Are you feeling more excitement or anxiety about the fact that you will soon be shedding the winter layers and bearing it all for us to see at the pool or the beach? Swim Season is right around the corner, especially for those of us migrating to Palm Springs next week for
Dinah Shore weekend.
I started thinking about how, in seven days, I may have to bear my pale, over-worked, under-exercised flesh to the delegates of Lesbo Land as they flock to the porcelain pools for the annual mating call. Sure, I have the excuse of staying at my tent selling clothes all weekend at Dinah (which is an excellent reason why you won’t see me lingering poolside in a bikini)… but what about you?
With that question in mind, I did a little investigating to see what is happening in swimsuit trends and what kind of swim gear is available for those of us who either don’t want to expose that much flesh to the world or because we are more comfortable with androgynous or masculine gender expression in fashion.
COOLEST SWIM TREND: 007. Bond, James Bond.
James Bond girls are always hanging out in their bathing suits.
Lately, I’ve been listening to a lot of online radio while I work, especially this channel called
Secret Agent that plays James Bond-esque music. I was listening to this as I started to do my research on swim gear for us queer girls. I started to imagine hundreds of hot lezzies lounging around the pools of a fancy resort, wearing 1960s-inspired bathing suits, reminiscent of the early James Bond movies. So I Googled “James Bond swimwear." Turns out, it is one of the hottest trends for 2008. Call me psychic.
PUSSY GALORES GIRLS:
For those of us who enjoy expressing our femininity, the hot, retro 60s cut-out bathing suit trend is back. It’s great because you get all the sex appeal of showing flesh in all the right places while still maintaining the coverage of a one-piece bathing suit. My favorite suits are from Target, Betsey Johnson and Diesel. This cut-out bathing suit look is inspired by the brilliant pioneer in swimsuit design, Rudi Gernreich:

JAMES BOND LEZZIES:
For those of you who prefer swim trunks to bathing suits, the swim trunks worn in the latest James Bond film directly inspire this year’s hottest trends:
The La Perla Grigioperla swim trunks are flying off the shelves.
Although long, billowy board shorts will always be a popular swim option, the newest trend is towards short, retro swim trunks. I found some great styles by D-Squared and Volcom.
Sak’s Fifth Avenue’s online store has a great selection of both women's and men’s swimsuits right now.
MOST FLATTERING PRINT: CHECKS
Though hibiscus floral prints will always be the classic choice for swimwear print and pattern, I’m digging how flattering checks and plaids can be for a lot of body types. I especially love the checkered board shorts and suits that Quicksilver, Volcom and Target are dishing up this season.
BIKINIS ARE NOT THE ONLY FRUIT (OR TWO-PIECE SUIT):
Fortunately for anybody who loves the convenience that a two-piece suit gives them (especially when mother nature is calling at the beach) but are not comfortable sporting a bikini — we have options.
THE TANKINI:
The tankini has the support and coverage of a one-piece with the added convenience of a bikini. I love these styles available at Victoria’s Secret, especially the prints that have an African or Indian feel to them. Rawr!
The bad-ass women on TYR’s homepage.
A more butch version of a tankini, with the high performance support and power of true athletic swimwear, can be found at
TYR. You can get all sorts of amazing, durable swim tanks, bottoms and one-pieces at this store.
Streamlined tank tops and bottoms at TYR.
For those of you who are planning to smugly parade your tanned and toned bodies around in dental floss during Dinah Shore weekend — please make sure to stop by my booth and say hello. For the rest of us, I hope I’ve provided some ideas for ways we can all enjoy swimsuit season without having to succumb to the pressures of the bikini.
I hope to see lots of you this weekend. Bikini or not, stop by and tell me what’s on your mind when it comes to queer women, fashion and what you wish was available for you out in the world.

tankinis
tankinis rival skorts in terms of dorkiness. that black belted thing is fucking amazing. it's like dominatrix swimwear.
Seriously?
I'm loving the tankinis available right now--it's like wearing a one-piece except it's a hell of a lot easier to pee when you are at the beach.
"it's like dominatrix
"it's like dominatrix swimwear." lol
i want spring hic et nunc !
Explain...
...this picture. I'm curious and fascinated by it.
Hi Parisait's one of my top
Hi Parisa
it's one of my top bikini, i printed it with latin words "Hic" and "nunc" on each boobs, wich mean "Here" and "now"
(and as in Paris we got only rain (wich is good for plants) and clouds i add "I want Spring")
here you are :-))
You. Are. Brilliant.
Hic and Nunc
Thank you Parisa i will tell
Thank you Parisa i will tell them both in your name ;-)
Swimwear choices
Parisa, thanks for all of your great suggestions. The cut-out is hot (for someone else, more femme than I am).
I work out, but some over 50 things happen regardless. Last year it was board shorts with a sports bra-style top (let's the girls appreciate the girls). Your swim trunk suggestion is great. May be that'll be the direction for this year. I would stay away from that style of tank tops because they cover too much. A woman needs to play to her strengths. We all have them. An extra day or two at the gym each week always boosts my confidence.

the displayed swimdresses
are perfectly suitable for the non-modellike-shapes among us i think. sure they look great on models too, as the pics show. as i have a rather bondesque body than what appears to be slim these days, i guess I'll go for these styles :) now i only need someone to sponsor me a ticket from europe to dinah..
"The only way to get rid of a temptation is to yield to it." Oscar Wilde
Neither am I.
It's hard to find pics from swim labels that use anything other than slim, fit models.
My intention with this blog was to give folks options other than a bikini to wear to the beach---options that have more coverage and/or support. I'd love to know of some swim brands that either cater to a larger range of body sizes or use models that aren't all slim and fit. If anyone can point in me in the right direction, I'd appreciate it.
i was out on the beach today
i was out on the beach today in my super cute striped j crew bikini, and damn did it feel good.
Boy Shorts & Bikini Top
La Perla & Volcoms(boy shorts) are such my way to go, with a bikini top. A little masculine yet femme. I'm petrified for my trip to Mexico for Pride in front of all the boys i'm playing for. I'm not ready for swimsuit season yet! eeekk Have yourself some fun @ DS in Palm Springs, which I know you will!!!!!
Be a Hair God!
I was wondering what sort of
I was wondering what sort of tops you recommend to go with board shorts.
Swim Tank Tops or Bikini Top
Depending on your personal style. The variety of swim tank tops from TYR are great b/c they have a lot of support built into them and they are made for the water. If you like showing off your cleavage, than bikini top with board shorts is always a hot combo.
Im skurrrrd
Swimsuit season sends me into hyperventilation everytime. Im terrified this year...
Me too.
Which is why I'm not going to put a suit on until I've done a couple months of Leah Beckingham's workout routines.
i'm glad...
that Canada still has a few months to go before bikini season is upon us...
