I have the creator and director of LAVA, Sarah East Johnson, joining me at the kitchen table of the Beeline travel trailer post show. Sarah, could you talk about what you’re exploring with the body, and what kinds of questions you’re asking of it?
I’m not that interested in the body, strangely, because that’s my tool. But, I feel like we use our physical training as a way to focus ourselves, and that the physical rigor of what we do brings us into a psychological and emotional state that I find really potent and really honest.
So, if it’s not the body, what is it that you are exploring?
For me, I’m really interested in relationships, and in our relationships to each other. And also one’s own relationship to confidence and fear and focus and discipline. I think the body is just a way to get to the psychology and the emotions.
I just find that if I can work my body to a certain state of exhaustion or readiness, then I can perform something that is real. I can perform our relationships to each other, and I can perform my relationship to the audience. If I have my body so busy and so focused on what I’m doing, it’s almost like it disappears. Although I’m fully aware that the audience is seeing our physical reality, I get more interested in what kinds of relationships are developed out of that.
You describe yourselves as feminists, and you’re exploring
everything from physics to volcanoes. What is it in your work and what
you’re choreographing and creating, where you’re using the strength of
your bodies to do this?
I started training as a dancer; and in dance, as a women, you’re not supposed to be very big, and you’re not supposed to have too many muscles, and I found that really oppressive. So when I started learning acrobatics and being supported and encouraged to build muscle, it occurred to me that, I think, muscles are actually a feminist issue. But it was really just following my passion for acrobatics that made me do it. It was my consciousness as a feminist that didn’t hold me back from doing it, and didn’t think, “Oh, women shouldn’t be big,” which is this idea that’s so pervasive, we can’t even imagine.
In dance, the audience is asked to objectify the bodies on stage, and I think our bodies are beautiful and everything, but the point is not to see them as objects. The muscles aren’t a point... we’re not building muscle to look good; we’re doing it so that we can achieve these skills. And I think it’s important for people to be able to look at women’s bodies in a different way, where you can see the beauty and the sexiness, but it’s not objectifying.
What is the reason that you decided to have all women in your company?
I just really love women, and women inspire me. I like working with women.

Hey Sabrina!
Excuse me, Sabrina........ Does LAVA stand for , Lesbians Are Vaginally Aware???
I think that is just,well....... disturbing! Couldn't they think of something
less.......uhhhhhhhh , stimulating??
Gotta love a "muscular vagina".
Peace and Good Pumping ;-))

A question Sabrina
I just watched "When Night is Falling" for the bazillionth time. The acrobats on the trapeze dance that went with Petra and Camille's love scene (oh my) were doing the same moves as Lava did in the video on their website. Do you know if Lava participated in that movie?
Lezbeth
PS WNIF is my favorite lezzie movie...you can't beat Petra's line--"Camille, I'd love to see you in the moonlight with your head thrown back and your body on fire."
Agree...
"When Night is Falling" is one of my favorites too. Its up there with " The Watermelon Woman" - Smart and funny.

Where have I been?
Hi Lezbeth,
I've never seen WNIF... I'm not sure if LAVA participated in the film. It sounds wonderful though and I'll add it to my cue. Thanks!
Top of the List?
If you have a list of movies to see, I recommend putting this one at the top. It's visually stunning, very Canadian in its artistic quality (a tuned down form of Cirque de Soleil, a touch of magic realism/metaphor and two gorgeous women finding each other in very unlikely circumstances). Mmmm Mm MMMMM!
Lezbeth
!!!
Holy Lusty Trapeze Artists, Sabrina! You've never seen WNIF? It's hands down the most beautiful lesbian love story film I've ever seen. The film score, by the utterly amazing Lesley Barber is also a favorite of mine.
Oops...
Please forgive my memory lapse. I've seen it and did love it. Lordy, those brain cells vanished momentarily.
I thought the fresh air here in the Catskills woods would have helped!!!
AAAH! I love LAVA. An old
AAAH! I love LAVA. An old roommate of mine was in a women's circus, and she made me fall in love with the whole wonderful world of circus arts, especially Aerials. The dedication to achieving the necessary strength is so amazing.
There's an aerial show once a month in New York called above the belt, and the women who do silks there are phenomenal. Another thing to strive to learn...
About the Muscle Issue
Sabrina, you bring the most interesting and intriguing women to our attention. Wow.
Here's the thing...muscles are a big (pun intended) issue in women's body building. When I was just getting into weight training (about 30 years ago) officials were arguing over how to judge women's musculature. Women's muscles could not look too masculine; they had to be feminine muscles. Say, what? Like muscles on a woman are something other than feminine. Rachel McLeash (or Macleash--something like that) got really famous because of her physical beauty and just right muscle. At the same time, a power lifter from Australia was considered too bulky for the judges. My first trainer was a woman who had won a silver medal in world competition. She looked great and could french press 70 pounds. Wow. I'm all for muscles, defined or not, bulky or not...how about Ruthie Bolton, eh?
If someone can tell me how to put a photo in these posts, I'd paste one of Ruthie in.
Lezbeth
Bev is awesome
A World Class powerlifter and body builder.
I was never a big fan of Rachel McLish. My fav was
Carla Dunlap.
I stopped following bodybuilding in the mid 90's
Women were being penalized for being too muscular.
in a Bodybuilding contest!
I stopped following it too
Sorry to hear that trend continued. I didn't like Rachel much either. From the documentary I saw, she was a bit of a prima donna--totally the opposite of what the women from Lava are doing in creating relationship and cooperation in their acrobatics. I love the idea of body/mind development for teamwork and cooperation. It's one of the reasons I love the WNBA...first pre-season game tomorrow, yay!
Lezbeth
Hi Lezbeth
I believe you are referring to Bev Francis [ www.bevfrancis.com ] who was considered out of control muscular for the judges of her time. That woman worked so fucking hard on her physique. It may not have been their, or your, or my style, per se, but how could anyone not be in awe of her busting out like that. Gawd! Way to be you, Bev. :) Peace, Jodie
Now,those girls on the swing...............
What is the girl on the swing doing with her foot ?? Hummmmm.... Look at how they are gazing into each others eyes. I want me some hot, foot lovin' !!! The other girl seems to be having an orgasm, could this just be a dream ?? Don't wake me , yet..........
