Lesbian Media and Your Voice

Superdelegate Al Gore has still not endorsed a Democratic candidate. When he was asked by Terry Gross yesterday why he hasn’t, Al said “I’m simply watching and listening to the campaign like everyone else. I haven’t ruled it out, but haven’t been moved to do so.”

When asked if he thought that this long battle for the Democratic nomination would hurt the party and the future candidate's chances of winning in November, Al said “It could be… but I’m not sure that’s the case. There is a pendulum that favors the party that has been out of power for the last eight years. One manifestation will be a powerful urge toward unity no matter how divisive the nominating contest has been.”

We forget that this man has come through that crushing battle that left our contry in the precarious political, social and economic situation we are in. And he reinvented himself having forged a public presence which is tempered and wise.

Al was speaking on Gross’s show Fresh Air to promote his book The Assault on Reason released in paperback. Gore maintains that our Constitution was written during the Age of Reason, which was defined by the printing press. Our founding fathers believed that the printed word by free presses — protected by the Bill of Rights (“freedom of speech, of the press, and of assembly” ) — would create a well-informed citizenry. In today’s marketplace of ideas, Gore says, the TV funded by big business and self-interest groups has dominated and drained reason from the public sphere. While the Internet has not yet usurped TV’s power, the importance of keeping the Internet free of private interests and government intervention is tantamount to upholding our Constitution and most importantly the advance of public discourse.

So, though mainstream news outlets spin information according to their own interests, two women have been working away tirelessly to build a community and network of lesbian media professionals who, in turn, work for our freedoms and visibility. Three years ago Jennifer Howd and her then business partner began a National Media Conference for LGBT professionals called Q-Me Con (Queer Media & Entertainment Conference). They were able to attract corporate sponsorship as well as create an environment for aspiring professionals to network with executives and industry insiders. The first year was held in New York, the second year in Los Angles and this year Jennifer and her partner Sandra Madsen have launched the first Q-Me Con Women’s Summit.

The event takes place this Saturday in New York. The keynote speaker is Rose Troche, and other panelists include filmmaker Barbara Hammer, actress Heather Matarazzo, afterellen.com founder Sarah Warn, “Lesbian Sex and Sexuality” producer Katherine Linton, GO Magazine publisher Amy Lesser and yours truly, along with Diana Cage. Basically, there will be lesbians from all walks of the media landscape: print, TV, film, radio and the Internet participating in panels and discussions. A full schedule of events and seminars are online here. Diana and I are on a panel "The Lesbian/Bi/Queer Written Perspective: Blogs, Books and Mags." We hope to see some of you there.

The opening party will be held at the HK Lounge 523 9th Avenue at 39th Street, from 7 to 10 p.m. on Friday night.

freedom of speech...

and freedom of expression.. all positives - *insert sarcasm here* glad we live in a world where we are not censored and have the ability to express ourselves completely and fully without repression.

thinking that

slinging insults and disturbing others freedom of speech, and assembly — immature outbursts and the expressing of ill will towards others is exerting your first amendment rights — What an incredibly adolescent interpretation of the constitution.

could you please tell us Grace...

What are you slinging, if not insults? You tossed a freedom of speech bomb at Carlin and Juniper in my humbly adolescent freedom of speech opinion.

immature outburst?

From what I read, before the OC deleted it...you had a pretty immature outburst yourself. It was something about not doing things with animals... Yes, you had the right to express your immature outburst and you did. And..you're still here. Others are not here because they expressed their opinions in what YOU view as an immature outburst.

it happens

all over the OC every day between Jenniki's Shenny's talace palacers - it happens on the politics blogs between obama-ers and clinton-ers - it happens in the race blogs - and.. where's the hand of big sister there? oh, and the tranny conversation a while back - where people were being insulted left and right - some bloggers feel the need to set other bloggers straight because their opinions are contrary to the one claiming majority opinion - or if someone says that they question the over sexualisation of the OC lately.. they get insulted by someone on here with authority.... yes.. i have an opinion on recent events here.. and the actions that were taken - especially considering that the expression of "ill will" was directed at someone in charge and not some other random blogger who isn't in the inner circle and thus no one gives a shit about if they are having insults hurled at them.

what an incredibly elitist and selective choice of enforcement - are you republican?

I totally

Welcome your opinion and freedom of expression.

Though I profoundly and deeply disagree with it.

And why is ill will directed at anyone Okay?

Ill will isn't ok.

I don't personally agree with it - censor all of it or censor none of it - but selective censorship isn't cool either.

since when is asking for

respect and adhearance to guidlines on an "opt-in" community, Agreed to on a legally binding and fully disclosed agreement, censorship?

You are fully free to participate or not. That choice is entirely up to you.

oh yes

The opt in contract that let's us know that Our Chart is really Their Chart, and don't mess with it or else. We are fully free to participate as long as we don't question authority or offend the masters-I mean bloggers, who work so hard at their thankless jobs with no one but-oh, never mind...Just go ahead and kick me off, that is the next step, right-because that choice, to kick me or anyone else off, is totally up to you.

enforce it all the time

is that too much to ask then? if it's the opt in law ... then enforce all of it all the time.

Isn't there something on there about not promoting items for sale on the OC also? I've seen people hocking their wares (book) on here before. Did that get removed? Are regular/argumentative/offensive posters being deleted when they consistently offend others?

It reminds me of the po-po who when they pull over a drunk driver and find out he/she is one of them..They let them go with a verbal warning. When it's a general civilian, they go to jail, lose their rights for the night - face the music, etc. It all seems to depend upon who you know, who you are in tight with, whose opinion or comments you fall closer to on the opinion spectrum.

That's about all I have to say on this topic. Have a good day.. :)

probably every day on the oc or every third day

someone feels attacked, insulted, maligned, defensive, etc. who is policing the OC posters and supporting those people? right now there is an argument on the below blog where people feel blogjacked and insulted, disrupted and so forth.. what's happening there to sort this out? can someone please intervene and help the defenseless?

If you'd

like to apply for the job of OC moderator you are welcome to.

I must tell you it is a pretty thankless job. Expect people to blame you for everything from infringing on the bill of rights to teaching the 9/11 hijackers how to fly airplanes... Oh and also expect to work on your days off, ermmm... like today.

have a good one,

xo

Hi Grace, two things. 1) Do

Hi Grace, two things. 1) Do you really feel that your job is thankless? I've seen people compliment you all over the place. I've told you, and everyone here, many times over how much I appreciate you, how intelligent you are, how clever you are, how hard you work, etc. I've tried my best to remain positive and supportive. I don't like negativity. I genuinely like everyone I meet and will always eagerly tell them when I enjoy their thoughts and comments. Do you really think people don't appreciate you?

2) Freedom of speech. A few days ago I asked a question about the motives of OurChart and commented that it's been sexed up quite a bit lately and you basically told me that if I'm offended by "licking pussy, fisting and drinking menstrual blood" then I should just stay away from it. Well that's fair enough. :) FYI, very little offends me. However, it's unfortunate that we live in a world where teachers and librarians can't discuss those things in public. That's just the way it is. I want to be comfortable being myself here. I don't want to feel that I have to hide behind a character or someone that I'm not in order to talk about things. How can we get to know each other if we're acting and not being honest?

I was very, very close to jumping ship, but I'll stay and occasionaly participate in the PG-rated discussions. I'm all for the freedom of expression, but I also love my job. - Peace

It's disturbing that you

It's disturbing that you missed the offense in your comment, but only that Grace chastised your remarks. You just didn't ask about OC motives you called sexual acts groups of people ...gay men,gay women, and yes straight men/women enjoy participating in gross and shocking. This on a lesbian based site frequented by Queers from around the spectrum.I'm still shocked!

Your comment here seems to be about YOU and YOUR job.Why is it OC responsibility to gear this whole site toward helping you keep your job???

I've been on this site since it went up in january last year.It hasn't been any more "sexed" up as you call it now than it's been before.

The only one who seems to be

The only one who seems to be disturbed here Latane is you.

It's not the OC's responsibility to make sure that I keep my job, but it is my responsibility to choose whether or not to participate.

I don't mean to offend anyone with my comments I'm just stating a fact. I wish that I could say whatever I want without worrying about it, but that's just not possible. How is that being offensive to people at OurChart?

If you think I'm the only

If you think I'm the only one then you didn't read others comments. Go back and read that whole thread. And from this comment you still aren't getting "it",which is were the root of the offense about butt fucking, etc. comes from.

Bye everybody! I'm out of

Bye everybody! I'm out of here. Peace and love to all. I'll see everyone in 7 months. Good grief I've never experienced more bullshit on a site in my life.

I wouldn't be using rovermom as the moderator name, for one -

And the OC moderators have procedures to obtain by. Impartiality is a plus, and I don't think I've ever treated you differently from anyone else.

Oh really? I doubt it.

Oh really? I doubt it. Unless of course you know people who know people who own and operate this place. Interesting though - I swear this is the same group that had a hissy fit and left and left and left and left - and wasn't it about censorship the last time too?

And I loved that group - still do. I'm just not a follower.

I'm a follower.

I follow good causes, ideas and people. Don't you?

and sometimes people follow me. That is how society works.

^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

I never ask people to

I never ask people to blindly follow me, and I do the same.

I don't follow causes, but participate with them - it's not a following thing, but ahhh, sort of a side by side thing...ya know?

Maybe society works that way - but individuals work differently...

The comparative.

In grammar, the comparative is the form of an adjective or adverb which denotes the degree or grade by which a person, thing, or other entity has a property or quality greater or less in extent than that of another, and is used in this context with a subordinating conjunction, such as than, as...as.

You can see a coarse example here

don't worry lisa bang

Just so you know, immaturity

Just so you know, from an outsider's point of view, immaturity sucks!

But peace

Isn't there some sort of manditory amount of bitching required here - or is that high school? Sometimes I confuse the 2.

the internet is the saving

the internet is the saving grace of our society right now.

representing us

Glad to know there is such a great group of women that will be representing us at the Q-Me Con Summit. Yes, having the internet remain free of government control and private interest is critical, especially for our community with all the wonderful online resources we have access to now.
Thanks Grace!

Thanks Grace

Thanks for telling us about this group and the conference. As always, you pack lots of info in your blogs and amazingly put together a collection of apparently disparate subjects: Al Gore's observation on the presidential race, the Bill of Rights, reason and lezzies in media. When I start reading your blogs, it's like mr. toad's wild ride--never know quite where your going but I stay in the seat and hold on.

I look forward to reading about your take on the conference. Will you be posting pics of you kissing our lezzie media moguls? :o)

Awww, Uncle Al.

I don't know how many folks around here tune into Current TV (his venture), but it's pretty cool.

We certainly could use a dose of reason these days. I'm flabbergasted by the lack of it.

Grace,

this sounds extremely interesting - please give us a follow-up blog - at least your panel discussion and or Rose's keynote.

Thanks

Nothing but love

Tex

Q-Me Con

Q-Me Con 2008, Women's Summit sounds very interesting and if I were going to be in NYC this weekend, I'd definitely attend.

Shhhhh, in another life I was a (lowly) journalist. Now I'm a career blog commenter. ;-)

And a damn

good one at that!

Excellent!

I look forward to reading about the Q-Me Con seminars. Beautifully written Grace.
