Yes We Can!

My gf and a friend and I went from NY and volunteered in PA for Obama yesterday, so we listened to Obama's speech in tears on our way back into NYC!!!! It's the most amazing thing I've ever felt a part of.... the only other moments that have been so overwhelming in my life (for better and worse) were being a part of the 1993 LGBT March on Washington, and then the tragedy of September 11th..... I would feel nothing but tears of joy if it weren't for the results of the amendments on gay marriage... to feel so much hope and idealism return and such a let down is overwhelming.... I will try to stay hopeful though and remember that we are still moving closer and must continue to fight:

Platform of the 1993 March on Washington for
Lesbian, Gay, and Bi Equal Rights and Liberation
Action Statement Preamble to the Platform

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender movement recognizes that our quest
for social justice fundamentally links us to the struggles against racism
and sexism, class bias, economic injustice and religious intolerance. We
must realize if one of us is oppressed we all are oppressed. The diversity of
our movement requires and compels us to stand in opposition to all forms of
oppression that diminish the quality of life for all people. We will be
vigilant in our determination to rid our movement and our society of all forms
of oppression and exploitation, so that all of us can develop to our full
human potential without regard to race, religion, sexual orientation,
identification, identity, gender and gender expression, ability, age or class.

THE MARCH DEMANDS
1. We demand passage of a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender civil
rights bill and an end to discrimination by state and federal governments
including the military; repeal of all sodomy laws and other laws that
criminalize private sexual expression between consenting adults.

2. We demand massive increase in funding for AIDS education, research,
and patient care; universal access to health care including alternative
therapies; and an end to sexism in medical research and health care.

3. We demand legislation to prevent discrimination against Lesbians,
Gays, Bisexuals and Transgendered people in the areas of family diver-
sity, custody, adoption and foster care and that the definition of family
includes the full diversity of all family structures.

4. We demand full and equal inclusion of Lesbians, Gays, Bisexuals and
Transgendered people in the educational system, and inclusion of Les-
bian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender studies in multicultural curricula.

5. We demand the right to reproductive freedom and choice, to control
our own bodies, and an end to sexist discrimination.

6. We demand an end to racial and ethnic discrimination in all forms.

7. We demand an end to discrimination and violent oppression based on
actual or perceived sexual orientation, identification, race, religion, iden-
tity, sex and gender expression, disability, age, class, AIDS/HIV infection.

Congratulations!!!

I'm more then happy with this result!
We watched CNN all night and after they called it we finally believed it.
I hope that he is able to let the world heal and make the change we all need.

I hope so too!

I am truly astounded

at level of support and dare I say - love- shown by all of you outside the U.S. Your heartfelt congratulations has touched me on a personal level. I am amazed at your capacity to look ahead, if not forgive us for the past 8 years. We thank you for your support and unfailing trust that we would eventually do the right thing.

Last night I had such pride

Last night I had such pride in our country for its truly amazing achievement. I am, though, saddened this morning by the rough night for lgbt issues, and as a 40 year old person I recognize that change is slow to come, so I feel that sadness today. Lots of emotions.

a new chapter in world history...

We hold these truths to be self-evident:
#1. Obama IS President.

This is change, not just for America, but for the world.

Congrats from Canada

Bittersweet

It's so nice to sign on and see all of the positive comments from our friends around the world. This is indeed historic. This is a wonderful thing for our country and the world. Like some, I never gave up on the American people. I knew we would do the right thing.

Yet, like Meffle and CA Medicine woman said...it's not over. It's just the beginning. Proposition 8 has passed, proving that homophobia is still rampant in America. We have so many things to fix. It's time to get real and time to get busy.

Ohio

Peacekitty, please thank Ohio for me. Smile.

We're blue!

Done. :) We really are euphoric here in Ohio. My co-workers and friends are all beaming with delight and hope. We have so much work to do though to fix all of these problems. Thank goodness we now have an energetic, positive and gentle leader to keep us all inspired.

word.

Peace

Yes, Yes, Yes!

A new day, a new time, possibility has arrived!!!

Obama wins, but so does hate

Sen. Barack Obama (D-IL) has won both the popular and electoral votes by a clear majority.

Unfortunately, so has homophobia.

In California, Proposition 8 has passed by about 350,000 votes, wit 92% of voting completed. There aren't enough votes still to be counted remaining to defeat it. Almost half of Democrats voted in favor of Prop 8, and nearly all Republicans. The passage of the proposition based upon the wording, places a constitutional ban on official recognition of non-heterosexual marriages, and voids the estimated 12,000 plus marriages of same-sex couples that were married between last summer's ruling on the unconstitutional nature of Prop 22. and yesterday. Much of the Democratic support for Prop 8 was largely due to the lack of opposition by Sen. Barbara Boxer (D) and Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D). The only federal level Democrat to publically opposed the bill was Sen. Dianne Feinstien.

In Florida, a constitutional amendment passed that bans recognition of same sex relationships, and bans recognition of heterosexual civil unions (limiting recognition to only those heterosexual relationships sanctioned by whichever religious sect(s) hold majority power).

Second time appears to be the charm for Arizona, which voted by majority to amend their constitution to ban same-sex marriage. Unlike 2006 (and this year in Florida), this effort did not include a ban on civil unions of any kind. Look for this in 2010.

In Arkansas, the religious right pressed forward their agenda with a successful constitutional amendment drive that limits adoptions and foster care to heterosexual married couples only. Arkansas has previously passed a constitutional amendment banning same-sex marriages. Church leaders have vowed to pass a ban that would strip away parental rights of LGBT parents in 2010.

I understand that many want to rejoice over the neocons' defeat at the voting booth. I really hate to be the downer here, but despite Grace's claims that this is over, it isn't. You will find that this fight is only just beginning. Now, you need to keep an eye on those who work for you, your views, and your values. Hold their feet to the fire.

A Shadow

I'm excited about all the good things that have happened but I'm with you, the total loss for gay rights is such an overwhelming shadow for me that I can't think right now.

I think also Obama wasn't loud enough in his opposition. Of course he opposed it merely because it was a constitutional ban, and not because he is for gay marriage, which might have played a part in his not speaking up more. I'm glad Obama will be president, trust me, but I wish he'd be willing to do more actively for us.

Luckily in California the margin is close enough to prove that it isn't over. And the fact that Obama was elected president give me hope that someday it will be true that all people will have equal rights.

Congratulations

Congratulations from Scotland! X

So Happy

About Obama winning. I am looking forward to change. Still waiting to hear the results of prop 8.

Prop 8 neck and neck - it's almost midnight PST

It's close, but so far still. It's like New Years Eve in the bay tonight. Right now there are parties all over the streets of San Francisco. The election parties began in homes and after Obama spoke everyone took to the streets to celebrate.
Did anyone notice that Obama included the gays in his speech?
Even if we loose Prop 8 tonight, we will win it soon!
There'll be video soon about this historical night. Stay tuned.

www.hotsituationtv.com

did you see the yes on 8 guy claiming victory?

It's just after 12:15 now and they figure they got it. The friends who were here with me to party for Obama left an hour or so ago and now, I'm just sitting here waiting on 8. Might as well give it up.

CNN's exit polls

have it DEFEATED 53 to 47--did people lie about how they voted??

Evidently so

Either that or they didn't poll in podunk, redneck Calif. It really is two states--LA and the bay area being mostly social progressives and even in highly populated so. cal counties--San diego, Orange county, maybe even san bernardino, etc.--there is a large conservative population. Given the odd distribution of demographics here, I'm not surprised they got their numbers off by such a wide margin.

Here, in the rural county where I live, the vote went 50.2 percent yes and 49.8 percent no, a mere 670 vote difference. Even though this is a largely repub. county, people did vote more toward no than yes here.
Lezbeth

HELL YA YOU CAN!!

I am from SOuth Africa and I want to tell all you Americans...I am so happy...and so proud of all of you for standing up and making that change...Now your next crucial vote...VOTE NO ON PROP8...Go do it NOW!!!!

Too late

It passed. It's going to be up to the federal supreme court now. If they overturn this law, a lot of people in the US are going to be royally pissed off.

I've been out for 35 years and among the hated for that long. Although I've gotten used to it, every time the major population reminds me of that, it makes me sick and sad.
Lezbeth

wayhey!

Finally America! Congratulations and lets see Obama make history.

YES!

From France

We are so proud of what you just did America !!!

Anna XXX love from France !

Thank you

We love you too. One of the friends who was at my party last night said that this vote has the significance of the French revolution when people around the world stood up and cheered.
