Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness

I was directed to this Christian website with the headline “Normal People Do Not Behave Like This — Boston Dyke March 2008.” The site devoted to exposing our homosexual agenda writes: "This in-our-face dyke movement — a combination of radical feminism and homosexual militancy — has zero to do with civil rights and everything to do with attacking normality by promoting perversion.” Included are a seires of photos from the March with the lead-in: “Vulgarity on Display at Boston Dyke March June 13. All photos shown here were shot by MassResistance.”

Funny how these same images mean such completely different things to different people. One’s persons normalcy is another one’s perversion and one person's perversion is another’s celebration.

Some 231 years ago, Thomas Jefferson wrote: “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness.”

Wikipedia cites Abe Lincoln for popularizing the Declaration of Independence. The document was largely forgotten during the war of Independence and it’s popularity slowly grew over the subsequent years. Lincoln used it as a moral guide in his own quest for American civil rights. In his Gettysburg Address, Lincoln wrote: "Four score and seven years ago, our fathers brought forth on this continent, a new nation, conceived in Liberty, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal."

A friend told me I should write about the Willams sisters at Wimbledon. I looked over the headline earlier and didn’t give it a second thought. The sisters have faced each other eight times in Grand Slam matches and this is at least their second Wimbledon final together. My friend reminded me this is about the affects of civil rights and de-segregation in professional sports. Earlier this week, Tiger Woods walked off with his 13th professional major championship win before taking a hiatus for knee surgery. Tiger is behind the U.S. record holder Jack Nicklaus who holds the career title of 18 major championship wins. Tiger is only 32 years old. The first black professional tennis player was not Arthur Ash, but Althea Gibson who won Wimbledon in 1956. Tiger is the first black Asian-American golf champion in the history of the sport. Astonishingly, some national golf clubs did not allow blacks on the green until 1990.

America’s greatest export is our culture. The world may hate our politics and our cars, but they sure can’t get enough of our TV, films, music, fashions and attitudes. That almost every lesbian across the globe watches The L Word is an awesome phenomenon. Our culture flourishes under our civic freedoms. Here’s an equation: freedom + equality = happiness.

This country was founded on the fundamental principle of freedom... freedom from persecution, freedom from British rule, freedom of speech and religion, freedom of the press, freedom from slavery, freedom to vote. American history is a series of battles for equality and liberty, from our founders through the civil rights movements.

Queer equality and the first black President of the United States seems to me the next logical evolution of America’s cultural contribution to the world.

I think that, as offensive as that entire article was so me, the groups description and "letter to McDonalds" was what upset me the most. I am SO hurt right now. I can't even believe that people like this exist.

I have so much to say on this, and I plan to get in touch with the president of this organization, ASAP.

I also find the subdued fear and go along to get alone attitudes of so many gays interesting.

I FUCK women is a pretty clear statement and I don't find it the least bit disgusting. I'm always amazed at all the people who want equality but; lack the guts to demand it.

If you attend a DYKE march just what are you expecting to see?? If explaining 'it' to children is so hard then don't. If your offended present; a less dramatic sign.

It's like going to a rock concert and complaining that the music is to loud.

I believe firmly in civil disobiedence. And Free expression no matter how disgusting. If you want to be disgusted think about the 1000 or so women who were raped, beaten or killed around the world while you were so righteously appalled over a sign. &^%^$@

I agree. The only thing I might add is that in public places there are families with children around. That puts the parent in the position of having to explain things when their kid asks, "Mom what does fuck mean and why do those women fuck women?" That's hard for a lot of parents, but maybe it's a good thing. In a perfect world they would go and get "Heather has Two Mommies", read it to their kid and explain that all love is good.

i've tried, god knows i've tried. i can't for the LIFE of me explain lesbians! but if some brave parent wants to try, let them. they've got to explain much "worse" things, like why are we still driving around in cars when it's killing off the entire planet? or why are all those guys in the veterans parade missing pieces of their bodies? it's called LIFE. united-statesians do our best to ignore reality but yeah, sometimes some of it slips through & scares the shit out of us!

I've been to a lesbian march in DC

in which women, thank god, were fully clothed. They carried intelligent signs and had a clear feminist agenda.
They were not about shocking people.

How did you come to be so

How did you come to be so sure it is their intention to shock? Is it not possible that they are expressing themselves in semantics that are relevant, meaningful, and routine within their community? Some participate in these events to push societal thinkings. Others are very simply celebrating what is comfortable and meaningful to them. My muscles tense every time I see a cross, but I would never dream of confronting anyone on their right to put their symbols and beliefs out there.

Anyway, how many families stumble onto these events? If you find it offensive, hide the women and children, pull the shades, and hunker down with your scripture.

If you want to make positive change, accomplish something valuable in life, like writing a book, breaking athletic records, staying in a committed relationship for your whole life - whatever, and be out at the same time.

I just think that it takes diversity. There isn't any one way to help push this movement of acceptance. And when we celebrate diversity, it means...completely ALL of the colors in our society...da good and da different...even da bad.

It's not just about celebrating only our own shade.

Our changing society's tolerance isn't just about us fitting in to "their" standards and "their" norms and being out at the same time. It takes more then just that...it takes people being who they are, and someone saying "we're cool" with that.

These dykes and bois and people are not out there murdering people and doing people wrong...I just don't see what the fuck the big deal is!

Then again, is this like when someone cringes at the sight of two people kissing?

You wouldn't like Columbus, Ohio then. It's legal for women to go topless there, which is interesting for a historically conservative state. There were a couple of floats full of topless women at Pride.

As for intelligent signs, I think the "Eat at the Y" sign was clever and funny. I do agree that purposely trying to push your agenda by being as shocking as possible doesn't work very well. You're either preaching to the choir or alienating even more the people who are naturally offended by that sort of thing.

Yet Grace has a good point as well. What one finds interesting and clever, another will find offensive. I used to stand vigil every week in protest of the Iraq war. I had a very positive sign of a large peace symbol with the slogan "Peace. Back by Popular Demand." You wouldn't believe how that sign angered some people, especially young men in the military who would scream obscenities at me as they drove by like, "Love it or Leave it you you f___ing Commie! Screw the rag heads!"

Overall I support people's freedom of expression, even if I don't think their tactics are working. If something offends me I just don't look.

It's been a couple of years

so the memories are fuzzy on the wheres & hows.But the crux of the story I heard on a T.V. show was that a woman had a peace sign shaped wreath hung on the front of her house for Christmas & the authorities got so many complaints from various people in the neighborhood that they penalized her by chargeing her $25 a day untill she would take it down.

PK, I laughed when I read your post because when I'm riding my Segway, MANY young men shout at me. I have my shirt on and am not even carrying a sign. Alot of the time they just scream. But some of the favorite things they yell are "Fuck you" You suck!" "Faggot!" I'm not even carrying a sign. One time, a guy yelled from his monster truck, "that's so gay!" I put my thumb up and said "yep, sure is!"

Thanks LezBeth. :) My friends and I used to just smile and throw them a peace sign whenever anyone would do that. They want to get a rise out of you and they actually get angier the nicer you are. Some of our favorite negative comments were, "Get a Life!" and "Take a shower you hippies!" That one was funny and so off the mark since we were all professors, social workers and librarians.

On a scarier note, once a man who was high on crack cocaine walked up to me, looked at my sign and then tried to attack me. He starting screaming things that didn't make sense and he lunged at me, trying to throw punches. My friends all gathered around to protect me and someone called the Kent police who came out and did a fine job of apprehending the guy.

Most of the people were very supportive though, honking and throwing peace sings back at us.

I'm with you Alittle. I don't think these kinds of base language signs help the cause. I respect all women and would never degrade other women with such displays. These ladies are free to express themselves as they wish, and I as a lesbian am free to disagree. If this way of thinking makes me square, oh well.
