The Suit That Makes The Woman

I got a text today from a handsome boi I know, complaining that she can’t find a decent suit out in the market to save her life. I wanted to send her a text back with a laundry list of places where she could go in her hometown (which is not NYC) to shop for suits that fit a female body well, but aren’t cut all curvy and feminine. I was stumped. It made me want to do some investigating to see what is available out there for women who like to rock a nice, tailored masculine or androgynous suit look.

Women’s love affair with suits goes way back. Marlene Dietrich seduced women both on and off the screen when she appeared in a tuxedo suit and top hat in the 1928 movie Morocco.

Radyclyffe Hall, the best-selling British author of The Well of Loneliness (1928), bore a striking resemblance to her protagonist, Stephen Gordon, particularly in their love of suits.

k.d. lang is the dyke who stole my heart the first time I saw her strutting on a stage in a smoking jacket back in the early 90’s. Her love of a fine suit and her ability to work a dandy-esque crooner look still makes me weak in the knees.

We’ve even got female Japanese anime character that is famous for wearing a suit and being a lesbian with ambitions to be a racecar driver: Haruka Tenou.

My latest suit crush is the trans lead singer of The Cliks, Lucas Silveira. He brings a sexy rock-n-roll edge to the way he rocks a suit.

Where To Buy A Suit: High Roller — $1000 plus

For those slender and/or flat chested females whose challenge is finding suits that work with their smaller frames, you are in luck. The hot trend with the major high fashion designers is the Skinny Suit. Gone are the bulky, boxish, shoulder-padded man suits of the 80’s and 90’s. A somewhat 60’s, mod silhouette is coming back with the suit, especially with some hot labels like Gucci, PaulSmith, Ralph Lauren, and of course, Giorgio Armani. Most of these labels are available at Nordstrom or your local high-end men’s boutiques.

Gucci suits for Spring/Summer ‘08

One of my good friends, Summer, is a menswear Sr. Designer at Club Monaco and I have been paying more attention to what this brand is up to since she joined their team. One of my very androgynous exes always shopped for her suits at Club Monaco and I can see why. For about $150 per piece, you can put together a very dapper ensemble with a classic, modern cut that won’t go out of style.

Mid-Tier — $300 to $500

Other good bets in the mid-tier range are Ben Sherman and Zara. I have a feeling a lot of us fall under this category. Where can we go to get a nicely cut suit that isn’t going to cost us one month’s rent? Well, if you are lucky enough to live in a town (or country) that has an H&M, I’d start there. This retail chain does an amazing job of bringing the hottest styles from the runway to those of us who need to keep some of our cash flow for other things.

DIY Style — Less than$100

Okay folks, here is the bottom line: until more fashion labels start designing suits for the variety of female-bodied people out there — who want to dress in a suit that can make them look anywhere on the spectrum from super masculine to andro-chic — we need to fend for ourselves. My suggestion: go to your local thrift stores and find a suit that you love the cut and fabric/color of. Make sure it’s not too small for you in the chest, hip and butt areas. Take that suit to a local tailor and they will re-shape it to fit your body like a glove. Spend $15 on the suit at the thrift store, spend another $75-$100 getting it sculpted to your body.

Tailoring suits is an art form. I want to find out if there are any women out there specifically making suits for our diverse spectrum of aesthetics/styles within the general women’s community? If you are out there, give me a holler. I’d love to let our readers know about you! Also, special thanks to the fabulous Women In Suits site that helped me greatly with my research. I definitely want to explore this topic more deeply in the future.

I bought a complete tux at

I bought a complete tux at Keezers in Cambridge, MA for total $160 - all pieces were separate: jacket, slacks, shirt, etc. Was assisted / guided by a very well dressed dyke. And, referred to an excellent tailor. Tailor adjustments were another $30 for jacket sleeves / pants hemming. All in all, not bad.

well done...

Well a few months ago i happened to be in Bahrain and they have the best suit tailoring ever! i only paid about $160.00
and that is picking out the material and style, it was awesome! well i know not many people get to go to places like this one. but all i got to say is that your blog is a lot of help now i dont have to wait to go to places like Bahrain to find the perfect suit :) :)

Upper Mid Tier?

IS it just me, or did you leave out a tier? For the $500 to $1000 range I would recommend Deborah Hampton (who designed for CK and Kors and, last I checked only had a boutique on the west coast) for tailored womens suits + blazers that can be andro but maybe not butch enough for some, and Brooks Brothers (similar idea closer to $500).

On the cheap end Less than $100, true menswear small enough for the slim boi can be found in the guys section at Forever 21 - no lie.

IF you're into something really different Yoko Deveraux menswear in Brooklyn has casual fabric suits that are amazing $100 - $500.

I can make suits

When I graduated from college, I asked for sewing lessons as a gift from my folks. My mom, her mom, and her mom's mom all could sew like crazy, and only child that I was, I didn't want to let the tradition die with me!

I wear a suit (and tie!) to work almost every day. I agree that Zara has great stuff (especially inexpensive jackets), but pants that fit are almost impossible to find.

So sometimes I have to make my own stuff:
www.butterick.com
www.mccallpattern.com
www.voguepatterns.com

I've made a few things for friends and plenty of stuff for me, so I bet I could make a suit for someone else from a pattern if it weren't too complicated. Making a pattern fit correctly is all geometry, and thankfully I rock at that. :) Someone msg me and let's find out!

Let's talk...

Maybe there is a way I can help connect you with folks who want a custom-made suit.

Yay for suits!
I love me some suits, yes I do. I get mine from all over. Barney's New York sells the ultimate in up to the second high end fashion suitwear and everything they sell can be tailored to fit your shape easily enough. When the budget is tight, I head over to Karako Menswear for cheap Italian designer wool and poly blends. They have a tailor for basic stuff but I like to use my neighborhood tailor who is already familiar with what I like and how to alter suits to my taste. Sadly , he has retired and I shall have to search for a new suit doctor. Still, I suggest that any butch/boi/lesbo/etc who wants to rock a nice Men's suit (without looking like she stole big brother's rags) go out and find an actual tailor who can alter suits that you buy elsewhere. And stay away from those "ready to wear" numbers that they pawn off on us at places like Sears and JC Penny....no offense to those retailers, it's just that their stuff is not made to look good on the female body and it's a bitch to get altered. Hopefully, some sapphic entrepenuer out there will start an andro suit making extravaganza so that we can have our suits and wear them too!

Great advice....

always appreciated from a suit-wearing pro. Thanks!

Thanks CT

Thanks for sharing your experience of buying suits, CT. I've never tried buying a men's suit because I'm so short and worry that the amount of alterations would cost more than the actual suit. But maybe I'll give one a try.

From the other side of the coin

Here's *my* version of a suit for you. Schoolgirl entourage optional.
