Tonight’s episode featured music by Vancouver-based Castle Project, not to be confused with Los Angeles-based indie rockers Castledoor! Way back when, I referenced an article that ran in the Los Angeles Times which showcased three amazing indie rock bands that at the time were garnering some much deserved attention. I’ve blogged the hell out of one of them, The Airborne Toxic Event, and proudly so! Since we last talked about them, their song “Sometime Around Midnight” has ended up in the #1 spot on LA’s alternative station, KROQ. They’ve played to several sold-out crowds around town and just finished up a short stint at Austin’s famed music festival SXSW. And you can read all about their adventures at Papermag.
So now, I think it’s time I blog the hell about another band from that list, Castledoor. A friend of mine has been reporting live from SXSW all weekend...and by reporting live I mean she’s been sending picture texts and recorded voicenotes every five minutes. Though I’m incredibly jealous of her adventures, I feel like my bangs have been affected by the Texas humidity right alongside hers! The first text that I received was a picture of Castledoor with a note that read, “these guys are amazing!” Yes friend, yes they are!
Back in January, I showed up to one of those sold-out Airborne shows earlier than usual. Though there were 300 people outside in line waiting on a prayer to get in, by the grace of my friend’s storytelling ability — or rather lying ability — we were able to sneak inside. We walked in and were met with a band of Newsies impersonators...no really, everone in Castledoor was dressed as 19th century newsboys. There were so many people on stage, I couldn’t keep track of what the hell was going on. During one song, their keyboardist crafted a good ‘ol fashioned sing-along as she ran through a series of cue cards. If you can’t make it to witness one of their lively sets, I recommend downloading "Magnetic Forces" to get you started. It’s my favorite song by far!
Ok, since I’ve been playing music supervisor all season I’ve been dying to tell you about a track that I would place in any film or show if given the chance! My buddy, who works next door to the lovely OurChart offices, stopped in the other day and dropped off “All Hour Cymbals” by Yeasayer — which, by the way, was awesome not only because of the whole free music thing but because he usually just comes over to steal food! He’d been listening to the album in his car nonstop and advised that I do the same. So I took his advice but...um, I haven’t been able to get past the first song, "Sunrise." I’m not going to say anything else except that I need you to download it now, and meet me back here to tell me what you think!
What is the name of the song when Adele is walking through the doors after being named the new director?? I listen at the lyrics but I can't find the name of the song. Help please :)
That is EZGirl or Betty I'm not sure. I do recognize the voice as being Elizabeth Ziff and maybe her sister Amy doing the background harmonies. It's very appropriate for the segment. I'm just sayin'.....
wow, THE L WORD never fails to showcase amazingly refreshing music. i always love the songs selected for specific scenes.. it's so obvious that a lot of thought goes into it. the end product is beautiful! :)
I'm in the process of downloading All Hour Cymbals as I type. "Sunrise" is awesome - 2080 is "enlightening." Was wondering just what genre they would fall under - read a short interview with singer/keyboardist Chris Keating on www.kevchino.com - he described their music as "Communal ecstatic revelry. Jovial chaos." Can't argue with a member of the band, but I'd just call it good karma music. Thanks for the tip - it's in the Zune!
So i just did what you told me to and downloaded Sunrise! As a DJ, if i at all think something is worth looking up on here then i give it a chance, and damn. They didn't even take 10 seconds to make me hit the download button!
Sweet Action ;)
btw, do you know what song was playin in the background when the girls were hitting the bong in this episode? Just curious.
