Music Reviews: Hard Candy and More

I have to start this week off by telling you about my pal Robby Hecht. If you like early Paul Simon and James Taylor, or even Shawn Colvin, then you're going to love this guy. His new CD, Late Last Night, is so beautiful (in that really mellow acoustic vein) that it just almost makes me want to cry. It's the kind of record that I put on repeat because, if that's the mood I'm in, nothing else will do. Robby's new, yet classic tunes remind me of Simon's “Kathy's Song” or JT's “Fire and Rain.” I know that's near blasphemy in some circles, but that's how good I think this kid is. The melodies are delicate and lovely; the lyrical phrases make me wish I had written them. And this is his first solo record. Guest artists include Mindy Smith, Thad Cockrell, Peter Bradley Adams and Jill Andrews from the Everybodyfields. Mindy and Jill's beautiful harmonies infuse Lex Price's tasteful and grounded production. I can't toot this horn loud enough.

Listen to "Late Last Night" here:

Another new and fine project out of Nashville is Ampersand EP from Derek Webb and Sandra McCracken. I love Sandra's voice. It's familiar and comforting, yet I can never place who it recalls. It's not Patty Griffin or Sheryl Crow, but it's somewhere in there. This is the first real collaboration between the husband/wife duo who are known independently for their solo work. (Derek is also wildly popular for fronting Caedmon's Call.) The collective effort suits them well. You can almost hear the natural ease with which this project came together.

Frying a slightly bigger fish, Portishead returns with Third. If you love their groovy trip hop, you might very well be disappointed here. One reviewer gave it five stars while saying “the melodies are strangled by cacophony.” That's an apt description, I'd say. Third reminds me a bit of P.J. Harvey's work. It's hard and uncomfortable to listen to at first, disturbing even. But when you let it be what it wants to be, rather than what YOU want it to be, you can start to see the point of it all. I haven't quite gotten there yet, but I do think it's possible.
The Roots kick it all hard-core style with Rising Down. (Am I allowed to say that?) When it comes to hip hop, I much prefer the positive political vibes of Spearhead or Public Enemy. The whole gangsta rap thing doesn't work for me. I understand that truths must be spoken, but why not do it in a constructive way rather than spewing hate and misogyny. Rising Down is full of 'n' words and all that goes along with that line of fire. The Roots are powerful and aggressive in their presentation, which borders on being dangerous, in my mind. I don't see them as harmless as I do someone like Nelly.
Okay, I'll go there. Madonna is back with Hard Candy. I wanted a real expert opinion, so here's what my gay boy friend Justin has to say about it: “The beats are better than her. The lyrics are as bad as American Life. The melodies are good, but you could insert any pop starlet. It is infectious in its own, backgroundy kind of way.” We both agree that Justin Timberlake makes a fine contribution and the Kanye West track, “Beat Goes On,” is also a highlight. Overall, it's not that memorable and is certainly not her finest effort.
Tegan and Sara have just released the five-song Live Session EP, which is an iTunes exclusive. It's a nice snapshot of them, though I'm not a big fan of live stuff, even when it's live in a studio. (I like records to sound like records and leave the live thing for the stage. That's where it makes sense to me.) Anyway, thought you T and S fans would want to know that's out there.

Rock on!

Thanks Kelly

From what I've heard so far, your recommendations and reviews sound pretty solid for my music tastes. I'll browse around iTunes and download the tracks I like.

I'm feeling spunky today, so I'm going to stir it up just for fun. Further down on the thread, you used the word "record" and got a comment on your age. I'm sure there are more than a handful of us around OC who remember that the word is a shortened form of "recording" just like CDs are compact discs, tapes are cassettes, 8-track and reel-to-reel--I still have a TEAC deck. Oh, tapes are also those negative messages we run in our heads. (Is that an outdated word usage too since cassettes, etc. are passe?) So what do you think? Maybe all of the technologies on this list are recordings--even if they are mp3s, EPs, WAVs, remastered 45s from our youth or overplayed psychological messages that limit us.

I just thought of something else kind of funny...those old records are vinyl discs, so maybe we could call them VDs? But that might involve needing penicillin.

Thank you for watching my back. I set her "straight."

Glad you dig my taste, and yours.

I see the shit stirrer was effective.

Thank God Madonna always re

Thank God Madonna always re invent her self and don't keep the same thing over 25 years of success.

I totally love Hard Candy, the lyrics are funny but not silly we can get a lot of good things within them.

And for you whoever you are that thinks American Life lyrics were bad you should go listen Mooriah Carey cuz that's exactly what you might like. America Life has really deep lyrics and for me one of her best albums ever and very misunderstood!

The guest commentor, Justin,

The guest commentor, Justin, is a huge Madonna fan. That's why I asked his opinion. He knows her body of work way better than I do. He's also knows a lot about music, being a music publicist, so I trust him. I listened, as well, and didn't dig it either. I'm glad you like it, though. I won't be listening to Mariah Carey any time soon.

MY HATD CANDY

You can listen to Madonna's

You can listen to Madonna's entire cd on Myspace, if you can withstand it. Its a total disappointment.

I'm kind of excited about Portishead, I've yet to go and get the cd.

Late last night

Kelly, I clicked on the play button and Robby's song came out over my speakers to brighten my afternoon. Liked the banjo in the arrangement.

Nice!

It's a beautiful record. I don't say that often, so you can trust me.

Record? Seriously Kelly

Record? Seriously Kelly teehee ,what era are you from?

Dude!

Don't be hating on me. Music biz people (especially the artists) still call them records because they are recorded.

*laughs* I was just correctd

*laughs* I was just correctd for saying album. My musician friend just bust a gut everytime I try to converse with her on the whole recording thing. She said they're not songs they're tracks or cuts. UGH!

I think I need to watch MTV or somthing so I'm more hip.

The plus I told her is that with as much as I make her laugh her face muscles will forever stay tight making her look young and fresh(lol)

Thank goodness, some music!

Have to check out Robby Hechet - cause I love Shawn Colvin - shout out to an Austin woman!

Gotta check out Sandra McCracken and Derek Webb - cause I love Caedmon's Call!

Portishead has always been a favorite - if I don't like this one I'll keep listening to the oldies!

Totally agree about Madonna - and heaven for bid I say what I'm gonna say next - maybe the material girl should stop performing and start producing full time!!!!! JT collaboration was the one and only bright spot for me!

....and blow that bubble right back up!!!! We're gonna have to get Grace a Zune or IPod or mp3 player for her gift giving and receiving holiday - predownloaded with a bunch of good tunes! No woman's got game unless she's got the tunes!!!!!

Nothing but love
