On the eve of Super Tuesday, Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton offers up a message of support for the LGBT community. Read the New York Senator's guest post below.

By Senator Hillary Clinton
As I have traveled around the country these past twelve months, what I sensed in my heart has been confirmed – America is embracing its LGBT sons and daughters with an acceptance and understanding as never before. On the campaign trail, a father of a gay son will ask about ending Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell. A woman will ask why she can be discriminated against just because of who she is. Sometimes they wait furtively for the crowd to thin and then whisper their confidences in a soft voice and sometimes they stand up proudly at town meetings and want me to share my views on how I will help lead the change to assure that this country fulfills its promise to everyone.
Let me tell you what I have been telling voters across America. I am fully committed to the fair and equal treatment of LGBT Americans. For seven long years, the Bush Administration has tried to divide us - only seeing people who matter to them. It's been a government of the few, by the few, and for the few. And no community has been more invisible to this administration than the LGBT community.
I will change that. The best evidence of what I will do as President is what I have already done.
I am proud of my record as First Lady, as a U.S. Senator and as a candidate for President in working toward the fair and equal treatment of LGBT Americans.
· I am proud that as Chair of the Senate Democratic Steering and Outreach Committee in 2006, I worked closely with LBGT community to develop a smart strategy that defeated the Federal Marriage Amendment. I am proud of fighting the FMA as divisive wedge politics at its worst.
· I am proud to be a co-sponsor of the Employment Non-Discrimination Act, the Matthew Shepard Local Law Enforcement Hate Crimes Prevention Act, and the Domestic Partnership Benefits and Obligation Act which would grant the same benefits (including health insurance) to domestic partners of federal employees that are currently offered to employees’ legal spouses.
· I am proud to have authored the Early Treatment for HIV Act, which expands access to vital treatment options for low-income individuals living with HIV, and fought to fully fund the Ryan White CARE Act.
· I am proud that I hired a National Director of LGBT Outreach within a month of announcing my candidacy for President and to have openly gay and lesbian staffers serving at all levels of my campaign.
· I am proud to have a National LGBT Steering Committee of over 130 that includes openly LGBT elected officials, Board members and opinion leaders on issues ranging from transgender rights, to HIV/AIDS, to “Don’t Ask Don’t Tell”.
· I am proud to have marched in Gay Pride parades as both First Lady and as Senator and to have spoken in front of so many LGBT audiences ranging from the Human Rights Campaign, Empire State Pride Agenda, the Hetrick Martin Institute, PFLAG (Parents, Families, and Friends of Lesbians and Gays), GMHC (Gay Men’s Health Crisis), and the American Foundation for AIDS Research.
· I am proud to have fought Republican efforts to demonize and marginalize the LGBT community, and I will continue to do that as President.
We have so much work to do. When I am President, we will work together to make sure that all Americans in committed relationships have equal benefits and that nothing stands in the way of loving couples who want to adopt children in need. We're going to expand our federal hate crimes legislation and pass the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and assure that they are both
fully inclusive of sexual orientation and gender identity. And finally, we will put an end to the failed policy of Don't Ask, Don't Tell. Courage, honor, patriotism and sacrifice – the traits that define our men and women in uniform – have nothing to do with sexual orientation.
My father was a conservative Republican, who held very traditional views for much of his life. Yet in his last years, it was a gay couple who lived next door who provided much of the compassion and comfort he and my mother needed as he grew ill. And it was that same neighbor who held his hand as he died. If my father can move, America can move.
To each and every LGBT American, I say this. You have done so much to help this country understand your lives by simply being open and honest about who you are and living your lives with dignity. Thank you for your courage. It is time that we recognize your hard work. I know that this country is ready for changes in the law that reflect the evolution in our hearts.
America deserves a President who appeals to the best in each of us, not the worst; a President who values and respects all Americans and treats all Americans equally no matter who they are or who they love. I want to be that President. I want to be your President.

Todays posting diversity gives something both democratic front runners need to be beat over the head with. Don't burn too many bridges in the fight to win the nomination or we are left with a divided party. A divided party could give us eight years of republican rule. I don't about any of you, but I quake with fear what that will do to the supreme court.
Just a guy, but not just any guy!

Hormonal
Men can be angry, assertive and emotional but women are "hormonal". Men can be condescending and spoken word sharp, but women can't. If Hillary wasn't smart, hadn't been involved in governing our nation and didn't have substance, I wouldn't be supporting her "just because she is a women".
These two candidates are being hired for the most important job in our nation and for me, experience counts!
Unfortunately, her spouse, President Clinton, knew a woman other than his wife. It wasn't a romance but the woman serviced him. For that, a misdemeanor, he paid a high price.
We have a second chance to be governed well by the Clinton's. Let's not blow our chances on a will-o'-the-wisp.
Barack Obama has been acclaimed as virtually the Second Coming, but I am not sure what he can do. He has not written one bill in the Senate. His church is involved with Farrakan (black Muslim) and the Methodist Church he goes to is said to be racist against whites. I am not comfortable with turning over our nation to someone with those ties. I apologize if I have offended anyone. Only my opinion from what I have read.
In Hillary We Trust
The more I see, the more I like Hillary. Here's a video from Feb 07. She's relaxed, articulate... and specific
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cwYKIsJwi2c&NR=1
Here's a link to her reluctant support of the war powers act. It may be her Archille’s heel, but it's good to see her vote in context

May the best person win (and I hope it's Hillary)!
Hillary wants you to vote for her because she's a woman..
Dear Intelligent Sisters of Our Chart:
It's time for us to apply our intelligence to politics, not just once every four years, but regularly. Like the Europeans do. Most everywhere in the world people are amazed at the state of US politics, and how ignorant Americans are about what goes on with their government.
Meanwhile-
this is the silliest thing I have ever seen. A bunch of smart women practicing crotch politics. Let's get real. The Clintons are out for number one and sadly women and gays are getting sucked into a very bad cause. THE ONLY WAY that Dems can lose this race is if HILLARY is the candidate. Because she will turn out all the knuckledraggers among the Republicans, while most progressives will stay home. That includes all the anti war folks, (Hill has been a big war and Bush supporter) and most of the kids.
Meanwhile- what has she really done?
Passing this on for those who are really considering her a good choice- JUST because she's a woman. How shallow can we be??
FW:
Let's take a closer look at who's really qualified and or who's really working for the good of all of us in the Senate. Obama or Clinton.
Senator Clinton, who has served only one full term - 6yrs. - and another year campaigning, has managed to author and pass into law - 20 - twenty pieces of legislation in her first six years.
These bills can be found on the website of the Library of Congress www.thomas.loc.gov, but to save you trouble, I'll post them here for you.
1. Establish the Kate Mullany National Historic Site.
2. Support the goals and ideals of Better Hearing and Speech Month.
3. Recognize the Ellis Island Medal of Honor.
4. Name courthouse after Thurgood Marshall.
5. Name courthouse after James L. Watson.
6. Name post office after Jonn A. O'Shea.
7. Designate Aug. 7, 2003, as National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
8. Support the goals and ideals of National Purple Heart Recognition Day.
9. Honor the life and legacy of Alexander Hamilton on the bicentennial of his death.
10. Congratulate the Syracuse Univ. Orange Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
11. Congratulate the Le Moyne College Dolphins Men's Lacrosse Team on winning the championship.
12. Establish the 225th Anniversary of the American Revolution Commemorative Program.
13. Name post office after Sergeant Riayan A. Tejeda.
14. Honor Shirley Chisholm for her service to the nation and express condolences on her death.
15. Honor John J. Downing, Brian Fahey, and Harry Ford, firefighters who lost their lives on duty. Only five of Clinton 's bills are, more substantive.
16. Extend period of unemployment assistance to victims of 9/11.
17. Pay for city projects in response to 9/11
18. Assist landmine victims in other countries.
19. Assist family caregivers in accessing affordable respite care.
20. Designate part of the National Forest System in Puerto Rico as protected in the wilderness preservation system.
There you have it, the facts straight from the Senate Record.
Now, I would post those of Obama's, but the list is too substantive, so I'll mainly categorize.
During the first - 8 - eight years of his elected service he sponsored over 820 bills. He introduced
233 regarding healthcare reform,
125 on poverty and public assistance,
112 crime fighting bills,
97 economic bills,
60 human rights and anti-discrimination bills,
21 ethics reform bills,
15 gun control,
6 veterans affairs and many others.
His first year in the U.S. Senate, he authored 152 bills and co-sponsored another 427. These inculded **the Coburn-Obama Government Transparency Act of 2006 - became law, **The Lugar-Obama Nuclear Non-proliferation and Conventional Weapons Threat Reduction Act, - became law, **The Comprehensive Immigration Reform Act, passed the Senate, **The 2007 Government Ethics Bill, - became law, **The Protection Against Excessive Executive Compensation Bill, In committee, and many more.
In all, since entering the U.S. Senate, Senator Obama has written 890 bills and co-sponsored another 1096.
An impressive record, for someone who supposedly has no record according to some who would prefer that this comparison not be made public.
He's not just a talker.
He's a doer.
Pass it on....It's impressive
Hmmmm, apparently we are
Hmmmm, apparently we are intelligent enough to quickly discoverer that what you posted about their respective legislative records is something viral on the Internet that various Obama supporters are posting on blogs throughout the 'net. And that it is misleading.
People if you want to research this yourselves, please go to the correct link for Library of Congress' THOMAS database:
http://thomas.loc.gov/
I do not tolerate misleading info about either of our Democratic candidates, just so you know.
Your numbers are incorrect

You made it look like you found this information on that website and you did not. Here is the page with the same information. Scroll down for the long comment and you can see the exact same information.
You did not read the original source yourself and the link is dead. So no one can double check. The original writer also confused author, sponsor, and co-sponsor.

Ron Paul endorses gay marriage:
http://www.queerty.com/news/ron-paul-on-gay-marriage-20071210/
Listen to Ron address the topic of homosexuality in questions from a lunatic fundamentalist Christian:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zIeW0DY64bE
"We don’t get our rights because we’re gays or women or minorities. We get our rights from our creator as individuals. So every individual should be treated the same way. If there is homosexual behavior in the military that is disruptive, it should be dealt with. But if there’s heterosexual sexual behavior that is disruptive, it should be dealt with. So it isn’t the issue of homosexuality. It’s the concept and the understanding of individual rights."
-Ron Paul in Republican Presidential Debate, June 5th, 2007

John Stossel (interviewer): Homosexuality...should gays be allowed to marry?...the states say we believe in this?
Ron Paul: Sure. They can do whatever they want, they can call it whatever they want just so they don't expect to impose their relationship on somebody else. They can't make me personally accept what they do but they can...gay couples can do whatever they want. Matter of fact, I liked to see all governments out of the marriage question. I don't think it's a state function, I think it's a religious function.
Reasonable Ron
thanks for these links! if only he wasn't being "killed thru ommission" by every channel and online major newspaper in and outside of the nation! Even the vids about Ron Paul being censored by the mainstream media are being removed from youtube! And his name has been left off some voting machines...
So much for our "freedom"...
well now she has my vote
well now she has my vote
Go Lady!
I have and will vote for Hillary! I don't think anyone else can do what needs to be done for our country! We need strong leadership without millionaire agendas and oil wars! WE need unity in this country! I say vote for who ever you want! Just vote, take a stand and make your vote count! Study the candidates history, not their smooth talking..."gonna tell you what you wanna hear" "suck assing"
There is not one of those people running for president that hasn't done something in their past that they are ashamed of....they are human! Peace, love and unity to all of you!
Wait, wait, wait...
Not long ago I saw an interview on television in which rs Clinton was asked, "Why are you against gay marriage?" and she replied, something to the effect of, "Well, I'd rather think of it as being very positive about civil unions." A civil union is not equality.
As amazing as it would be to have a woman in the white house, this particular one seems to be talking out of both sides of her mouth.
Which is it, Ms. Clinton?
You won't get that from anyone
...Who's still in the race. The only candidate to brazenly speak for gay marriage and call it that was Dennis Kucinich. Obama is also not willing to take the plunge and back gay marriage. It's suicide for either candidate, sadly. And Obama has had an anti-gay minister/gospel singer headline one of his rallies, despite please from Joe Solmonese and other civil rights activists. Apparently, he'd rather have the black religious vote than ours. That is the moment when I took a more serious look at Hillary Clinton and realized I should have been doing so from the beginning, for myriad reasons.
she spoke from one real mouth
I believe you're mistaken my dear. Senator Clinton actually said that as much as she would like to see gay marriage, that you have to be realistic and work for what is achievable now, namely civil unions. This is a very complicated issue that involves state rights. It is crucial to work for what is possible now. If we can get a federal law giving us all the same federal benefits afforded to marriage, but called something different like "civil union" I'll certainly take it. The word "Marriage" is so tied up with religious traditions in this country and so emotionally charged
that some people just can't see past that. Senator Hillary Clinton is our best hope for the GLBT community and our country. She has my vote and my partner's, too! Musicmaker
We need to get out the vote!!
I made a little rap song called "Get Old or Die Tryin'" and in it I have a little inspirational verse that references Hillary - she is a superstar - she will make the best president the country has ever seen. She is passionate and has the planet's best interest in mind.

This is history - big time history
Chicas! We're talking woman president -first ever in history - she will make changes that noone - not even Obama will make. This is our one shot to step up with her and make it happen - it won't happen if we're all apathetic and just succomb to momentum. Get involved - stay in touch - talk to people - inspire!!! Women all over the world need Hillary as the president of the USA. She has a perspective that no man can ever have - she's a sister and damned good one - This opportunity comes once in a lifetime - I don't see any women coming up on the horizon. Of course that's another subject - but, if you're an overachieving, smart, passionate woman - think about politics. we need you!! We need women like you!!!
Let's care about eachother - we do anyway - we're compassionate, nurturing, and collaborating - it's what we do - do it with your friends and colleagues. Let's GO HILLARRY!!!

What changes? Her and Obama
What changes? Her and Obama are very similar in their stance and either of them are actually trying to really reach the people to be their voice without risking their real representation, which is huge corporations. The only thing I do see as being different is she is a women and he is considered not white....and they both sold their voice to mega corporations to be in the position they are in.
So what actual change are either of them bringing? Just a different face to look at and a different ass to fuck...

it's amazing how everyone
it's amazing how everyone gets so worked up about Hilary and Obama, I've seen a few of obama's speech's somehow ends with there needs to be change, or something like that...interesting, I love to rant about Ideals and dreams of change lol..not really. I'm sure he's a nice guy that has rich peeps ( coff Oprah Coff )supporting he's campaign,I like what Hilary had to say about certain Educational tuition alternatives... she sounds like she could get alot done in office. It doesn't really matter who wins this time around, regardless there will be change.
it's nice to see
I know that neither Obama nor Clinton support Gay Marriage but that they both support civil unions. Even though it is a step from where we are it's not ever what we want to see. Even though I'm still up in the air about who I'm going to vote for. I'm still reading through Obama's and Clinton's sites every day. I actually think I should give myself a break from it all. So even though I'm still going back and forth, it's nice to finally see candidates willing to give us something.
Your Choice of President
Here the website of a quick survey to see how your views compare to the views of our presidential candidates:

I wasn’t surprised about my results, but you may be. At least, it's worth a try!
I like it . . .
Not hugely surprising here either ("you are far away from Mike Huckabee" -- yay!), but I was closer to Obama than to Clinton (I'm wavering).
A MUST READ.. a provocative, disturbing article re: Hillary C.
Regardless of whose candidacy you are supporting, or what your political persuasion is, this article by Robin Morgan on Hillary Clinton is a scathing, searing expose of how she has been treated during this campaign, and is worthy of your attention.
Please don't misunderstand...I really like Barack Obama, and I am in no way disparaging him. In my view, he is a good man, and an inspiring candidate. Both my adopted children are African-American, and while this hotly contested nomination should not be about race (or gender), it has not escaped them that this man who has their skin color is running for the presidency.
Robin Morgan is a long time feminist and coined the phrase "sisterhood is powerful." Regardless how you personally feel about feminism or feminists, please read for a perspective that in my view should deeply alarm us, wake us up, and call us to action. This kind of behavior aimed at women cannot and should not be tolerated by anyone. The "generational divide" plays no role here...what she talks about concerns us all, women and men.

thank you
I e-mailed this to a significant contingent from my address book, and feel it's worth risking offending those who would not like to receive political messages from friends. If Obama's supporters can do it, then we MUST!

Clinton Switches Campaign Managers
This just in:
Hillary Clinton is switching campaign managers. According to Reuter's News Service:
"Maggie Williams, a top aide to Clinton when her husband Bill Clinton was president, has taken over from Patti Solis Doyle as campaign manager.
Aides to Clinton, a New York senator who would be the first woman president, played down any notion that the staff change was a signal of trouble for her campaign.
Solis Doyle will move into the role of senior adviser to Clinton during the remaining state-by-state races for the Democratic nomination to contest the presidential election in November."
Hillary and GLBT
I find it ridiculous that whether Hillary supports us openly is even an issue.
She has been marching in Gay Pride Parades since she was first lady. She marched in 2000 when she was running for the Senate. This is from the NY Times: “Mrs. Clinton, who happened to be behind a group called the Radical Faeries, which featured a man on skates who wore nothing but a silver cape, a tiara and a jockstrap, was so popular the police had difficulty controlling the crowd.”
Mrs. Clinton said. ”I think that anyone who would run to represent the state of New York should run to represent all New Yorkers.”
She has taken more crap from right-wing hacks for supporting us than almost anything else. This a false issue folks.
Also, I keep seeing the link to Obama mentioning gay rights at Ebenezer Baptist Church in Atlanta. It wasn't much of a risk. How many in attendance would then say, "Oh, no. He supports the gays. We're not going to vote for him now."

I'm not questioning Hillary's support
I'm questioning the link placement of her statement on her website. It really was hard for me to find, and I LIKE Hillary and knows she supports us. I just think Obama's website design is smarter and more usable because he has a top category called, People.
This is my last comment about Hillary's links for today because I must now go do something else important like support women's NCAA basketball. :-)
Minnie, I don't think you did it
But others are using web page organization as sign that Hillary wants to hide her support of and from GLBT. That is what I find ridiculous.
Anyone with a problem with her web page design should contact her web master.

I did!
I did! I did submit a suggestion about the website design for Hillary Clinton's campaign. I doubt, at this point, it will change though.
interesting
i actually spent a lot of time at both their websites this past week looking at issues and comparing. i agree that obama's design is more usable and it appears as if he 'wants' people to find all of the things pertaining to issues on his site, including his stance on the lesbian gay issues. clinton's site on the other hand was a total pain in the butt and had i not been looking for specific information with my own purpose, i prob. wouldn't have found it.

Well...
Oprah probably paid for Obama's website...
Hillary's link to LGBT statement
Dammit. This effing site keeps losing my comment replies. This is my third attempt to post something on this.
Regarding the link to Hillary's LGBT statment off of her website. It is under a not obvious category called, "Strengthening Our Democracy." Really, I had a hard time finding it. That bothers me.
Obama's website has a link, LGBT, under the category, People. It is much easier to find. So, in reply to Rusty, it is not a matter of number of clicks, but a matter of link categories and their placement.
UPDATE: I see the link now on the Strengthening Our Democracy page on the upper left side. I had gone to the page before but didn't spot the links on the upper left. My eyes were drawn to the large box on the right. So this could be a matter of website design. Obama's design works better for me. And demonstrates how design can influence how you locate and comprehend content.
More: I wouldn't have thought to look under that category for her statement on the Hispanic community either.
Sorry that I keep editing this comment, but my technical difficulties with posting were giving me a headache this morning.
GO HILLARY!!!!!!!!!
She's great.
She's a feminist.
She's a woman.

Gay marriage
He may not be afraid to say "gay" in public but he also does not support gay marriage.
Well...
Hillary doesn't support gay marriage either.....get your facts straight...even if you're not.
i didn't know where to post this...
so since this is a popular discussion I thought I'd just add it here.
Please give this a minute of your time. Who knows, perhaps it WILL make a difference. If someone can post it somewhere more prominent with better exposure please do so.

Is Huckabee a threat?
Obama took all three states today, but I noticed that Huckabee seems to be looking like a bit of a threat:( All the talk about strategy of Mitts bailing out to give his voters votes to McCain?

Obama's record...
Much of Obama's support is derived from claims that his record as a STATE legistlator. Many of his supporters take his claim at face value that he can work in NATIONAL political arena even though he barely served for 1 year before deciding to run for president. First of all, do we really believe that he truely understand the deep interests at work on the national level such that he can work to bridge that deep divide created by the Bush's bully pulpit administration? We can only look at his prior experiences in the state level to see what actually happened on contentious issues. Obama boasts of his bipartisan work on two issues - and the NYT written articles about what actually happened.

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/02/03/us/politics/03exelon.html?_r=2&hp=&ore...
We see that his bipartisanship leadership is just very poor comprosmise to the special interest. How is that better? People who think that he can make politics work differently don't understand how negotiations actually work in politics. Perhaps he doesn't even know how it works in National politics because he hadn't the experiences yet. So why is it that we just accept his claims without scrutiny? I agree that when a candidate has never been tested, he can speak to his ideals much more truthefully. If I were a politician, I can speak to my hopes and ideals with a lot of passion too, but I know that once I am placed in the reality of world, these special interest will require skills that deal with politics as usual.
Obama has a better record about not saying things directly that could damage himself. He is not willing to stand up for any issue strongly and take heat for them. On contentious issues, he votes present. He doesn't have a record on abortion because he voted Present on every abortion legislation in the Illinois legislature. He voted present on the Kyle Liberman admendment but then come back and say he *would have* voted against it. That is NOT what we want from our leaders. We need leaders that can demostrate strong convictions and be able to stand up for people that need strong advocates and make americans make difficult decisions about reality without engaging them in false hope based on rhetoric and no track record.
On the national town hall Hillary hosted on Feb 5, she talked about LGBT issues. That is a lot of visibility for an issue that does not need to be for many people. This is why I support Hillary. Watch it here:

Obama is just another politician like everyone else, he is flawed like everyone else.

Obama is more of the same - not different. He is trying to get elected by talking up his personality and avoid the issues. That's the way Bush got elected. Change is the american voters looking deeper into a candidate and make decisions about the issues.
Obama-the truth is in the details.....
Thank you for you comments. I went to some of the websites you posted and agree with you. Obama is preaching and omitting the details of his platform. His record speaks for itself-not much! The media got President Reagan into office and they are now doing the same for Obama.
Hillary has my support and vote.
Thank you ooneh.....
Truth is easy, rhetoric is hard
I'm just sayin'.....
Not Surprised
This article was all about Hilary, but I knew that somebody would flip it and scold Obama. Can we digest her issues, before you bad-mouth another candidate?
I just dont want to read about your (underlying racism) distrust of another candidate.
Opps...
Obama's black??? Crap I thought he was purple.
Who flippin' cares what color he is Misty...
I'm voting for Hillary, and not because Obama is black...or purple.
Oh, so not supporting Obama
Oh, so not supporting Obama is being an underlying racist? Please tell me why that is?

Rover, I go away for half a day...
...and come back to find you making trouble... AGAIN!
Well, I think Misty may have jumped the gun on the underlying racism note in this particular case, but there certainly is enough of it out here to go around. What we need to be mindful of, in my opinion, is not to look at the same dirty politics this country has always engaged in, and assign it to racism. At least not before we have some evidence. Our political and campaign system is run on mud slinging and name calling. It's not enough to say "I'm good," now it seems we have to say the other guy is bad, regardless of whether or not that's true. It's a shame really, especially in the primaries. I wonder if at the end of it all, old hurts will be healed enough to band together to engage the fight ahead.
There's a thin line...
I agree she jumped the gun
Yes, Meffle, I agree that commenter jumped the gun by stating the other commenter had underlying racism due to her analysis of Obama. Obama's record should be open to thoughtful criticism on his record and the issues, just as should Hillary's.
