Pill Kill

Why is it that whenever there is an attack on birth control, which is like every five minutes, no one goes after lesbos for hoarding the ultimate form of birth control?

The fucktards at www.thepillkills.org are doing a pretty good job of spewing nonsense about how using contraception is like having a million tiny abortions a year. They are so worked up about birth control that they're throwing a Protest the Pill day on June 7 in honor of the 43rd anniversary of the Supreme Court case, Griswold v. Connecticut, which allowed married women access to birth control.

In case you aren't up on the history of your reproductive rights, Griswold v. Connecticut went down in 1965 when Executive Director of Planned Parenthood Estelle Griswold and her pal Dr. C. Lee Buxton set up shop in New Haven and began distributing birth control. They were shut down almost immediately. Both parties were arrested and fined for violating a Connecticut law written in 1879 that prohibited "any drug, medicinal article or instrument for the purpose of preventing conception." Griswold took the case all the way to the Supreme Court, eventually getting the conviction overturned and the Connecticut law struck down.

The Griswold ruling, however, applied only to married women. It took a 1972 case, Eisenstadt v. Baird, to give unmarried folks the same right.

The Eisenstadt and Griswold cases set the precedent that a woman deserves the right to privacy in matters of sexual health and practice. The reasoning in both cases was used in the 1973 case of Roe v. Wade, which ultimately legalized abortions. The reasoning was cited again in the 2003 case Lawrence v. Texas, which overturned Texas sodomy laws. In other words, thanks to Griswold you can now get a blowjob in Texas without ending up in the slammer.

I'm sort of miffed that The Pill Kills people are ignoring the role I play in not knocking women up. Who's a girl gotta blow around here to get attacked by right wing Christian nutballs? All I ever get is the occasional douche calling up my radio show and telling me what I really need is a man.

The Pill Killers made a neato video to attract the teens. Please watch, and have a good laugh or possibly throw up in your mouth. I really want to know where they got the giant birth control pill case mascot outfits.

They are so hip, they also rigged themselves up a Facebook profile. But sadly, they only have four friends... leading me to believe that they don't really have a handle on the whole "looking cool" thing.

wow...

what a great video, i mean there really aren't IMPORTANT issues they could be addressing like I don't know Darfur, AIDS, marathon-ing for cancer, volunteering at a homeless shelter...because heaven knows they couldn't do something BETTER with their time...but CLEARLY causing a woman to stop producing a hormone around that time of the month is downright DEVASTATING to the world, i mean already with the effort they have put forth i bet chocolate consumption has gone up ten-fold on the market. So my only question is: are these quacks sponsored by Hersheys?

this is...

...Point Blank, the DUMBEST video on attempting to "educate" people I have ever seen. And i love how there are boys, and/or men holding signs and doing the chalk when they dont even get to have babies, or have a "Period", that just bothers me to no end. Dont use contraceptives, just make sure your boyfriend (who probably already doesn't want to wear a condom and maybe even goes so far as to expect you to be responsible for birth control) wears a condom, and hey lets not worry about the population which is already astronomical.llaaamme

They're cute

in their little circle suits, don't you think? Seems to me they need a biology class or something. Either that or we all should be showered with Shero awards along with Diana for all of the lives we've saved.

next they will be rallying

next they will be rallying against our periods as the loss of a potential life/unfulfilled ovulation.

the pill issue in chile

im chilean, our government gave out free birth controle and morning after pills to women who couldn't afford them but know the contitucional court (an organism that is incharged of making the constitution aplied to every law) prohibited handing them out for free, so now only women who can afford birth control will have acsses to it, and poor women (which by the way are a majoritie in my country) will be stuck with unwanted babies (abortion is illigal here)
the constitucion says "the state will protect the interest of the born to be" whatever that means...
the constitucional court is conformed by right winged conservative catholic political group who are imposing their religious belifes to the people. a few weeks ago 200000 peope marched down to "la Moneda" (our verson of the white house) to protest aganist this meassure... and of course nothing happened... our government is soposed to be socialist, left winged and liberal... but still our right to freedom is bashed once and again.

Harsh

And isn't the president a woman? Damn Catholics.

WTF??? LMAO

So if taking the pill is aborting 1,000's of potential babies what is it when they shoot the shit everywhere BUT in that area?? LMAO They are spewing the potential babies in the face, mouth etc......EW I grossed myself out now I'm done......still laughing out loud.

That's hilarious

Think of all those dead babies from wet dreams, the carnage on the floors of men's rooms where they hook. Oh my, it's a massacre.

For the record. That link in the word fucktard that leads to rstipati's profile is an error. And Im not calling her a fucktard. I was trying to credit her for first bringing the term fucktard to ourchart. But now I can't fix it because I'll screw up the video and either McCartney or Moon will yell at me.

Love that word

I use fucktard a lot. It covers everything in one purely hilarious word. It also rolls off the tongue so beautifully.

It has not been a good day

But I laughed my ass off at this. Thanks Diana. Also, there are lots of folks who would think you were being accurate.

There's a lot of back and

There's a lot of back and forth about womens' reproductive rights and whether the pill causes cancer and heart problems, but.........
I read a Reader's Digest medical article that said they have discovered that the pill reduces womens' sex drive by about twelve percent or so. I have been amazed at the total lack of media response to this shocking revelation. You would think straight boys and girls would be highly concerned? Perhaps we should be talking about womens' sexual rights rather than their reproductive ones.
Anyway not only is lesbian sex simpler (as far as contraception goes) but apparently its also hotter!

latest and greatest on the back and forth

On breast cancer: the risk of breast cancer is slightly increased in women who with prolonged use of OCPs (oral contraceptives), but these cancers tend to be estrogen-receptor positive (= easily curable). For instance, the NCI would give me a 2% higher overall lifetime risk of breast cancer for the fact that I am on oral contraceptives and plan to continue taking them until menopause. To compare, if you're an alcoholic and drink the equivalent of 4 shots per day, your risk is increased by as much. Drinking 2-3 glasses of wine (or whatever your preferred drink) per week decreases your risk by almost as much! Having one first-degree relative (mother, sister or daughter) who's had breast cancer increases your risk by 5 times that amount. Did your momma nurse you? There are some studies that show that women who were breastfed as infants have a 17% decreased risk of developing breast cancer in their lifetimes - Holy cow! Moral of the story = If you're on OCP's, drink 2 glasses of red wine per week.

Because the breastfeeding stuff is interesting, here are links to some abstracts:

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/18379425?ordinalpos=2&itool=EntrezSys...

http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/sites/entrez

On cervical cancer: Prolonged OCP use may be a cofactor in increasing risk for cervical cancer. More work needs to be done to elucidate this. And women on OCPs having sex without barrier protection (condoms) would naturally increase their risk of this cancer, since it's caused by certain strains of the sexually transmitted human papilloma virus, or HPV. Moral of this story = get your Pap smears, because no one today should die of cervical cancer.

On heart disease: A recent Swedish study of 781 women showed no increase in risk of MI (heart attacks) for OCP users. A recent study of over 2000 Aussie women showed a correlation between OCP use and elevated blood levels of C-reactive protein, a marker for cardiovascular disease. OCPs are considered risk factors for heart disease, but maintaining a healthy lifestyle is way more important.

The biggest caveat to OCP use, in my mind (perhaps with a hematology-oriented bias), is to NOT SMOKE NOT SMOKE NOT SMOKE cigarrettes. Smoking will increase risk of heart disease and a smorgasboard of cancers big time. As well as your risk of getting blood clots. And if you're one of the unluckies blessed with a genetic tendency to form blood clots, OCPs + smoking = you're a gonner!

As for the sex-drive thing, I agree with your assessment that it sounds fishy. I did a search of the medical literature with terms like "sex drive" and OCP, "sexual desire" and OCP, and libido and OCP. Only one hit came up, with an abstract that included decreased libido in adolescents taking Depo-Provera. That's not an OCP; it's a non-estrogen-containing shot given every three months, best used for patients bad at taking daily meds (e.g., teens), those with a tendency to form blood clots, and anyone who thinks a shot every three months is convenient birth control for them.

As with all of medicine, it all comes down to your risk:benefit ratio. Because in general, OCPs are pretty safe and effective, the balance works in favor of the pill more often than not.

OK, I am done with the medical diatribes for the day. The stolen moments in the lab are officially expended, as my experiment is done. Have a great weekend, everyone!

PS Fave quote from my gf, often a comment in the morning when I'm popping my vitamins, NSAID and OCP: "Dammit girl, I'm trying to git you knocked up!"

Thanks for the informative

Thanks for the informative comment - greatly appreciated!

"Moral of the story = If

"Moral of the story = If you're on OCP's, drink 2 glasses of red wine per week."

you know, i'm french and i know how important wine is for our country 's notoriety and export balance sheet, but i must say i read in very serious publications, alcohol should totally be avoid, as on OCP or not, as a man or a woman, because it is a délicious poison (with probable connection with cancer, and what ever cells destruction process...), and if you can not abstain from drinking alcool only 12 cl per day (wich is higher that what you say for on OCP women, but as you do not precise the size of the glasses ;-)

Reader's Digest ...

is a conservative/right-wing kind of publication so i would take everything they published with a grain of salt.

and another thing... AS IF they can take on the pharmaceutical industry.

The scariest part...

Ok. It's all scary.

But I'm alarmed by how young the narrator is. That's scary.

And being Catholic, I was fed this crap by various (non)educators in the Church growing up, as my mother had even been fed this line by her Catholic OB/GYN and thus also believed the lie (so she used condoms throughout her marriage until she hit menopause, at which point I watched both parents rejoice over the ditching of Trojan from their relationship - should anyone have to bear that?!). It took medical school to dispell this myth for me. The Church still has flyers in many a vestibule decrying the abortifacients contained in the pill. That's scary.

My new-agey friends who believe in anything that is not Western medicine also think that the pill is bad for women's health. Scary.

PEOPLE! This little pill is not bad for you. It doesn't hurt our bodies - it just tricks us into not ovulating. It doesn't kill babies - it prevents conception. Look it up!

The pill can provide freedom for women who are enslaved by their reproductive abilities. It can save them from death by maternal hemorrhage during their tenth delivery (serious risk for multiparous women). It won't save them from syphlis contracted from philandering husbands whom they have no right to deny sex, but it's a start, dammit! It helps those who suffer from polycystic ovarian syndrome, menorrhagia, crippling menstrual cramps - hell, even dykes like me who take it continuously to get rid of the cycle that heightens chronic back pain by several degrees!

People who fight the pill are hands-down mysogynists, all the way. Go Diana.

a few years ago i saw a tv

a few years ago i saw a tv report on contraception pill.
I have first to say, i always feel a little bit fed up by the fact that woman and only women had to support the burden of this kind of contraception : i feel it a little bit like an injustice !
In this documentary, there was a straight couple where for medical reasons the girl could take the pill. And her husband decided to take it in his care. It was quite complex as it seems ( more difficult to prevent sperm fertility than ovulation ) : he has to do multiple injectioon. But i enjoy the fact this man was very open hearted and minded.
Except definite solutions, there is not so much choice to control birth in fact, and even if the homorns contained in the pill are surely not "neutral" on long scale time perspectiv (i don't know if scientific comparaison stydies exist beetween women taking all their econd life pills and the other (among a big part of lesbains i guess), i finally change my mind on the pills : in fact,it would be more frightening to think that your partner take the burden but alos the ability to choice instead of you, i mean taking the pill is also the possibility to be totally conscious of and decision making on our own body, it's part of the freedom and adult status to manage our own life.
in the same direction, feminin condom should be spread to leave the control o their body in the hands of women ! it's the same movement towards empowerment ! And in fact that's what "pill kills" fundamentalist wants to fight in the name of a fake Nature, Nature doesn't exist ! The logic of bio is not suffering and fate !

Female condom

The supposed bonus I hear from those who have used the female condom is that it not only provides protection against STDs, including more protection than male condoms against HPV and HSV (genital warts and herpes - think greater outer coverage area = more protection), but the rim also provides extra clitoral stimulation during penetrative sex. So spread the good word to your straight girlfriends to give 'em a try!

me and my lesbian friends

me and my lesbian friends used to cut the female condom to wear the circle latex as a bracelet ( you can be a lesbian and be a fashion victim lol), but now, with all this clitoridal benefits, maybe we're going to bury the hatchet to end this condom massacer ;-))

You are fucking awesome. I can't tell you how cool it has been to have a doctors perspective on the various blogs. I was so thrilled to read all that stuff about menstrual blood, and having your perspective on the pill is also so valuable.

Thanks!

Glad to know at least someone doesn't think I come off as a pompous ass. I can get a little excited about certain things, you know!

Oh gosh

I don't even wanna get started on this topic because I'm gonna lose my glow from commenting about my mother on Grace's blog.

I'll just say this: They can pretty up misinformation but it is still misinformation.
