Picture, if you will, the “girl from Ipanema” sunbathing on the beaches of Rio. Now, imagine Peaches, Alice in Chains and maybe Fannypack crashing her lazy afternoon with caipirinhas (famous Brazilian cocktail, similar to a Mojito…yum!) and dragging her sun-soaked self to Carnival! If you can get a clear image of what that might look like, or rather sound like, then you’ll start to hear the music of a Brazilian import used in tonight’s episode, Bonde Do Role.



Combining the above-mentioned influences, along with a dash of their hometown “baile funk” or Brazilian funk, the band quickly caught the attention of famed British producer Diplo, whose name you might recognize if you’ve ever owned a M.I.A. record (ps, they were also an “item” for some time). Soon, BDR were traveling the musical globe opening for another Brazilian band you might of heard of, CSS or Cansei Der Ser Sexy! Now, I don’t speak Portuguese, but I’m going to take a stab and say that their band name translates to something along the lines of, “tired of being sexy,” and all I have to say in response to that is…tell me about it, guys! Oh, I kid!



You probably recognize the track "Music is My Hot, Hot Sex" from, you guessed it, an Apple ad—but I promise, this band can do a lot more than just sell iPhones. They’ll be headlining the NME Award shows later on this month, so if you happen to check them out, I’d love to hear about it! As for Bonde Do Role, after rumors of emcee Marina leaving the band and ending the group’s future, they’ve been added to the Coachella 2008 lineup. Whether or not Marina is still in BDR is uncertain, we’ll just have to wait till April and see. Until then, definitely download the track "Marina Gasolina," it reminds me of early M.I.A.
