Jerry Falwell, the founder of the so-called Moral Majority and Liberty University, and one of the most visible, vocal anti-gay evangelicals in the country,
died today.
I don't want to turn this into a predictable, mean-spirited "Good riddance" type of blog post, but it's fair to note some of Mr. Falwell's more outrageous utterances, and hope that his types of sentiments will one day die out as well. Here are a few to start; I'll post more in the coming hour...
"Homosexuality is Satan's diabolical attack upon the family that will not only have a corrupting influence upon our next generation, but it will also bring down the wrath of God upon America."
About the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks:
"I really believe that the pagans, and the abortionists, and the feminists, and the gays and the lesbians who are actively trying to make that an alternative lifestyle, the ACLU, People For the American Way, all of them who have tried to secularize America. I point the finger in their face and say 'you helped this happen.'" (about the Sept. 11, 2001 terrorist attacks)
About the gay Metropolitan Community Church
"a vile and Satanic system [that will] one day be utterly annihilated and there will be a celebration in heaven."
Update:
Devil's Advocate made a good point in her
comment below. Now that Mr. Falwell is gone, let's leave the rest of his quotes to the dustbin of history. I won't post any more quotes here. Instead, I'm going to have some lunch. Take that, Jerry F.

Christopher Hitchens Roasts Jerry Falwell
This is brilliant. The following clip is from "Anderson Cooper 360".

I Couldn't Help Pondering
Which way he went.
I could just see a group of people looking down and the other looking up. Oh well...
The cool side of the pillow in June.
I just have to post this:
It´s a 1983 parody of a magazine advertisement featuring Falwell and published in Hustler.
And here's some more information about the case Hustler Magazine vs. Falwel:

my one experience with Falwell
was 21 years ago, when I was an "inmate" at a Fundamentalist Baptist Home. We were told to put on our uniforms and given a little American flag to wave as he drove in. I can't remember a single word he said that night, and I have a very good memory. I assume he bored me that much.
ha
I'll say it for you Lisa,
Good riddance!
damn
some people are so fvcked up
i wonder what happened in his life that made him think the way he did
May Jerry finally see God doesn't make mistakes.
Upon hearing about Jerry Falwell passing I finally said, Now Mr. Falwell you will see what heaven really is. He'll find it full of every make of woman, man, and child. God never made a mistake, ever. In order for us to know love we have had to feel it's ugly opposite. Every person has served a purpose and though Mr. Falwell may never have realized he served more for the gay community then he ever knew. He helped unite us. Yes, he brought forth discussions of how we must stand and scream from the rooftops, pride festivals, blogs, etc. that we are here, have been here from the start and that we love, we have families and most importantly God doesn't make mistakes. God didn't make a mistake when I came into this world, nor did God make one when you enter this existance. I've made a difference in this world, I'm a Mother, a Grandmother and I given this world a son who knows no hatred and through him and his wonderful wife, their children will know no hatred, nor will they judge the labels others are given.
" Life is not about finding yourself, it's about creating yourself."
"Real love is seeing the other person's insanity and agreeing to live there with them."
this was a beautiful response.

My almost Alma Mater
In the mid 1980’s I was waiting for replies to my applications for graduate school. I was stunned when I received a reply from what was then known as “Liberty Baptist College.” In a letter, signed by Jerry Falwell, the school said they were pleased with my application and even more pleased to accept me.
I was so incensed that I brought the letter to school and let all of my friends see it. While they passed the letter around I let loose with a tirade of quite colorful language of what I thought of him and his twisted views on theocracy. I kept trying to figure out how they even knew my name.
After letting me go on for over an hour, my friend Brian finally confessed that he had sent the letter. He roomed with a guy at debate camp the previous summer and swiped some letterheads.
Everyone was in on it. Apparently they all knew I would go ballistic. I loved the joke so much that I had the letter framed and after I graduated, displayed it in my office with my diplomas.

My Father
My father was the head of administrative computing at Liberty University (Jerry Falwell's college) for 11 years. We lived in Lynchburg, VA (Where J.F.'s church and college are located) for around 12 years, we even went to his church. After watching my dad work under him for so long and be fired under him I have got to say, from first hand experience, that he was a vile person. However he was still a person that deserved life just like anyone else. Believe me, I do not like the man and I have a many negative feelings towards him, but I don't think we should mock or celebrate anyones death. I think us doing that is just playing into the stereotype that "gays" are evil. We should be the "bigger man" and do what a "smaller" man like Jerry would've never been able to do, mourn the loss of a human life despite the differences between us. Let's show that the stereotypes are wrong!
Please don't ask me to mourn for this man to prove I am a bigger
Please don't ask me to mourn for this man to prove I am a bigger "man." (I'm a woman by the way)...
I would never wish for anyone's death, but I don't feel a need to mourn in this case either.
You can mourn the loss, as you knew him.
In general I don't tend to feel an honest sense of mourning unless I've known a person, or if the person truly effected positive change in the world in some way that I feel a deep personal passionate belief in.
I don't intend to sound mocking, but I won't feel less anger toward him because he has passed away then I did when he was alive.
I don't know why I went off, but I found your comment a bit preachy.
CNN
They've been showing a video of an interview with him from last week. Said he was asking God for like 20 more years or something.... Obviously he didn't have as much pull as he thought he did
You know, I am a loving, peaceful person.. but this man made my jaw drop and skin crawl with his hateful, hurtful words....
Hate is Easy, Hate Sells
As long as Americans tune-in there will be another wing nut wrapped in the Bible to take his place. I agree it's better to not to take part in circulating Falwell’s hate by reposting is comments; good on you Devil's Advocate and Lisa.
It will be interesting in the coming days to see what kind of revisionist history begins to emerge from the press and our “leaders” in Washington. The Republicans prepping for the debate had this to say: http://blogs.wsj.com/washwire/2007/05/15/republicans-mourn-falwell/track.... I got an extra special laugh from Mike Huckabee’s comment about how Falwell “never lost his common touch” and “his humanity and compassion for people from all walks of life.”. Gee maybe you should post more of Falwell’s diatribes Lisa!
Revisionist History
You are absolutely right.
The same crap happened when Reagan died. All over the news they were replaying his clever comment when people asked about how his talk with Desmond Tutu went. Clever Ronnie responded, "so so."
Every time someone mentioned that quote, I wondered if I was the only one that remembered the context:
Tuto had come to talk to Reagan about the need for the US to STOP supporting the racist apartheid government of South Africa. Reagan refused to do that. The news folks left that part out while nominating him for sainthood.
>> It will be interesting in the coming days to see what kind of revisionist history begins to emerge from the press and our “leaders” in Washington."

b-bye hatemonger!
my tinky winky doll is so happy he's running around humping the furniture.
“It's a precision tool, Phyllis. If you're gonna be a lesbian, you're gonna have to get to know your toolkit.” -Bette
not worth it
To be honest he is not worth my anger or hate....why spread around a disease that he so willingly passed on to so many.
But neither do I feel sorrow....he has hurt to many....not just all my sisters.....(as you all are) but Afro Americans, Jews..etc etc.......he seemed to have and unending list.
I think my feeling about his death is that I don't feel anything. And that is sad for him ...to say that his life was so ho hum to me that it provokes nothing.
Ok maybe that last statement is false because I do hope he rests in peace and that he has found out that God is not only a woman......but a lesbian and that she is makeing him watch the first 4 seasons of the L Word......and all of QAF.
:::GOOD RIDDANCE:::
sorry for his fam....but FUCK THAT PUTO!!!!!

HERE HERE
I COULD NOT AGREE MORE!!!!
we can't afford to celebrate
Falwell's death. It's wrong. Several previous posts have mentioned the fact that he has followers. I'm sure they will pick up where Falwell left off. I would never wish the abuse and discrimination we feel as homosexuals wished on anyone--not even Falwell. When I was in college one of my friends told me only white people could be racist and I said "Bullshit". Homosexuals can't feel justified in hating conservative christians. Hate is wrong. No matter who hates and who is hated. As a pagan, I believe I should travel my path in the most gentle and kind manner as possible because everything comes back around. Falwell is paying for his sins. And thank the Spirits I don't have to be his judge.
Hate for anyone to Kick The Bucket!
Oh well, what can you say? Always anger in religion
I try to stay outta church & and away from the whole
God VS Satan thing.Angry preachers screaming,
gives me Panic Attacks & a Bad Headache...lol!
Anybody got a Valium? : ) Yummy!
God vs Satan... seeing plus adhering, does not equal faith.
"I try to stay outta church & and away from the whole
God VS Satan thing"
Here Here! I hear ya, I try to stay well away from anyone that preaches "faith" on the one hand and holds a rulebook based solely on this faith in the other. Might as well admit that they make the rules up as they go along. I don't like following hidden rules.
Gotta have faith
Dear God,
Please protect us from Your followers.
eh
good riddance
I don't want to turn this
I don't want to turn this into a predictable, mean-spirited "Good riddance" type of blog post - LISA
With the greatest respect, Lisa, if you post more of this man's irrational diatribes, that's exactly what this thread will turn into ! He's dead and his homophobic opinions have died with him. Let it stay that way.
In any event, we're still left with his sycophantic followers who will doubtless be espousing their "beloved leader's" views until they also draw their last breath.
==========================================
> All this ... and brains too ! <
I agree..
What I am really worried about is if some of his followers will go postal in his honor. If they do, it will be the gay community that will be the target.

re: I don't want...
Point taken, Devil. See update above.
Also, click here for an interesting take on Falwell's death, by another lesbian blogger...
Hey, She Devil!
Nice Point! Very well put.
Yep
I agree.
I Agree, Too
My mother said that if I don't have anything nice to say-.
If you don't have anything nice to say
"If you don't have anything nice to say, come sit by me." (quoting Alice Roosevelt Longworth).
Good one, Rstipati
Appropriate quote. I read about the prank, above, that happened when your friends tried to enroll you ar Liberty. That's hysterical!

ignorance is noy bliss
i never get "happy" when someone is dies but i am glad that he died. I mean sure, he probably was a nice guy to people who knew and loved him but his ideas are the reason why in some parts of the world we as a community must hide for fear of attack (physical or emotional). It angers me that people like this are aloud to run around and preach hate and indirectly incite hateful responses upon the gay and lesbian community. These are the same ideas behind the sorrowful beating and death of Matthew Sheperd. Am I heart broken at all? No. I hope in his next life he is gay and gets hated by people like him. And yes Mr. Farwell, I am a lesbian and a pagan but I know my life did not make those nut cases crash into buildings.
i figure right now jerry has his hand over his mouth
and his first thing he is saying to god is...
"holy shit! you're a woman?????"
the second thing he is saying is....
"i think i really fucked up down there...i said some crazy stuff...i spread fear and judgement...i didn't use love as my teacher or guide...oh crap."
and god will have him sit down and watch all the gay movies we've had through time, all the gay shows...and then it's dinner with everyone gay...and probably some drag queen will sit in his lap and sing i will survive to him...and because god is love, he will be forgiven forgive forgiven...

blue balls coming through
Yeah, and then "god" will pull off his mask saying sikeeee, welcome to hell. You wanted to spend your life on the backs of the homosexuals to keep them beneath you, now you can spend eternity watching them. Oh yeah, with your hands tied. None of that ringing the bologna stuff for you!
rovermom :)
Life is a 3D puzzle and everyone has a piece! :)
to add
Then after Jerry's hands are tied...a mischievious wink comes from Satan himself in Jerry's direction...and he says "So I heard you've been using my name a lot....you must really like me!"....
Whatever Happens, Happens!
