The Gay Academy Awards?

On the red carpet a reporter from a mainstream media outlet stuck a microphone out at Jennifer Beals and asked something along the lines of “Are you excited to be here? This is the GAY Academy Awards for you people.” And as Ilene tells it, Jennifer lit into this reporter, asking her to clarify “you people.” Rock on, sister.

Jennifer Beals, Ilene Chaiken and Laurel Holloman met up in Los Angeles on Saturday night for the “Gay Academy Awards for us people.” We call it the GLAAD Media Awards. The Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation is probably the most visible of all our activist organizations because they advocate for our positive representation in the media. For the last 19 years, the GLAAD Awards have honored the people and agencies who’ve made that happen both in the news and entertainment.

LGBTQ visibility has made grand strides in the last two decades due in part to GLAAD’s role in educating media professionals and journalists. That poor journalist wasn’t so far off in that, the media awards have gone from hotel ball rooms to the Kodak Theatre where the Academy Awards are actually held. However, I would not have wanted to be the reporter to mess with Jennifer Beals. But hey, that’s how education works.

The first GLAAD Media Awards were held in 1990, with 34 nominees in seven categories. This year, there were 172 nominees in 40 categories. Jennifer and Laurel were attending the awards to present the Outstanding Comedy Series, which went to Ugly Betty.

The honorees of the evening included musicians Janet Jackson and Rufus Wainwright, and an award was posthumously given to photographer Herb Ritts.

At the end of the evening, Ilene shared the elevator with Rufus. Ilene told Rufus she knew his singer-songwriter father Loudon Wainwright III. Ilene said, “He wrote the song 'Synchronicity' about my ex.” Rufus chuckled and said that she was probably not the first lesbian he fell for.

“You told me on the freeway that you didn't sleep with men
I put two and two together… and I asked about your friend
It turns out she and though she loved my show
She too preferred the fairer sex — I absorbed the blow

It turns out that you did like men but didn't like their things
That hang down and all the hang-ups being with them always brings
My brother is so practical; this is what he said:
'You should have asked if it was cool to watch them both in bed'”
— Lyrics to "Synchronicity" by Loudon Wainwright III

Jennifer does rock ...

Jennifer is the shit -- LOVE her. Thanks for the bit of behind-the-scenes info and pics.

Jennifer is looking FIERCE! Work it, girl. Gah!

JB & LH finally together publicly ... very cute.

Melanie

Thanks for the shoutout! Made my day. I totally agree with Jennifer acknowledging and celebrating our love for her by giving us such an incredible performance of this monologue, holding nothing back. That smile after the African-American moan would melt a stone!!! Though a person would have to be dead not to be flattered by this, what I like is that she speaks of it not as, "oh all these women think I am sooo hot" but, "these women think I am doing a good job of representing them and I am honored to give my best to them, wherever I can." I LOVE that she is PROUD to be one of us, as an "honorary" lesbian.
This isn't something the lesbian community hears every day, especially from a straight woman. Is there any hope from any source that we might get to see the whole of Jennifer's monologue, and any others?

The brovo channel will be airing the awards show

Rufus' Sister Lucy

Loudon Wainwright III sired Rufus with folk phenom Kate McGarrigle, but he also sired Lucy Roche with folk phenom Suzzy Roche. For those of you who have never heard Lucy perform, by all means check her out. Here's her MySpace page:

http://profile.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=user.viewprofile&friendi...

Great songwriter; beautiful voice. I bet our indie music reporter, Kelly McCartney will back me up on this.

Mr. Motaterz opened for The Roches a couple Christmases ago in Santa Cruz and Lucy joined them on stage. Someone yelled up from the audience: "Whose daughter is she?" And Terre answered, "All of ours." I loved that.

Love and Light,
Melanie

"You People" is so wrong to

"You People" is so wrong to say to an African American PERIOD! Speaking from an African American point of view, that phrase is beyond horrible...words can't explain

The Woman Who Loved to Make Vaginas Happy

Okay speaking of Gay Academy Awards, I was out of town during the discussion of JB's V Day performance in New Orleans, but I've been wanting to say that as a huge fan of both Jennifer and The Vagina Monologues, I laughed so hard when the reports came back that Jennifer had performed "the moan" monologue. And not because I know the moans are the big crowd-pleasing orgasmfest that they are, but because of the first half of the monologue that didn't make it to YouTube.

When the editors first posted that the L Word crew was going to V Day, I just assumed that Jennifer was going to repeat her performance of the childbirth monologue. But the monologue Jennifer performed is called "The Woman Who Loved to Make Vaginas Happy" and is about a corporate lawyer who becomes a sex worker servicing lesbians.

Now I really, really, really am not comparing Jennifer to a sex worker or acting to prostitution, but there are some really funny parallels between Jennifer's journey to iconic status in the lesbian world and the character's journey in the monologue. The woman in the monologue discovers in her late 30s that she's really good at making women moan, so she decides to make her living doing that. And she particularly likes using props and wearing power suits. Sound familiar? I don't know Jennifer, but I'm really sure that irony is not lost on her, so I'm positive that these parallels didn't escape her notice or fail to amuse her.

Here's a longer version of JB performing "the moan" monologue: http://youtube.com/watch?v=XZHQ28IEveA

In Grace's blog from April 16, "Moaning in Superlove" Graphaks asked, "Do you think that Jennifer Beals knows that 6 gazillion lesbians have a crush on her? If not, someone please let her know. ; )"

My friend Susannah answered "I am sure that by crush you mean madly totally crazy in love, and to that I say.. only SIX gazillion? But then we gotta factor in all the straight women who join our ranks, especially after seeing this performance or vid! But indeed, I hope someone lets her know, though something tells me she already knows, and loves it."

So, yeah, I agree with Susannah: Jennifer knows and -- once again -- right on to JB for celebrating that by performing "The Woman Who Loved To Make Vaginas Happy" so brilliantly and unabashedly.

Love and Light,
Melanie

Own Your Moan: Amazing Grace

JB, Ilene, Alexandra and Daniela all did such a fabulous moan-tastic job - I was particularly delighted to see Ilene hanging out and rocking the O's.

http://youtube.com/watch?v=XZHQ28IEveA

Here's the transcript for the moaning section (I didn't transcribe it, I just snagged it from the internet, so it seems like it's okay to reprint it here. But by all means do buy a copy of The Vagina Monologues and support V-Day.) ...

"There's the clit moan, the vaginal moan, the combo, clit-vaginal moan. There's the almost moan, the right on it moan, the elegant moan, the Grace Slick moan, the WASP moan, the Jewish moan, the African-American moan, the Irish Catholic moan, the mountaintop moan, the baby moan, the doggy moan, the uninhibited militant bisexual moan, the machine-gun moan, the tortured Zen moan, the Diva moan, the college moan, and finally, the surprise triple orgasm moan."

Does any one want to say which moaner they most closely resemble? In the other thread, Meffle/Melanie says she stays in her ethnic truth. It's not possible for me to do that with one of the above since they didn't demonstrate a Norwegian/Irish moan. I'm guessing that would be a series of "ja ja jas" delivered in 6/8 jig time. The mind boggles.

I won't say which one is me, but I will that say that I aspire in all things to be more like Grace Slick (except the dropping acid thing, although I do try to feed my head.) JB does a great Grace Slick, eh? And now I wonder if our own Grace Moon was named after La Slick ... Ms Moon is just the right age to be Slick's namesake.

For you youngsters who don't know who Grace Slick is, here she is at Woodstock ...

Messin' With Jenn

"However, I would not have wanted to be the reporter to mess with Jennifer Beals."

I would love to be the reporter that messes with Jennifer Beals. Maybe if I'm bad enough she'll turn me over her knee and give me a proper spanking. Oh, baby. I'm gonna be bad!

Missed the Glaad Awards

I missed the Glaad awards on TV and can't see it when it plays on Bravo.

Can some tell me what JB & LH talked about on stage (besides the presenting of the award)? The pictures looked like it was pretty funny.

Jenny and Lu

LOL

I can not tell you. You have to see it for yourself to appriciate it. But i will tell you this it will definitly be worth it. Trust me.

Enjoy,

Shelly

Just sayin'

People may not intend to do it, but if you are going to compliment someone, like Laurel let's say, just leave it at the compliment. There is no reason to add the parts about her looking pregnant or not liking her dress, other than just HAVING to let us know your opinion. You're entitled to it, but your superficial dislikes could actually be kept to yourself. My Momma raised me to think that in most cases, "If you don't have something nice to say to someone, stfu." In early 2000 I decided to cut off what I referred to as my long, blond "barbie" hair. This was to prove all of my superpowers were not residing in my hair. I still shake my head remembering how many men and women just had to LET ME KNOW that they didn't like it. I heard to my face, "What happened to your hair?!" I had to remember my Momma so as not to reply, "What happened to your face?" or, "When you figure out what happened to your ass, we'll talk." Peace, Jodie

LOL

Right on Fastgurrrl! And I bet you're hot w/o the barbie hair!

stfu

That took me a minute to figure out. I think I'd really like your mother!
~paz y amor siempre

Thank you for saying that about my Mom

:) Peace, Jodie

Hmmm...maybe you should've taken your own advice with this post

Just sayin'...

Namaste

:) Peace, Jodie

LOVING Laurel's Hair!

LOVING Laurel's hair! Not loving the dress. Yes, she LOOKS pregnant in some pictures, but she's not. She is just hiding all that sexiness under a loose-fitting dress. She does look adorable though.

Actually...

I really prefer LH's hair blond and hope they switch it back before filming starts ... and leave JB's hair alone, too.

More for the eyes ...

Jennifer Beals is amazing...

and a true person. Though not a lesbian, she stands up for all who are. She is truly both incredible and admirable. You go girl!!! Not to mention both JB and LH are beautiful!! Hehe..... Also, i agree with a previous post of LH looking pregnant. At first glance of the pictures that was my first thought. Maybe its the dress, i dunno, but if she is pregnant congratulations to both her and her hubby!

LH preggers

After much speculation about her being pregnant again, The L Word actress Laurel Holloman has finally revealed why she wasn’t at the recent convention in London: she has just adopted a baby girl. It’s her second child with her husband Paul Macherey, as they already have a 3 1/2-year-old daughter Lola. No further information for the moment, but we’ll keep you updated! Congrats!

I have been reading the

I have been reading the comments all over again and I don't think the name calling is necessary, But "blissful ignorance" isn't flying with me either. It's scary enough to think that adults are that ignorant, but for one whose chosen profession is dealing with all kinds of people and situations to be that ignorant, and to say such a thing in the performance of her job, is IMO inexcusable. As pointed out, what if the reporter were referring to black or Jewish persons as "you people?' I am sure Jennifer was gracious with her, she wasn't rude to Deborah Norville, but she definitely spoke her mind, and I am sure she did here too. I do still hope that Ilene gives more detail of that enlightening conversation.

Yay J. Beals!

I absolutely adore Jennifer Beals for things like this. JB is not a gay woman, she is an actress that portrays a gay woman so it would be easy for her to just step away from the part at events and not be so involved in gay issues. BUT JB is as adamant about our rights and issues as we are. She represents and stands up for us at all times. She makes me so very proud! I could just see her ripping that reporter a new one haha. It's moments like that in which a lot of people would've just overlooked and not said anything to the reporter, but things need to be said to educate because it's freaken 2008 people! I love you Jennifer Beals! You are the greatest!

Who did the reporter work for?

Someone needs to call the boss and follow up with a What the fuck?

mrs beals

you are a star for a lot of reasons:

beautiful,gorgeous,amazing,SMART etc.....and so good actress...

probably the top gay icon over the world actually, maybe this status is uncomfortable for you,but it's a reality now and you have to do with this fact now ...

i love bette porter but i prefer jennifer beals ...

thanks for all....

i am not a lesbian ...i love you....

Sergio Mendes & Brasil '66 - The Look Of Love

Well like I always said, the inappropriater the better!! :) Not grammatically correct but it's what I always said!

Minnie are you running for Prez? I have some fabulous campaign promises you could make..all constituents get to meet and spend one day each with Jennifer...all appearances by Jennifer will be taped from all angles, including before and after sequences, and played continuously on OurChart, especially if there is moaning and sexy talk involved...We should have a weekly Jennifer appreciation day. There will be transportation provided to awesome events like New Orleans and the conventions and whereever else Jennifer is appearing, for all. Jennifer would be banned from wearing blouses that are buttoned and tied up to the neck. I could think of more but I guarantee these would bring you VOTES!

President ?

President of our chart? or what? PLEASE LET ME KNOW I WILL DO IT LOL. I will be checking for your reply.

Peace
Shelly

Campaign Slogan

I should start working on my campaign slogan:

"Minnie & Jennifer for America"

I am new here to the site and I love the L WORD!! It rocks!! Some people don't realize what ignorance really is so they open their mouths and insert the foot. You handled it well Jennifer I would have knocked her on her pretty little ass but hey thats me and I am not a public figure. You did great, I can't wait for the next season.

Same here

I absolutly love the l word. I have all of the dvd's and i taped the 5th season of which i plan on putting it on dvd a.s.a.p. if you want to email me it is earthquaker@ourchart.com ? i think that is how it works.
I look forward to talking to you.

Peace,
Shelly

Grace, You really started

Grace,
You really started something. I'm wondering what the context was in which the reporter made that comment. I admit it wasn't a bright thing to say, but haven't we all put our foot in our mouths at one time or another? Now I'm seeing people label her a "pig head" and a "homophobic reporter from heteroville." The power of the written word is amazing.

I love your post

Juniper, I love your post.

for the play by play

we have to ask Ilene, who was standing there and recounted this story to me yesterday by phone.

My impression was this was a well meaning female journalist, and was actually saying it out of blissful ignorance and not malice.

So yes, you're right it was not a gay bashing incident and needs to be clairifed. And deffinitely not necessary to let loose on her--here in our comments. Still the situation called for a correction.

Ilene did not say who this reporter was... for all I know it could have been Katie Couric !

:)

Hi Grace

I totoally agree with you. I am new to this site i am making friends slowly as i am not online much lol. I am transfereing to U.C.L.A. for my degree in writing, directing, and editing. I know that everyone here is on Jenny's side that is why they are being so overly protective of her as she has gone to the limit to help us all. I am proud to have her as a strieght representive for our cause. I would also like to know when the next L Word contest is for season 6. I have alot of ideas i have written several screenplays for them. I am putting them here on our forum but i have no clue when the contest is. I have sent my ideas to Ilene and NOthing. I know that she is extreamly busy with her family and the l word. Do you know if Jenny is on this site or if she reads it so we all can let her know of our appriciation of her wounderful talent. and see what she thinks of my ideas. Because i would like to run it by her first before i post them. I look forward to getting your reply.

Peace,
Shelly

That's what I thought

That's what I thought probably happened. I believe that most people are well-meaning, just ill-informed, and I'm sure Jennifer Beals was very gracious in her attempt to educate. Whoever the reporter was I'm sure she's learned her lesson, especially if she reads OurChart. :)

yep yep

I think the reported should have showed more respect but hey you dont know the reporter could have just got thrown in to being the reporter for glaad maybe the individual doesnt give good enough head to bosses who knows if it were me i would give just as much respect back which was none so it would have been a rumble lol Tara Tavish Cole

Go Jen!!!

WTF??? I thought 'you people" went the way of the BetaMax. What an idiot!!!

Good mainstream media coverage

Sometimes the mainstream media does do a good job in covering our LGBT community. This year the NY Times received two GLAAD awards:

Outstanding Newspaper Article: "Aging and Gay, and Facing Prejudice in Twilight" by Jane Gross (The New York Times)

Outstanding Newspaper Overall Coverage: The New York Times

I was especially pleased to see the article on aging and gay as this topic is seldom discussed.

author

yes minn

thanks for pointing that out. In fact I believe we discussed that times article here.

I actaully think diana talked about it. I'll have to dig into the archive and find it.

... ps. did no one find that piece of trivia about ilene and loudon wainwright as interestesting as i did?
