Music Reviews: Death Cab for God-des

I'm kicking this week of reviews off with another one of my favorite Nashville friends, Katie Herzig. She easily won my heart with her last release, Weightless, even making her way twice onto my list of songs that I want to crawl inside of (“Diamond Ring” and “Jenny Lynn”). Mesmerizing works, those two pieces. So, Katie has a new independent CD out this week called Apple Tree. Her songs have a style all their own. There's no verse-chorus-verse formula at work in these little beauties. There are also no clichéd lyrics to yawn through while you wait for the good stuff. It's not enough that it's worn on her sleeve, Katie puts her whole heart into her work, too. The songs are so good that they can stand firmly on their merits in a solo, acoustic setting. But, here, they are treated to some really delicious and imaginative production. Lovers of bands like Gomez and Aqualung as well as fans of singer/songwriters such as Shawn Colvin and Jonatha Brooke will both fall in love with Katie, and rightfully so.She's just fantastic.

Katie Herzig "Wish You Well"

How's about a new Death Cab for Cutie? It's called Narrow Stairs and is just out. I've not listened to these guys very much in the past, just here and there. So, I don't have any preconceived notions or comparisons to lean on. Right off the bat, “Bixby Canyon Bridge” lures you to the edge of your seat, and then “I Will Possess Your Heart” lets you know that it's a just great alt-pop song, even though the album version runs 8:35. Other stand-out tracks for me are “Your New Twin-Sized Bed” and “Grapevine Fires.” “No Sunlight” reminds me of something out of the late '80s, like The Smiths teaming up with R.E.M. maybe. It's a pretty good listen, this Narrow Stairs business.

New York rocker Patti Rothberg is back from a bit of an hiatus with Double Standards. I have to say, her new vibe is a little Goth/creepy; and I don't love all of the tunes, but some of them are pretty good. It opens with the catchy-as-hell “Alternate Universe,” eventually making its way to a few quieter pieces: “After the Parade,” “Hard Times” and “Wave Length.” To fill the edgy hole, try “Retrograde” or “Chaste Away.” And for a fun, mid-tempo number, go with “Unconditional Love.” If you happen to dig kazoo, well, there's something here for you, as well — “Someone to Love.” This one might be better bought as individual tracks, because the whole is a little disappointing.

Needing more queer hip hop in your diet? God-des and She have a new release this week, Stand Up. I'll confess that I'm not altogether familiar with their past work, so I can't do a ranking for you. However, parts of this CD are better than I remember them being when I first heard them years ago. Other parts still feel green, both in the writing and the production. The lyrical balance between personal and political is nice. “Love You Better” and “Stand Up” can stand up next to mainstream hip hop. Then you have “Lick It,” which really can't simply because the subject matter is far from mainstream.

Want something totally outside the box? Check out Eljuri's En Paz. I don't speak Spanish, so I have no idea how good the lyrics are. She has, however, drawn numerous comparisons to Santana for her style and skill; so she can't be all bad. You can judge the guitar skills on your own. The style is all over the place, incorporating reggae, flamenco, surf rock and whatever else happened to be in the kitchen, including the sink. Guests include Johnette Napolitano and Sly & Robby.

Lovin' Katie

I am loving Katie Hertzig. Thanks for the heads up. How cool is it to find new girls and new music all at one time :-)

not really about the music

but how good is the artwork on the death cab for cutie? awesome. i think it is amazing our albums are having so much better artwork, moved away from the standard band picture. Death cabs was done by graphic designer ee storey (or emy storey), she has also done a lot of work for tegan and sara.

ON the music: love death cab's new stuff, took me a while to get into them, but the new stuff really good. But not really sure what i think about death cabs guitarist Chris Walla's solo album. Its alright and wont be taking it off my itunes but not one of my top played stuff, but i suppose it is really a personal thing. Both death cab and chris walla produce amazing music, just not on my top played.

Amazing stuff coming out of Nashville scene right now....

Hey Kelly,
Thanks for the somewhat heads up about Katie Herzig, I have heard of her before but it's hard to pay attention to stuff when you hear about 15 new bands and artists in a day (being a DJ).
AND, totally sat in on the interview with Brooke Waggoner on our station and she is amazing (as a person, i already knew she was the shit as an artist).

Went to see UH HUH HER last Wednesday at Exit/In and they rocked the house, but i was only disappointed in the fact that they barely played an hour long set. :( I wanted more.
Leisha and Cam were signing stuff afterwards and were really awesome. They talked to everyone and they were so nice...I'd like to think that I didn't get star-struck ;)

On Friday went to see 2 of the coolest bands I have seen come out of Nashville in a long time.
AutoVaughn - Just released their new EP, The Cycles...and they are outstanding to see live. We did an interview with them and they are really fun guys to talk to. Look out for them to be on tour this summer.

De Novo Dahl - Their latest album "Move Every Muscle, Make Every Sound" is really awesome in the ways of energetic poppy dance rock music. I don't know really how to describe it, because they really are a sight to behold on stage.
They pretty much reminded me of Clap Your Hands Say Yeah, and that was all that I could think of.

Be on the lookout for those awesome acts coming your way and you can check out Myspace or iTunes for both of those bands.
BTW, I got the job as Promotions Director for WMTS, so any advice or hook-ups you wanna throw my way would be appreciated!

I was blown away by the artists I heard/met in Nashville. I agree that Brooke is a doll. I've heard Autovaughn's stuff. Didn't love it, but liked it okay.

Among the ones I think you should check out or invite over to the station: Tommy and the Whale, k.s. Rhoads, Sam & Ruby, The Coal Men, Matthew Perryman Jones, Jeremy Lister, Trent Dabbs, Micah Tawlks, Tyler James, Amelia White, Garrison Starr, Peter Bradley Adams, Jason Feller, Korby Lenker, April McLean...

There are more.

Thank you

For the Katie Herzig heads up! The L Word and this site have virtually revamped my music collection over the last year. I'm glad someone has the time to find these gems and share them. I'm also glad to see how YouTube and Myspace have restructured the music world and wrested it away from big corporations. Artists have a much better chance of exposure now than ever before. So much so it's hard to keep up!

Death Cab For Cutie

I suggest you start listening to their prior album, Plans.
Then you move on to their older records. Ben Gibbard writes some nice lyrics. You have to give it time with Death Cab because the more you let their music marinate the better it gets. Kinda like eating a cold pizza for breakfast.
Thanks for the music review.

I'll do that.

I actually watched a little documentary on them on Current TV the other night and it inspired me to dig into their stuff more.

Eljuri

Kelly, I found Eljuri's myspace site so I could listen to some of her music. I can't say that I was wowed by her style and voice. But I'm always on the look out for new Latina artists, so appreciate you mentioning her work.

Fedora!!

...and who is this good lookin' woman in the fedora?

Nothing but love

Covering the bases.

I agree. It didn't blow me away, but I try to throw in some world stuff now and then.
