Pop psychology lore calls mouth decoration a way for females to attract a mate: leading attention to your face lips is supposed to invite the viewer to consider your downstairs lips. While there may not be such a blatant connection — unless perhaps you've written CHECK OUT MY CRACK on your teeth with lip liner — lipstick-type activity has been around for thousands of years.
According to Professor Hamed A. Ead at the University of Cairo, Egyptian burials from around 1400 B.C. included cosmetics jars filled with red lip gloss made from fat mixed with ochre and/or possibly other plant material. Back then, cosmetic wearing was a must for women and men alike.

Today’s options include red gloss, as well as a glorious cornucopia called more — mattes, frosts, shimmers, sheers, stains, creams, long-wears (a.k.a. cement in a tube, usually a somewhat to very drying base with a mildly to highly shiny topcoat). And then there are the primers and the sealants. Not to mention the balms. And that old standby, Vaseline. And, in a pinch, with no actual product available and a photo op with Shane or a Shane analogue in your immediate future, you can nibble on your own labia (as it were) to bring out their color. Then for shine, wet them with your tongue... or someone else’s.
As far as specific brands go, after having tasted hundreds (thousands?) of lipsticks over the years — mine and others — I can tell you that usually the more expensive ones taste better (MAC everything… oh, that delicious vanilla). But not always (Prada Shielding Balm, BeneFit, Estee Lauder, Lancome and too many more). Usually they have better formulations — not nastily sticky, more consistently saturated (Lorac Sheer Wash lip stain, Dior Addict Ultra Gloss Reflect), but not always (Clinique Glosswear, and, as much as I hate to say it, MAC Lipglass). Usually they wear better (Clinique Almost Lipstick), but not always (Urban Decay Lip Ink). Usually they have better design and packaging (Fresh Lip Shine, Hard Candy Sweet Spot), but not always (Urban Decay XXX Shine, I love you, but PLEASE STOP LEAKING IN MY PURSE).
As always, your mileage may vary, and what wears like a wax museum nightmare on me may give you the lips to end all lips, causing would-be suitor upon would-be suitor to hurl themselves at your feet, begging for just one chance to get next to your precious pout. I know I keep saying this, but really, trial and error is pretty much the only way to figure out what works.
And now, a hair metal paean to lipstick and leather called, strangely,
“Lipstick & Leather.”
Because this can get expensive, especially for the confirmed label whore — not that there’s anything wrong with that — if you don’t have any cosmetics-compatible friends around on whom to offload any disappointing purchases, I would like to recommend the amazing swap site
MakeupAlley.com. This is THE spot if you have ever wondered what the word on the street is about that fancy Shiseido, the Skincare Protective Lip Conditioner you were considering trying (for the record, it's pretty great — colorless, odorless, moisturizing without grodiness, and, in case you swing that way, about as butch as a silver tube of lip product can get). With millions of reviews and counting, MUA helps you research products and then find folks to trade for them. You can check out each user's swapping history before making a move. And then you get your goods, all for a few dollars’ worth of postage. (That Shiseido dilly retails for $23.50... I'm just saying.) It is a small price to pay to engage in the ancient art of getting people to think about your junk.
Next week: More lipstick! Making the most out of an almost, and teaching your old gloss new tricks.
Stay beautiful,

Once a man
told me that he considered lipstick as a weapon...
Did this man..
Did this man say, Why he considered lipstick to be a weapon??
yes
he meant that he was a victim of women... falling in love seing any kind of lipstick.
Lipstick has never....
Lipstick has never had that effect on me, but the feel of a woman's lip has.
of course...
I can really understand what you mean...
But I sometimes like lipstick for its strangeness.
I love lipstick.
That is all I need to say.
*Please do not use that self help jargon on me. I will barf*
I'm not a lipstick kinda
I'm not a lipstick kinda girl, although I have really dark brown hair, almost black and the right red lipstick occassionally really sets it off! Most of the time I use Lucas' Pawpaw ointment...for me, this is the be all and end all of lip balms...it's made in Australia so not sure if it's available in the states, but SO worth getting if you can find it anywhere...it moisturises without being greasy and is quickly absorbed into your lips. I haven't come across anything else that leaves my lips soo soft and looks great on - like a really subtle shine..it's fab!
Peace and love, x
I wear lipstick just about
I wear lipstick just about every day, but I apply c.o. bigelow mentha lipshine over it. It tastes good (my favorites come in peppermint, cinna-mint and spearmint) and gives your lips a nice shine.

I'm a Simple
I'm a simple clear lipgloss kind of girl myself. Clear lipgloss during the day and at night before I go to bed. I apply cocoa butter to my lip to keep them moisturized and soft. I wear lipliner or lipstick proably like 5 times out of each year. I'm a sucker for natural beauty. Some women wear too much make-up, when they even need it @ all!
cocoa butter
Don't you want to eat it ?
I wouldn't let it on my lips, I think... beyond my control !
Ooh, cocoa butter! That
Ooh, cocoa butter! That deserves a column of its own, as well as a bunch of love poetry.
Cocoa Butter works wonders,
but the smell makes me hungry all the time. I do nothing but think about eating when I can smell chocolate all the time. Not a good thing.Seriously, my stomach growls and everything.
SO DAMN GOOD
I use to be tempted to want to eat it all the time because it smells so damn good but, I so use to it now that it doesn't bother me. I just had a good idea. I can never get a lesbian woman to notice me. I'll just put cocoa butter all over me and I'll smell so good. She won't be able to resist being interested in me, lmao!
She'll notice you
She'll notice you alright, but she'll just want to eat you *wink*
Eat Me
Lol, That could be a good thang haven't had someone who wanted to eat me in a long time. All depends on who's trying to doing the eating...
So, we do agree
Please, come to the chocolate forum, let's talk about it !

Mmmmm Vanilla!
I like Biotherm glossy shine for days when I don't want a really shimmery look - it goes on sheer and adds natural shine! And I used to love chanels ultra-wear lipcolour cause its a lipstick and gloss all in one. Lipstick at one end and gloss at the other BUT I haven't been able to find it lately - It was a fall 2007 make up release. I hate it when I find the perfect make up and then they stop selling it! Though I'm sure its still around, just not at the beauty shop that I go to at the moment.
Mini-Vas, pocket vaseline with aloe vera is great for lips too :)
Discons are the pits! Maybe
Discons are the pits! Maybe the Chanel will turn up on Makeup Alley or Ebay. Fingers crossed.

I hate kissing people with lipstick. Other than that it always makes people look like they have really luscious lips. Which is a good thing.

I have an aversion to sticky things, but once I get over it I think it's really hot to smear lipsticks together on each other's faces.
Oooo...
I have soooo many thoughts on your stickiness aversion...where to begin? ;)

Right there with you!
The only time I ever wear lipstick is if I am having a night out.

Savings
Whew! Apparently I save lots of money by never wearing lipstick. I do like a nice cherry lip balm though.
Minnie, you have no idea. I
Minnie, you have no idea. I don't even have a large stash comparatively speaking, but if I total up the MSRPs I could probably pay a solid month's rent.
What's your favorite cherry lip balm brand?
Now on the chorus
I listened to the Lipstick and Leather video and applied Vaseline as I read this.
