summer was the first time seeing and hearing her in concert when she came to my hood..I was blown away, goosebumps the whole concert, and that's a good thing. My goosebumps know a good musician when there's one present.
they actually added a second show and I believe both were sold out. there were a lot of grandpas and grandmas there, which surprised me.
anyway, next time, I'm getting my other family members to experience the awesomeness that's K.D.!!
er, whenever that will be. but hey, we can wait.

WOW...

what an incredibe voice...
and an awesome version of this song!!!!
k.d. you rock!

I want to see her live.

I want to see her live. "Hallelujah" is one of my favorite songs. I think both Jeff Buckley's version and k.d. lang's are both brilliant. And I doubt I could ever decide which I liked better due to (as I see it) two very different interpretations.

If you were to recommend one album of hers, which would it be?

author

hmmm....

Each one has a totally different vibe, really.

Hymns of the 49th Parallel is all pretty mellow and gorgeous. It's covers of songs by Canadian songwriters.

Ingenue is also fairly mellow with a few upbeat numbers. It's musically eclectic and doesn't fit into a genre.

All You Can Eat and Invincible Summer both lean more pop and upbeat. They are also both great.

I'm assuming you don't want country or Tony Bennett duets. And Drag is my least favorite. I'd say take a listen to some snippets of the other four on iTunes and see what moves you. They are all fantastic.

She has done it..

"with grace and truth". A true "icon".

Honestly

I've never been much of a fan of hers. Partially because the first time I ever heard her speak - on an award show, I was a little kid and she was talking about 'Sweet Home Alberta,'blah, blah, blah, 'Canada' in a way that I thought portrayed us all as a bunch of country bumpkins! Not only had I been educating people from a young age that, "no we don't all know each other up in Canada" so "no I can't say hi to your cousin Bob who lives in Ontario...," but I haven't ever been fond of generalizations!! It seamed contrary to what I had been trying to teach people, thus annoying me.
The other part was due to my feelings of absolute disdain toward country music.
However, thanks to a friend of mine whose partner was one of her long-term crew so she was subsequently well-versed with her as a musician and a person...I actually was introduced to her outside of the C&W realm and learned a bit about her. I do respect her humanitarian causes and that she can pull in a predominately hetero audience and I agree that she has a great voice, but that is it for me. I won't go out of my way to see her or acquire any of her music.

Hate to say it, but...

I think you're going to have to sit in the back of the class for a while until I forgive you for this.

*sitting in the back of the class already*

kd has a great voice and I like some of the music she does. But I wasn't into her initially because I'm not a fan of CW music. It reminds me of being dragged to the old country bar (The Purple Place) where my mom sent me with my dad figuring he may get drunk, but at least he wouldn't mess around with other women in front of me. Nobody cared that I was 9 years old and hanging out in a bar. But I got pretty tired of the sob stories sitting on the bar stools and listening to someone singing them from the juke box at the same time.

Country

Well, k.d. hasn't been country in a very long time. Two of the cds are pure pop, in fact. So yeah, you're in the back for lack of effort. If you'd only exert yourself...

I don't even know if one can

I don't even know if one can say it's pop.

I'll sit at B&N reading a mag and drinking my coffee and just feel pulled and relaxed and then realize k.d. is singing over head...and I just smile.

kd has her own genre. I have mad respect for that woman. She's incredibly talented.

And I'm going to admit, I don't have any of her albums. But the more I hear of her latest, the more I seem drawn to it...

I think I'm going to pick up her latest in the near future.
