Attention L.A.: Rally for Prop 8 Tonight!

Thanks to JD for passing along this announcement. If any readers have info on Prop 8 protests taking place in other California cities tonight, please let us know about them in the comments.

We need to be seen. We need to be counted.

Please, like myself, cancel your plans tonight and come to be seen and counted for all the news crews and our community to see that we shall not be overlooked.

As deeply disappointed as we all are that California voters passed Proposition 8, we must not allow that disappointment to linger. This vote is a temporary defeat in the long march toward equal rights for all citizens in America.

Please join us for a protest rally tonight at 7 p.m. on San Vicente Blvd. between West Hollywood Park and the Pacific Design Center (647 N. San Vicente Blvd., West Hollywood, CA 90069) as we move forward toward restoring equality for all in California.

San Vicente Blvd. between Santa Monica Blvd. and Melrose Avenue will be closed tonight starting at 6 p.m. San Vicente southbound traffic will be directed to make a left or right at Santa Monica Blvd. Signs have already been posted to help divert traffic.

Update! Equality California has announced these additional Prop 8 gatherings happening throughout the state tonight:

Modesto 7 p.m.| Stanislaus Pride Center Silent walk to Graceada Park

Sacramento 5 p.m. | Capitol Steps

San Diego 6:30 p.m. | The Center 3909 Centre Street Co-sponsored by the Center, EQCA and HRC

San Luis Obispo 5:30 p.m. | Mission Plaza Amphitheater

San Francisco 6:30 p.m. | City Hall 1 Dr. Carlton B. Goodlett Place

I don't know if this will actually do anything, but it wouldn't hurt to do it.

WeHo

West Hollywood was AMAZING last night. The most inspiring and moving thing I have EVER taken place in. Walked 10 miles, did two sit-ins, it was the best thing in the world! We need to get out and show our voices. There will be a march in Long Beach, tomorrow, Friday, November 7, 2008. We are starting at Redondo and Broadway, going down Broadway to Atlantic and then partying at Hamburger Marys. It starts at 7pm. Bring everyone you know, bring your pride, SIGNS!!! and FLAGS!!! Dont forget your water! It should be just as amazing as last night in WeHo!

Thanks for the post! I saw

Thanks for the post! I saw this, and left my house 5 minutes after seeing it. I went to the one in San Diego and I'm glad I did.

What about the violence in LA?

I had to work late or I would have been at the candle light vigil in San Francisco with everyone. I came home around 10 and my local SF news is showing the peaceful candle light vigil in SF and this clip of the LA cops beating up some guy.
Rodney King style. 3 cops, batons and the guy was already down on the ground, under control and they are kicking him in the stomach. My first thought and fear is they are using this rally as an excuse to beat up a "faggot." Once he's down on the ground, you can stop kicking him in the stomach now, Hello!. What happened over there? Is my news doing the dramatic news thing?

"WTF"

How can we as Americans on one hand elect a black president but disallow gays to marry. Am I to believe we are no longer racists , but we are still bigots. Discrimination in any form is a crime against humanity. I can not relish in the joy of the first black president while my fellow brother and sisters suffer such a devastating setback. As a black woman living in America , I must say that I am ashame of some of the citizen of this country. I'm tired of people having to beg for acceptance and inclusion. Again I continue to hang my head in shame for a nation of people who just can't seem to get it right. Taking baby steps is no longer an option. The United States of Hypocrisy is where I live.

Thanks for saying this

Yesterday, while so many people around me were elated by Obama's election, I was really down (a little today, too). I questioned whether it was out of my own unconscious racism and that maybe I was pouting and dismissing something so important by asking why he won and we didn't. I guess people can continue to justify some forms of bigotry (including toward African American people) while congratulating themselves on growing past other forms. It's the nationwide self-congratulation that worries me. I doubt that bigotry or the condemnation of various forms of otherness will end anytime soon. Don't get me wrong, I'm so relieved to have such an intelligent, graceful man (and his family) in the white house, but the sting of the other loss is still there.
Lezbeth

Amen!

Keep your head up. Once again, our nation shows that we as a nation don't remember the struggles & lessons learned from our past. We're supposed to learn from our past mistake to make sure that no one is wronged again.

I know you're tired. We all are. But I'm not going to make excuses for people's ignorance & save "live & let live". Our rights have been taken away, & if someone is crazy enough to celebrate the passage of prop 8 around me, you best believe my voice will be heard & my argument strong. We ARE everywhere, we are NOT deviant, & we are just as good or bad as the rest of society.

Enough is enough.

I hope somebody got some

I hope somebody got some good footage of the protest. I saw a bit on CNN; they showed the march in the street and the man who jumped on the police car. I wish I could have been there to join in the sit-in! Lisa, did you get pictures or video?

Nevermind, just saw the blog....

Couldn't go, but there in spirit

I'm about 30min away from WeHo, but I didn't go. Between Prop 8 passing & Obama's election, I've gotten that extra oomph to hit the books really hard & prepare for the last leg (6wks) of the semester. My heart was out there with them & I was honking my horn during my travels throughout the day whenever I saw No on 8 Bumper Stickers or signs.

What really pissed me off last night is Sonja Eddings-Brown, CEO for Yes on 8 got on TV last night & said basically that the people had spoken & why are they (you know, us gays & our supporters) going to challenge the will of the people?

Well, I thought that was interesting coming from her side, since there is NO DOUBT that if 8 was defeated, the Yes Side would be challenging the ruling the same way we are now.

And the more conservative part of my in-laws want to know why I don't go to church. I'm not going somewhere that I am not wanted, do not feel comfortable, & deal with hypocrites.

When in the heck did it become ok to put an amendment into the constitution that challenges the equality clause within the constitution?

The Three Estates

One of the things I keep hearing is "how did those activist judges change something that the people voted in?" People here are so undereducated in political science. They don't understand that the role of the judiciary is to protect the rights of those who would not have enough voters to prevail in a democratic vote to protect their rights. If the majority can establish laws to deprive some people of their basic rights, think of all of the bad laws that would continue to be on the books, even those that would have prevented Barack Obama from getting equal access to education or his parents from living as a married couple in many states. The founding fathers established an independent estate (aside from the president and the legislature) to enforce the constitution by applying its principles to laws that are not in keeping with its basic philosophies. That IS the Supreme Courts' (state and federal) role.

The people may have spoken, but they forget that we have a judiciary that is charged with making sure the majority doesn't, through legislation or popular vote, oppress a smaller segment of the population that could never prevail through voting alone.
Lezbeth

Something that worries me about the California Supremes

They have to stand for retention votes 12 years after they are selected to serve. I hate the idea of the mob voting for justices as well as amending the constitution.

In 1986, California voters threw out Chief Justice Rose Bird and Associate Justices Cruz Reynoso and Joseph Grodin. All three were progressive; they pissed people off because they were opposed to capital punishment.

That's true

I forgot about that. At least there's the federal level. Hopefully, Obama will make a couple of appointments while he is still prez. That, too, has become a politically charged process and not free from conservative or progressive leanings. Hopefully, though, they are not appointed based on one particular issue. Yes, Roe vs Wade has been a huge consideration over the last few fed appointments, but the justices in theory anyway are not running for office.

i was there

i was there too. the rally was very inspirational and it really felt like a revolution. hopefully we can keep it up. they are rallying at the mormon church tomorrow, which i think is awesome and hilarious. those mormons aren't going to know what hit them. i can't make it, but my boss said he's going. i left after marching for a bit, but when i was leaving police cars and fire engines were racing there. i would love to know what happen. my roommate said she saw on the news that there were 3 arrests. i wonder what happened. it was very peaceful and non-confrontational while i was there.

i went to the west hollywood

i went to the west hollywood protest. there was thousands of people. it was very therapeutic and i feel less aggro and much more determined to fight this.

we walked quite a bit and left before everyone else did but from what i hear it got violent? as we were driving down santa monica on our way home i saw a truck with 15 swat looking officers on the back of the truck going back towards the protest.

It's hard not to lose faith

It's hard not to lose faith in people. It's wrong.

im so sad

i called my "father" who lives in california (where i was born) cause i live in mexico and i hate to say... he turned his back on me... he was my only chance to be abble to fight for this from where i am... and he said "i support you, but i cant vote no" with a tear in my face i hunged up after trying to convince him we all deserve the same rights... i havent talked to him again, but i get the feeling i did not change his mind...
i feel so sad now... because its not just california, like this newpaper i read today it said "So no assurance. But some provisional hope.(when we did not have a resulution yet) If marriage endures in California, this debate is over - in America and the world."
its totally right... the world see things and then moves along with them..
but above all theres still a fighter in me...

bittersweet

just got home from the rally in west hollywood. it was bittersweet because it was very powerful seeing all the supporters but sad to see that we were all out there because prop 8 passed : (

THANK YOU, fighters!

Thank you all for your work. People fear what they do not understand. Straight people will never understand the kind of anguish we feel. Of I don't know - the initial confusion... to acceptance... then to perhaps a long road to equality. Of convincing people that we're just like everyone else. Don't give up yet.

The cup is half full, not half empty. 48% of the people voted No on Prop 8. I see it as a huge improvement. Only 400K people to convince. Best thing to do is to get on with our lives as normal and in love as possible - until people realize that they've nothing to be afraid of.

DON´T BE SAD ABOUT PROP 8 CAUSE THEY CAN´T TAKEOUR FEELINGS

IM STRAIGHT IM MEMBER TO OURCHAR WHEN I FINISHED TO WATCH L WORD THANKS I OPENNED MY EYES DONT BE ANGRY AND SAD SOME PEOPLE DON´T UNDERSTAND FEELINGS I HOPE THAT SOMEDAY WE COULD BE BROTHERS AND SISTER EQUAL CAUSE WE ARE SON OF GOD
I LIKE TO SAY THAT SOME TIMES GAY PEOPLE IS RACIST TOO LIKE IF THE STRAIGHT PEOPLE WERE ENEMYS. IF SOMEBODY READ MY COMMENT I WOULD LIKE TO TELL YOU THAT THIS FIGHT IS STARTING BUT THIS FIGHT ITS FOR THE GAYS AND THE STRAIGHTS TOO, EVERYBODY DESERVE TO LIVE IN FREEDOM, OUT IGNORANCE,FIGHT, PLEASE FIGHT WITH DIGNITY AND IF THE IGNORANCE CONTINUE KEEP FIGHTING THAT SOMEDAY GOD MAKE JUSTICE AND I HOPE THAT MY EYES WILL SEE A BEATIFULL DAY FULL OF PEACE LOVE AND FREEDOM

Here's another one

church and state,gay marriage

I didn't drive out to the other church where people voted in this county. There are at least 3 in a county with only 63,000 voters. One of the largest evangelical churches in Sacramento is also a voting place. I wonder what would have happened if people voted in less evocative locations.

If anyone doubts that polling places affect the outcome of elections, a professor named Jonah Berger (with others) researched and published a paper titled "Cotextual Priming: where people vote affects how they vote." The paper can be viewed here:

Lezbeth

What's wrong with this picture?

gay marriage,church and state

This is a still frame from some video I took yesterday. I've raised my concerns about polling places at churches (particularly with Prop 8 on the ballot here in Calif). None of the following organizations saw it as a problem: NCLR, ACLU or Lambda Legal. Doesn't this bother anyone else?

I hope others can use this picture for blogs or publications dealing with the outcome of Prop 8.
Lezbeth

church and state

We ought to offer up our GLBT centers as polling places.

Yes

Whenever I talked to people about this and they poo-pooed it, saying, it's no big deal, people know how they are going to vote, etc., I asked whether those who opposed gay marriage would vote at LGBT centers, the person stopped and usually said, no. Actually, that represents no conflict of church and state, where this, well, the picture says it all.
Lezbeth

If they don't come...

it just may skew the vote in a favorable way. I'm all for it. ;)

my polling place was at a

my polling place was at a christian church

it's a horror film

you know i'd like to like God but it's tough sometimes. ditto the u.s. flag. this is awful, creepy, and awful creepy.

Just in case you wanted to know

Here's the news story about this branch of the Lutheran church's position on the whole marriage thing.

Creepy? Yes indeedy.

BBC News 24 in the UK have

BBC News 24 in the UK have shown news coverage regarding the Prop 8 issue, so if protests are going to happen, and they make noise and are captured by news crews, this could really reach people all over.

Good luck! Keep fighting,
x.

WE LOST THIS BATTLE, BUT WE WILL WIN THE WAR!

DO NOT BE SILENCED.

FIGHT THE RESISTANCE.

FIGHT WITH EVERYTHING YOU HAVE.

NOT FOR US, BUT FOR ALL OF THOSE PEOPLE WHOSE LIVES WILL BE BETTER BECAUSE WE MANAGED TO CHANGE SOMETHING, FOR ALL THOSE PEOPLE LIKE US THAT COME AFTER US...

FIGHT.

LOVE IS ALWAYS THE ANSWER - SO THAT MAKES ME A WARRIOR FOR LOVE!

will be at the l.a.

will be at the l.a. location!

I wish I lived in Calfiornia to fight the good fight with all of

you but those of us in other states need to do the same...I am here in Florida and originaly from Mass clearly now I know why I am here...we have a lot of work to do but we will succeed. We are determined to fight the fight...

Stand Strong California the world is looking at you and we here at OC support you 100% of the way. Our time will come.....

LONG LIVE TIBETTE: That is my STORY and I am sticking to it !!

"I did not "win." I was not fast. But I succeeded. I succeeded because I was able to keep my mind calm in moments of adversity. I succeeded because, quite simply, I persevered."
~Jennifer

If a plane could get me there in time - I would be there!

I am so upset, angry, unsettled.

How dare these people make me question where I fit into this world again?!

I agree with you Lucia_2008 - protest with dignity and for goodness sake nobody wear a stupid COSTUME!

I would also add - be strong, staunch and SHOUT. The days of being a quiet lesbian listening politely to the other side, should be over! Straight people need to GET that this law is unacceptable.

All we have heard in the last 24 hours, is News readers harping on about "all of us really are created equal now" - "look - we have a black President" ... completely ignoring that there is a large group of people who are feeling blatantly discriminated against today.

Protest on my behalf please.

so with you in spirit...

wish I could be there to stand shoulder to shoulder in solidarity with my brothers and sisters on the left coast...
Peace

Our support is with you...

remember to protest peacefully and with dignity. Put shame upon those who deny others freedom.

Like the Whos down in Whoville

Fuck the Grinch!

Let them hear all of our voices!!

Yes. In spirit. So wishing

Yes. In spirit.

So wishing I could be there. Wishing I there was something here in Chicago as well. I'm also shocked that other glbt people do not know about this event when I thought everyone knew. Maybe we really need to educate our own community first.

:-/

You said it correctly...

educate our own community first. Then our community will educate the world!

i wish i could be there.

but i will in spirit. lets keep our chin up!!!

Those on the east coast

Will be there in spirit!!!

Rock it Left Coast

!

It ain't over

The ACLU and others have filed suits already.

The ACLU suit says, Prop 8 eliminated "a fundamental right from just one group – lesbian and gay Californians." They are going to argue that to take away a fundamental right, you cannot just "amend" the constitution with a simple majority. The constitution must be "revised" by a Constitutional convention.

"A major purpose of the constitution is to protect minorities from majorities. Because changing that principle is a fundamental change to the organizing principles of the constitution itself, only the legislature can initiate such revisions to the constitution," added Elizabeth Gill, a staff attorney with the ACLU of Northern California.

I have no idea the chances of the lawsuit, but it's clear that they were ready to go with this.

"A major purpose of the constitution is to protect minorities from majorities." thanks, Rusty for your comment, for me this quote just says it.

"Love is a pebble laughing in the sun"

i really don't know how it

i really don't know how it could have been on the ballot to begin with. and i wonder if the ACLU would have kept going with their lawsuit, even if the proposition would have been defeated?

rovermom :)

There was a suit to keep it off the ballot

I believe that the same "amend" vs "revise" argument was used before the election. The court ruled to keep it on the ballot, but made it clear that they would hear the same argument if the amendment passed.
