Hot Food

Before Jennifer Beals was Bette, the elegant, assertive philanderer we've grown to know and love on The L Word, she played an angsty young welder/dancer in 1983's epic drama, Flashdance. By day, the sweaty seductress strapped on a headlamp whilst toiling in work boots. By night, the glitzy nymph dumped buckets of water on her writhing body at a Pittsburgh club for loot.

One evening she catches the attention of Nick Hurley, her older, curly-haired boss, who ends up taking her to dinner at some fancy lobster joint. Aside from the fact that she showed up in a bow tie and sleeveless tuxedo shirt (looking more like a male Chippendale than the fox that she is), she emanates sex for the duration of the meal. How does she do this? By sucking on tiny mounds of lobster meat while making banal conversaion with her tongue-tied employer. Make no bones about it: it was hot. You could tell that when they got back home, they totally did it, and it was awesome (mostly because of the lobster). Lobster is one of many foods that's acceptable to be seen eating in the presence of someone you hope to seduce.

Other foods, however, are to be avoided at all costs.

There's this scene in Fast Times at Ridgemont High where Ron Johnson, a hunky stereo salesman (way out of high school) hits on high school freshman Stacy Hamilton (Jennifer Jason Leigh) at her place of work, a pizza restaurant in the mall food court. Dapper Ron also works in the mall and immediately takes a liking to the doughy-cheeked waitress. After slinging his arm across the back of the booth to seem casual, he orders the following thing from dorky blouse-clad Stacy: "I'll take a meatball sandwich, a medium coke [slight pause]... and your phone number."

Okay. No. Not hot. Not hot for the following reasons: a) It's cheesy; b) She's underage (He doesn't know that, but whatever); and c) He ordered a meatball sandwich. A MEATBALL SANDWICH. He expected to eat balls of mall-grade meat encased in a sauce-drenched roll in plain view of his newfound crush, and still hoped to have sex with her.

Lucky for Ron Johnson, Stacy's a freshman and wants to rid herself of her virgin reputation (and impress older, more experienced friend Linda Barrett, played by half-naked Phoebe Cates), so she's unfazed by his atrociously uncomely food choice. Just as certain jobs can qualify a person's hotness quotient, the same can be said of the things they opt to publicly put in their mouths. If Ron Johnson had tried to pull that meatball shit with an age-appropriate individual (and not just an eager-to-please teen), there's no way he could have then lured her to the dugout and stuck it in. Gross.

A couple weeks ago I was standing outside a dyke bar in Chicago with my friend Jackie when I decided it was time to hightail it to the gas station next door for a snack. After perusing the sparsely stocked aisles, I encouraged her to get a Tabasco-flavored Slim Jim. That's what I wanted, that's what I had already started eating before having purchased it and, in a drunken stupor, thought it would be cute if we had matching snacks. We teetered crookedly out the glass doors and toward our respective girlfriends who were smoking cigarettes outside the bar. Suddenly Jackie yanked me back and crouched behind a gas pump.

"What are you doing?" I asked.

"We can't let them see us eating this!"

"What? A Slim Jim?" I asked.

"Yes! It's nasty!"

I stood there, perplexed and annoyed, watching her tear into the well-spiced tube of meat as she squatted near a littered curb. "But beef jerky is hot," I argued, and she shook her head in disagreement. I think I have a fairly firm grasp on food that's not sexy to be seen eating (quiche, ham, borscht, pudding, cottage cheese, roast beef, cream of wheat, egg salad, whole yams or Bit O' Honey) in public I personally think that beef jerky is hot. It screams "I'm primal and like to have sex!" in a way that few other foods do.

There are sexier foods, but still. I recently had to break it to my girlfriend, who frequently rants and raves about baklava, that baklava is really unhot, but not because of the food itself. Much like moussaka, chimichangas or baba ghanoush, it's the name that kills it.

Do you guys think there's such thing as sexy food? It seems no one I've talked to about this can reach a consensus on the topic. (Note: Whipped cream and chocolate are trite so they don't count.)

Oh please. I am so sorry, I guess there are many who need to be aroused and educated by an actress. Forgive me, I assumed lesbians were able to get their news and opinions on their own instead of being part of a captive audience.

You mean they barred the door, again?

Was there an Iron Maiden? *hopefull*
Republican, you are just TFF.

Thanks for the giggles,
Taem?

Jennifer Beals held you captive?

And you're complaining?

Wow, who'd a thunk it.

I know that Republicans decry actors entering the political arena. It is in the Republican playbook to dismiss any actor's efforts as Hollywood elitism.

But here's the mother of all ironies ... those same Republicans worship at the altar of Ronald Reagan (and to a lesser extent, Arnold the Governator.)

Go figure.

But the larger problem with your argument is that you agree that people need access to news/opinions/discussion/debate to participate fully as engaged, informed citizens of this Republic, but you seem to be all for censoring speech with which you don't agree.

No

I am not censoring anybody. You don't seem to be able to differentiate between a proper and improper forum. Go to an Obama rally and say these things. I don't want to go to a bar and hear blonde view girl spewing her ideas either.

I have never done this

I have never done this before - but you might want to avoid the nickel this saturday. just a heads up there will be an opinionated dyke with a guitar there who may stray off the musical topic of making out with women.

folk the wars!

Here's a hypothetical for you ...

I think your wish to decide for others what is a proper and what is an improper forum to speak is, in fact, a wish to censor people. By definition.

Here's a hypothetical for you ...

What if you had gotten wind the other night that Jennifer and Ilene were on their way to The Nickel to stump for Obama. What if you called them up and said, "Hey don't come; it's inappropriate." What if they heeded your wish. What if you then got up on stage and said, "Guess what everyone ... I, Republican Dyke, have just spared you all from having to put up with Jennifer Beals and Ilene Chaiken visiting our bar and spewing their elitist Hollywood drivel at us!"

Do you think you would have been applauded?

I don't know maybe I would have gotten a piece of ass at least.

Tight Ass, no doubt

Taem?

How is Republican ass?

I've been around the block a couple times and had quite a varied, satisfying, and, shall we say, well rounded sex life, but I can honestly say that I've never been with a Republican. And yet I'm strangely okay with that.

Good luck to you, though, in that endeavor!

I was with a Republican once

they were on leave from the US Navy...

Cute and sweet and a wee bit elitist.

Hmmm, a Naval Elitist, sounds like it should be edible right?

You should get a toaster oven ...

... for every Republican you flip over to the light. "One Naval Elitist over easy!"

"I've never been with a Republican"

Ditto. That would be my personal definition of Coyote Ugly.

Girl: What - Oh, what does Coyote Ugly mean?
Lil: Did you ever wake up sober after a one night stand, and the person you're next to is layin' on your arm, and they're so ugly, you'd rather chew off your arm then risk waking 'em? That's coyote ugly.

Your definition of Coyote Ugly ...

... and maybe my best definition of bisexuality: I'm much less interested (initially at least) in genitalia than in what comes out of someone's mouth. (And, yes, I know the last half of that sentence left me wide open for double-entendre ... as did the last half of this sentence.)

Taem?

I was also at the Nickel and

I was also at the Nickel and frankly I was embarrassed at how some of the drunk lesbians acted when Ilene and Jennifer walked in. One of the issues is that the owner of the Nickel did not publicize the fact the Jennifer and Ilene were specifically there to campaign for Obama. She really should have so that people knew what to expect.

Jennifer Beals is out working hard for YOUR RIGHTS among other things. She's a socially conscious, genuinely kind woman and, due to the fact that nobody really knew why they were stopping by, people were disappointed that they didn't talk about the L-word. That's not why they were there.

Jennifer Beals went door-to-door that day and met with many people. She was very kind and friendly.

Are you upset because she supports Obama or because they didn't want to talk about what you wanted to hear?

What did the drunken lesbians do?

What did they do that was so bad that embarrassed you? Did they flip their mullets around her? Did they use improper grammar? You know that bar is always full of drunken lesbians, so why go there if they are so bad?

Hummm......

Do lesbians still wear 'mullets' in Ohio.
How retro.......

well, I am in a battleground state (Va.)...

the last time Virginia voted for a Democratic president was LBJ...and polls predict it's going to be a close one here.
Heck, I would welcome a visit from Ms. Beals and Ms. Chaiken to discuss the election.
And, PK, I agree about Ms. Beals - heck, even if one wants to vote for ol' Mav, you have to give props to Ms. Beals - she has been an outspoken advocate on behalf of our community; she has essentially said she was proud to be an "honorary lesbian" and quite frankly, I'm proud to have her on our side...

Peace.

I'm jealous; it sucks not living in a battleground state

Even my North Carolina friends are getting more political action than folks in CA.

Me too

I'm in MA--though New Hampshire's just over the border, so we get the TV ads, but none of the foot traffic.

Trust me, we here in Ohio

Trust me, we here in Ohio cannot wait until it's over! Every 4 years we have celebrities from all over coming to our cities and college campuses to try to swing our votes. Then after the election we go right back to being a "fly-over" state and we never hear from those celebrities again.

I sure hope Jennifer and Ilene are deserving of all of my trust and support. I'm not even that big of a fan and I'm defending them. lol I was just at the bar with friends trying to keep the drunks from stealing my stool and elbowing me in the eye. They seem like very cool people though so hey, I'll give them props.

They just seem to me to really care about people

You can always move to Tex ass

PK, If you really get fed up with it, come on out to Texas. They are so sure the state cannot be turned that they don't even bother with us. Sad, but true.

Hope you enjoyed your evening. I think I would have.

:)Taem?

I did really enjoy my

I did really enjoy my evening..I just hate bars. I honestly don't mind when the actors come out to Ohio. We had Kevin Bacon, Gina Gershon and a few others come to Kent State in 2004. They walked around campus and encouraged people to register to vote. Michael Moore and Rosanne Barr came that year too. It just happens every four years and then after the election they all go away.

I'm happy I had the chance to see Jennifer Beals and Ilene Chaiken, I just would have preferred to see them at a library or art gallery rather than a bar. People were really friendly towards them but the shear volume of loud, drunk people is unnerving.

I can relate

There use to be a bar I liked, because it was quiet and most customers were there just to socialize over a couple of beers and a game of pool. Now, the place is overrun by loud drunks, drama, and there's always fights over really stupid crap.

Unfortunately, this is where you find a lot the younger LGBT people today, which is probably why JB and IC went there. When the economy tanks, most young people tend to hit the bars and clubs, mainly because they can get drunk, forget their worries, and it's cheap.

As for having to deal with being overrun every four years by celebrities, count your blessings. Here in Southern California, we have to put up with the media being saturated daily with which one is screwing who, the latest arrests, etc. At least you got the smart ones out there. We got stuck with Spears, Lohan, and Hilton, who can't leave town due to court restrictions, lol.

Illegitimi non carborundum

Well........You know Ms. Kitty ;)

I would prefer to see Jennifer Beals in my bedroom. I've been told it's a very 'friendly' place. A Flat screen to watch an old, romantic Clark Gable movie, a fireplace with overstuffed pillows where Jennifer can rest her weary head, and my sunken jacuzzi tub filled with luxurious bubbles with a delicious, slight lavender scent...... candles everywhere, beckoning her to me.........There will be no loud, beer swilling, drunken lesbians .....well, possibly loud.... moans. But, no drunken lesbians in the beach house !!

Hummmm.......did I just say that out loud?? :o

Sorry.... now Ms. Kitty, back to the library or art gallery.... have I told you that I think it's a fabulous idea. ;)

I know Kitty..... I'm a pig Pig Pictures, Images and Photos

Quiet intimate spaces

I know what you mean. Bars are tolerable for drag shows and celebrations in honor of people who are really into that scene. Otherwise, I prefer natural spaces or small quiet gatherings in people's homes. Though, there is one little dive bar in Austin with air hockey, pool, and a shooting game that is not heavily populated at certain times. Basically a grown up club house without the need to have a membership card. You just have to be willing to roll with the idea that it is hit or miss as to who will be there and have a backup plan.

:) Taem?

Have mercy, Taem, I thought you were talking about me!

Oh, Tex! Never! You clearly the rare jewel in this sea of high emission coal. Sorry for my lack of enthusiasm for our little former nation; It has been sheer hell with all the rednecks at work lately.

You can sweet talk me anytime - I've never been

Nothing but love

Tex

And now I'm thinking

of all the wonderful ways that Jewel could be worn. Damn! My mind is Sooo... given to fantasy lately!

;) Taem?

Here's a question for you PK...

Did you go out to the bar that night with hopes/expectations of seeing Ilene and Jennifer or was it a typical Saturday night at the Nickel for you where Jennifer and Ilene just happened to show up?

*** ***

Of course my friends and I

Of course my friends and I went to see them. We often go to hear the musicians that we know perform, but we heard that they might show up so we went out. I don't care for bars that much so I don't stay at them very long. We didn't know why they were going to be there until shortly before they arrived and pledges to vote early were passed around. Why do you ask?

Peacekitty

I said in my post that these comments apply to Republican Hollywood elitists as well. She wouldn't have been there but for her being on the L Word, and obviously that was the draw for her to be at a lesbian bar - she could have attended the Obama rally and spoke there in Canton today since her sole purpose is to campaign for him. As far as my rights, I don't need her or want her defining what my rights are, and my rights extend way beyond gay rights. Perhaps she is a kind woman, but arrogant enough to think we care or need her guidance for this election. By the way, did the owner even know that they were there to specifically campaign for Obama? I am not a huge L Word fan but frankly if that hot Alice came and pimped for Obama maybe I would have been salivating more instead of bitching.

I must be REALLY arrogant!

I've stumped all over the place, and nobody knows me!

LOL
Taem?

Taem

If you went to a lesbian bar as a special guest escorted by cleveland police, had the whole bar shushed so that you could spew your nonsense via a microphone, spewed your nonsense, and then left surrounded by the police meanwhile these desparate lesbians who worship you because you kiss a girl on tv and grab a boobie here and there too don't get their autographs because that is why you were going in the first place, well then you are arrogant.

I knew there was a point here, somewhere!

You're pissed because she didn't brush YOUR tit! Its all cuming clear to me now.

Got to say RD, I'm really enjoying this one. Nothing like a good give and take with the opposition. And you are oh, so... giving tonight.

Want to agree to disagree, or are you enjoying this as much as I am?

lol
Taem?

Did someone say 'Brushing Tits' I'll vote for that....;)

BUBBA LOVE
LAKE
"Love is you mirrored in another person." KD

You obviously were ignorant

to the fact that Jennifer and Ilene did sign autographs. But then again, acknowledging that wouldn't lend any kind of credence to your argument.

Deean

I was standing right there as I was salivating over one of the female cops - they left pretty much right away, no time to debate their views with the gop lesbians either! Say what you want via mike and leave.

Your report

doesn't echo many other reports...

Perhaps you were too caught up in your own lust and you missed what was happening... and that included autographs being signed out the back.

Just a question - did Martin Luther King debate when he made grand statements and proclamations? Or did he make them with the hope someone was listening?

People are now arrogant

because they care?

This is a perfect example of why more people don't take the initiative to talk out and express what they understand the world to be.

You don't have to agree with what someone is saying to respect their rights to say it. You don't have to agree with what someone is saying to respect them. More importantly, you personally may not want or need people like Jennifer Beals fighting for your rights, but the reality is without people like Jennifer and Ilene we have no rights.

It's people that have the guts to speak out, no matter what the situation that gave women the right to vote, black rights. It's these people who have campaigned that have secured gay marriage or civil unions.

Your advocating silence, and it's in silence and in the darkness that evil gets to breed and come to power. Silence should never be advocated, it should be universally decried.

No

You all just don't get it - there is a proper forum for this stuff, ie an Obama rally with people in the audience who actually want to hear your opinions. They care about the audience being moved to think and vote the way they want them to. Personally I don't want some of the rights for which they advocate and probably a good percentage of the women there agree. No one advocates silence, just do it in the proper forum and not at a bar where everyone had to stop speaking and socializing and listen to their bs.

Do you not have the power

to walk away?

That being said, it is a proper forum. Just because you don't want to rights doesn't mean the people should be extended the basic rights that are lauded to the rest of humanity. I pity people who don't want basic human rights.

You are advocating silence. You forget where civil change happens, it isn't at a rally with like minded people - it's at home, on the street and in a pub where civil change happens. It's these places, historically, we have seen the beginning of movements. If you don't care, well, that's sad - but don't expect other people to agree with you.

Deean for the last time, read this slowly

They are free to do this at a political rally or some other political forum. They are not being silenced. If they want civil change, why preach to a group of lesbians? Talk about like minded people. Why should I have to walk away, I paid to get in that hole and was drinking there with friends. Then we all had to stop talking and listen to them pontificate. How would you feel if the blonde view girl came into your favorite lesbian dive and everyone was silenced while she told you how to vote? Ohhhhhh.

If you haven't figured it out

I think you are full of piss and vinegar and disagree with you.

And the Blonde View girl has a name, it's Elisabeth, and while I disagree with her blind devotion it doesn't mean I get to denigrate her into a strange identifier based on hair colour and employment.

If they want civil change, why not talk to Lesbians? Are Lesbians not part of the world community?

'Hollywood elitists' don't exist

The term is really just an updated, more PC version of McCarthy-era 'pinko' or 'commi.' The only qualification as far as I can see is that someone is vaguely artistic and doesn't vote Republican. And the reason I say 'vaguely artistic' is because I've heard theatre actors and independent film folk who've never set foot on a Hollywood set branded as such.

The idea that Ms. Beals is arrogant because she has chosen to speak publicly on issues and a candidate that she is passionate about is utterly absurd. That is every citizen's choice (some would say duty), and she did not abnegate it upon becoming an actress. Also, the idea that those involved in the arts should not seize the bully pulpit completely ignores all of human history and the crucial role artists have played in political and social movements. Most art is politically motivated on some level; therefore, it is a logical extension for artists to agitate and advocate in the public sphere.

I personally was quite moved by the descriptions of those who saw Jennifer that night who said she was clearly shy and not that comfortable being the center of attention. If she cares that deeply about this country to step out of her comfort zone I think we can all, regardless of political affiliation, learn something from her about what it means to be an active, engaged citizen. If there were more Jennifer Beals, and fewer people shouting 'Hollywood elite' this country wouldn't be the mess that it is.

Thanks Mystics, you actually

Thanks Mystics, you actually "got it", unlike others who made a petty judgment about straying off-topic. How often do we do that around here (not often at all)...and how often have the people who criticized it done the exact same thing in the past? Okay I'm off the soap box now, sorry everyone. Back to talking about slim jim's and strawberries....
