High Fashion: Suit Up

I’m an absolute jean fanatic. Last count, I own 42 pairs in various sizes, washes, crops and stitching designs. I can tell you where and when I bought each pair and what shoe I envisioned them complimenting. I gravitate to the denim section of any store without conscious planning. And I swear that every pair I own is unique and necessary in my closet, as I see the nuances like no one else.

So, it was a HUGE departure for me to admit to myself that I was craving a suit. A decade ago I worked in a corporate job where I was required to own a closet full of suits. When I left that profession to become an artist, I swore off matching tops and bottoms forever. I considered it part of WHY I left — because I was meant to wear more comfortable, more “creative” clothing to match my new field.

But, somehow, it snuck up on me that I actually love the vision of woman in a suit. I think it began with my multi-season crush on Bette from The L Word. Without fail, she looks both sophisticated and sexy in her pantsuits. Thus began my preoccupation last summer with owning a white suit. I shopped dozens of stores in search of said suit. Theory to Ted Baker to Ralph Lauren, I searched to no avail. This spring, however, I did find a simple navy pinstriped suit, which I debuted last weekend.

I realize we’re not all the same type, and the good news is that suits come in a range of styles to serve a range of tastes. This first one (White House | Black Market) is a softer way to suit up. It mixes the dress pants with a matching vest and a flowing, chiffon shirt. It’s great for both daytime and evening with a pair of heels.

The second suit (Strenesse) is the more stylish corporate option. The jacket is cropped with a belt as to accentuate a smaller waist and she’s wearing it over a pressed shirt with French cuffs, which I LOVE. This is perfect for board meetings or awards shows.

Ralph Lauren is the go-to for classic, conservative fashion, and this ensemble is no exception. The houndstooth pattern is striking and would be worn with black simple slacks or riding pants, depending the direction you were heading. I find the hat and tie a bold addition that would be perfect for the red carpet or the opera.

I chose this khaki suit because it’s a whole different, yet delicious, direction for summer wear. Made of soft cotton, wrinkles are permitted for a classy yet casual vibe. This suit is perfect for the family reunion in the Adirondacks or your girlfriend’s sister’s wedding in Colorado.

And last, but not least, are the classic Boss monochromatic options. I love this black suit worn with a black shirt and black belt. It’s so clean and European, a safe option for any event. This second suit is a bigger statement. The sheen gives some personality to what first appears to be a quite simple set. Notice the cropped sleeves and the coin pocket detailing on the double-breasted jacket. The material is stiff with stretch for a very form-fitting look. High-cut and modern, this is a good choice suit for a job interview.

So, I’ve learned for the umpteenth time to never say never, as I anticipate the next opportunity I’ll have to wear my summer suit…

For me

Bette brought the power-suit to a whole new level of sexy!! Actually, Tina looked pretty good in her suits in Season 5 as well...

I don't tend to wear them anymore since I have also pulled away from the corporate world/corporate look, but I do appreciate the black/black. I'm also really feeling the whole RL ensemble.

BTW - 42 pairs of jeans??!! WOW!!

and please, could you show

and please, could you show us your pairs of jeans ?

Suits

I love a sharp looking suit on a gal. I mentioned this on another blog about suits. I have a hard time finding a suit that fits correctly, without sending big bucks on tailoring, due to my small size.

I like that black Boss suit too, Jenn.
