Book Review: Periphery

Was it Confucius or Marvin the Martian who once asked, “Where is the kaboom?” I’ll tell you where it is. It’s in Periphery: Erotic Lesbian Futures. Kaboom. Kerplowee! Other explodey noises. Do you hear that? That is the sound of my mind being blown. Because this book done blew it.

Edited by Lynne Jamneck and packing a wallop with 13 stories, finely crafted, all of them, this anthology delivers upon the sacred promises of science fiction and erotica alike: it twisted my brain in circles, and then it spun my libido around like a little, whirling dervish of a top. (Or bottom. Whatever. Ahem.)

In “They Came From Next Door,” Kristyn Dunnion offers up a dystopian look at a future where the middle class is literally history, and guerilla have-nots are wreaking revolution upon overly-complacent haves. Caught somewhere in the middle, a butch/femme couple carves out time for one last roll in the hay before separating to play each their own part in the struggle ahead.

With “Touching Fire,” author Nicola Griffith puts a heady spin on desire and crossing the line between artistic genius and madness. She had me at the title, undoubtedly a nod to Kay Redfield Jamison’s Touched with Fire; but throw in a virtuoso who can create incredible music simply by the way she moves her body, and I was hooked. In “Ishtaru,” Lyde Morehouse writes a future where the only safe place to be queer is under the designation of sacred whore, and of a rebirth of faith through the sweetness of desire.

“The Voyage Out” is probably my favorite offering here. Positing a future where criminals (violent and “political” alike) can be shipped off to scrape out a living on a new world or die trying, Gwyneth Jones spins a captivating tale of hope and desire in a dark place. Really, I was bummed that this one wasn’t an excerpt from a forthcoming novel. I wanted more!

On another tack entirely, “Devulban Dreams” is a sweet story of love lost and found again. “Silver Skin” was one of the most imaginative of the bunch, with a mechanized substance that encases the body like a second skin playing a role both in the sexiness as much as the plot. This story also boasts giant, man-eating turtles, a touch which filled me with geeky glee.

Celebrated erotic writer Cecelia Tan’s offering, “The Spark,” was incredibly sexy, with a healthy heaping of starfuckery and angst. I did find this piece a little lacking in the development of its sci-fi element, but the rock and roll aspect was fun, and perhaps the author was merely being coy.

Finally, Sharon Wachsler’s “Sideways” was another favorite of mine here, with what I thought were probably the hottest sex scenes of the bunch. In this tale of openly corporate-owned political parties, a disabled lesbian and her younger lover wage secret subversiveness against a U.S. government that considers the non able-bodied to be expendable. The scenes between the two characters here are not just wicked hot, but beautifully tender as well. And as for the future depicted in this one? It’s chillingly, eerily believable and made moreso by being set less than 60 years in the future.

After drinking in this anthology, I find my appetite whetted for more. It never before occurred to me how well the aims of queer theory and science fiction mesh — both question the world as we know it, turning it upside down and shaking it to see what falls out of its pockets. In short, Periphery got my brain pumping along with my blood.

touching fire

I'm glad you liked the story but, no, the title wasn't a nod to Jamison's Touched by Fire--that was published in 1994, my story pubbed for the first time in 1991.

Great title!

Well color me foot in mouthy. And undeniably touched.

I've heard that the swallows

I've heard that the swallows aren't as punctual in Capistrano as they used to be. Still every time I drive to LA and pass the exit for SJC I think about going there during swallow season just to have seen it. And to act out some scenes from The Birds.

So, Julia, I'm free this weekend, when do you want to drop off that book so I can peruse it? :-)

Jdubs - How fast do you read?

I mean, do you have like 8 books on the go at once? Are you skipping words? Seriously. Does Mensa know how fast you read? Where do you find these books? Are they recommended by friends? Do you google a subject and see where it leads? and What is the air-speed velocity of an unladen swallow? I really want to know!

Where you been, ho?

I read much slower than I used to, maybe about 40 pages/hour these days. I chalk this up to age and infirmity. MENSA won't return my calls. Some books I solicit from publishers and authors, some I snag from a local LGBT lending library, and others are recommended to or just sent to me. I heart Google. (Did you know that their gay employee group is called "Gaygle"? As in, "at Pride in New York this summer I saw a gaggle of Gaygles.") And I'm still stuck on 'swallow' as a verb, so I merely titter with prurient glee at your last question.

Have I mentioned that at one point Moon was trying to get me to read two or three books a week for this gig. (!!!) I begged off with the excuse that I thought my head might explode. *explodey kerblammy noise*

explodey *giggling*

Explodey is my new favorite word; I'm gonna try to use it at least a dozen different ways today. As in Julia's posts make my heart go all explodey with giggly glee.

Hey, that's 2 cool words in as many days. Keep it up, girl!

Swallows

I've been lurking... peeking around corners and skulking in dark places (The usual)

There's something about swallows isn't there? Did you know all swallows return home to San Juan Capistrano every year and that swallow tattoos were used to symbolize that you will always come home. They are a sign of loyalty, pride to both regions and people not to mention swallows mate for life.

Oh, AND it's a damn good verb too.

Tattoo?

Did Shane have a swallow on her arm for while? I remember getting a glimpse of something and wondering if that was what it was. I had no idea of the symbolism. Loyalty, yes. Shane, mate for life? Well, a lofty ambition.

:)Taem?

I dunno about Shane

I can only speak for myself and my own tattoos.

Julia, should I put this one in Rusty's Christmas stocking? That may be too long to wait, though. :-)

Ha ha! The first thing I

Ha ha! The first thing I thought when I started writing this review was how much Rusty was going to love this book.

Yowza

You had me at "Marvin the Martian." I'll definitely add this to my reading list.

Dude, I am driving to San Diego tomorrow night to pick up my ComicCon tickets. I think I'll hang around and watch the Fringe premiere. I have to miss Thursday because of work. That means I'll miss the Doctor Who and Torchwood panels. Damn it. How's your spreadsheet?

Your friend,
Rusty

re: how's your spreadsheet

In a word? Over-ambitious.

Thursday I'm going to try to make both True Blood and the Jacqueline Carey-infused panel, which overlap by fifteen minutes. Eep. I think Lily and I are going to jump ship together for that one. (She and Matt are interested in maybe taking turns holding places in line for Dollhouse on Saturday if you're down. Wanna be line buddies?)

Friday, except for Joss, I'm mostly hitting the writing panels. And Big Bang Theory if I can get there that early.

Saturday is the big one. Dollhouse and BSG. Hoping to make Sarah Connor (and/or Tori Amos, can't make up my damn mind) and Fringe that day, too. And maybe the Ray Bradbury spotlight. TV super sci fi nerd day, whee!

Man. Whoever did the Saturday programming schdule is evil beyond compare.

Oh, yeah. And you will really dig Perpiphery!

Free Comic-Con Wifi

Rusty, I see there is free wifi at Comic-Con this year. You can do live blogging! Hint. Hint.
