A note from Jennifer Beals:
As promised, below is another segment from my interview last week with Tobias Wolff, chair of the National LGBT Policy Committee for the Barack Obama campaign. In this video, Professor Wolff replies to your questions about important hate crimes legislation, the Employment Non-Discrimination Act and violence against gay youth. I hope the material discussed here continues to be useful, and above all, encourages more of the inspired questioning, debate and ownership of the issues at stake in this election.
Thank you,
Jennifer

Video 2 pt 2
TW: In the case of employment nondiscrimination, the House passed a version of that bill. A very difficult issue for the LGBT community this year has been that the House passed a version that doesn't include gender identity. It protects against sexual orientation discrimination, not gender identity discrimination. I'd love to talk a little bit more about that, that's an issue that Barack has actually a great track record on and has taken some very strong positions on, in this campaign. He's already been a part of, and a major part of getting a fully inclusive anti-discrimination law enacted in the state of Illinois, the Illinois Human Rights Act. He is a very strong supporter of fully inclusive employment nondiscrimination at the federal level. He has pledged to implement policies of nondiscrimination for federal employees, for federal contractors, that include gender identity in their protections.
JB: MISSIR would like to know what can and will Obama do about youngsters who are kicked out of their homes simply for being LGBT.
TW: Like so much else having to do with youth and families, these issues get dealt with at the state level, and you know, once again, it's just how our government is structured. But what Congress can do is to make funds available, and to make funds available that specifically address the issue of LGBT discrimination, and it is an issue that frankly I think has not been as much a part of the national discussion about LGBT issues as it should. So one thing that a President can do is to show leadership on making funding available that is specifically targeted to the challenges and the needs faced by LGBT youth. A second thing that a President can do is to appoint really good judges. One of the things that he says is, "I'm going to appoint judges who recognize the humanity of people who are not like themselves. I'm also going to appoint judges who look like the people they are going to be presiding over.
JB: So that explicitly means that he would look to nominating someone who is gay.
TW: Absolutely. And it's about time. It's about time. We have one member of the Federal Judiciary, one member of the entire Federal Judiciary, who was appointed as an out gay person. It's a lesbian by the name of Debbie Batts, Judge Batts, in the southern district of New York, appointed under the Clinton presidency. There are other judges who have come out after coming onto the bench, but we are way behind in that regard, and in many others.
JB: Absolutely.

Aint Burning no more.................. Obama Won. Cant tell you how happy i am after what happened in Texas but just as i predicted the bias British media have yet to report this victory. I live in the uk and i support Obama 10001% go for it O You rock, but the British media is corrupted its disgusting. They never report victories by Obama, Hillary victories are reported on every cable television network at 15 minute intervals i mean how the fuck does this shit happen. oh well at least he won muahahahahahahahahahahaha victory
Don't agree with ur comments but do agree with ur Tbette views!
I don't agree with you at all!!!
There have been plenty reports on Obama on BBC News 24 & Channel 4 news and plenty coverage on his campaign on their websites too.
They're both highly regarded news channels/progs and not corrupt as you suggest. Even more so - BBC news is an independent corporation - not owned by or allied to any political persuasion and has always been known worldwide as a reputable source of news!
If however, you've been watching Sky news...I unreservedly apologise because they really are crap and suggest you CHANGE THE CHANNEL!!!!! Surely you know that Sky is owned by Rupert Murdoch...your favourite Fox News owning muppet...surely NO-ONE in the US watches Fox News unless they're married to their cousin's half-brother's dog and the Nascar's not on?!
Either way, I do concede that there may have been slighty more coverage of Hilary over the past few days but solely because it's been a real crunch time in her campaign and there's been so many questions hanging over whether or not she's gonna drop out...
Always remember you're unique.
Just like everybody else.
sure
if you say so but i know what am talking about, channel four yeah because its at seven. Bbc news 24 are you serious. Sky news you've got to be kidding me i dont even watch channel five shiit, last time hillary won in texas i could hardly get away from that but when o wins you KNOW WHAT FORGET THIS SHIT. Oh and actually the bbc isn't independent its associated with the british government. Hence the name british broadcasting corp. No offence to you but thats why its mostly founded by tv lience(sorry if not spelt right ) hence no adds if you were to say itv or channel four was independent i would agree but no not the bbc. No way bbc parliament come on man i know what your sayin but i also know what i've seen and what am talking about.
You have to remember though
You have to remember though that compared to CNN and Fox the BBC actually comes across as extremely reasonable, especially because the government licensing, problematic as it may be, means that it has to give equal play to different political viewpoints. Public broadcasting standards are far more objective than those decided by Rupert Murdoch.
Fox is all republican all the time. I have no doubt that your critique is probably right on but in comparison to American media it looks much better.
motaterz..
Hi, I am sorry I am not getting to this. Time just is getting away from me. Yes, if you can, you can take the next bit, or I can get to it on Thursday, whichever is easier.

The Tuesday Morning Round-Up ..
A few quick things ...
1. Eliot Spitzer
Just wow. And just when the Dems are threatening to take back the NY State House in Albany. Yikes. But the Lieutenant Governor, David Patterson, is fabulous -- a blind biracial Democratic dynamo from Harlem.

So we shall survive it. But yikes.

Thanks again to Susannah for doing the lion's share of the transcribing and to OC Editor Lisa for compiling, posting and linking. Susannah - I can do some more of the transcribing on this second video -- lemme know if you need some help.
3. Someone else is finally talking about how racist Clinton's 3AM Red Phone commercial is. Here's an OpEd piece from today's NY Times.

Love and Light,
Melanie
With all the talk about race
I wonder if and how having a black governor of NYS will impact the presidential campaign/election. This should prove interesting.
There's a thin line...
The next part of the interview?
Sorry if I missed a post somewhere, but when will the next part of the interview be posted?
Also curious
Is there more to come?
This election is not looking good
The more I read about Hillary and Barack, I get depressed. Let's forget all the other reasons for now, how can someone be so against discrimination, and yet both fall short of gay marriage? That one fact seems to be hitting me in the head...who do you believe?
Right now they both could be lame duck Presidents and for all the new voters - will your activism prevail? Or with say Barack will you actually stay involved and just care about all human beings, straight or gay, homeless, etc.
I only hope someone does something in a positive direction and I hope the community puts their money where their heart is...where ever that may be.
The way I see this is that
The way I see this is that while they both do fall short of gay marriage, they are a step in the right direction. Realistically, at this moment, there will NOT be ANYONE in the White House who will give us complete equality. It just will not happen. So, we need to go for the candidates who will bring us a step closer to the goal.
I have a hard time understanding why people cannot see the bigger picture on this issue. It is better to take baby steps forward than nothing at all. This country is seemed in bigotry, ignorance, and hate, so going from nothing to everything with Gay issues is unrealistic and impossible. Instead, we need to look those candidates that will give us momentum forward. There has never been a single movement that has had overnight change. It takes time, it takes slow, forward progression. THIS is what the democratic candidates are bringing us. So, rather than get discouraged, think about the steps we are making and how that will bring us closer to the ultimate goal -- equality.
Oklahoma legislator's anti-gay comments stir hostile reaction!!!
http://youtube.com/watch?v=BPB7bTdz2xQ
Yes, I'm sorry to say that I live in Oklahoma and this woman has created quite the hostile reaction because of her comments.
Any reactions from you guys??? I'll be happy to print them off and send them to our state legislation. I know that most of you won't be from Oklahoma, but it might just raise some eyebrows if I can send MILLIONS of letters.....
It's 2008 for God's sake!!!!
what the fuck...people like this piss me off
poor you Barney-is this bitch going to be bounced out of the legislature? who the hell is this woman talking to, who would listen to this shit? the homosexual agenda???? indoctrination of 2 year olds-societies with a gay lifestyle don't last more than 2 decades??!!!!!!!!! Please tell this cunt to take her hate and shove it up her ass!!!!!!!!! when i'm calmer i'll post a calmer response.
Thank you Monsoons...
yes, this woman is (as you can see) a "good old gal" from bumfuck nowhere Oklahoma, and it looks like even her Republican constituants are being very very quiet on this issue........YEAH, we're here "recruiting" 2 year olds for our lifestyle!!!!!
She was talking to a group of republicans and "didn't know she was being recorded." RIIIGHT!!!
they held a press conference today (haven't seen it yet), but the entire state is up in arms and it doesn't look like she'll be around much longer....old gal has even gotten some death threats!! Guess she pissed off the wrong people, huh?
Anyway, don't calm down, it's when we get pissed off we get it done, RIGHT??
Thank you for your support, and I'll keep ya posted...
Miss J Beals.
she rocks so hardcore. what a great woman and role model.
go obama!
Just my opinion
It seems to me that Hillary, or those who support her, are trying to have it both ways, and that is not going to work. She is standing on her experience as First Lady to indicate her experience and knowledge of the White House and Presidential responsibilities, and everything she accomplished as First Lady, and everyone knows she was completely involved in Bill's presidency, yet when questions arise about possible wrongdoing or ethical violations by both of them, the attitude is one that she wasn't the President, she had nothing to do with anything that Bill did and so on and so forth.
It seems to me
That Hillary Clinton is a kick arsenick femme fatale of her own nurdy kind. She only gets hotter and hotter. Hillary is from the same generation as Aretha Franklin when women were taking a stand for R-E-S-P-E-C-T.
Drop the First Lady bit: that is an insult to Hillary Rodham Clinton's real intelligence. She was a leader who was inspired by Martin Luther King, Jr. among other leaders in her youth. After his assination in 1968, in college, she negotiated between students and faculty in which more African American faculty resulted. As a student at Yale Law School in 1973, she volunteered time to do free legal services at New Haven Legal Servives for people who were poor. In 1977, she co-founded Arkansas Advocates for children and families. As chair of Rural Health Advisory Committee for Arkansas in 1979, she expanded medical facilities in the poorest areas without adding doctors fees.
Hillary Clinton supports repealing the Ask Don't Tell policy so that women like me do not need to be afraid of serving the military justice system ten year prison sentence for serving our country. I would be retiring in a year if I had risked protecting our country while rising up the chain of command inside national security in exchange for my freedom to love outside the top secret box.
Hillary Clinton:
Fought against Federal Marriage Amendment
Supported anti-hate crimes legislation
Fought for AIDS funding and access to services
Supported equal benefits for federal employees
Participated in numerous LGBT events
Secured support for the Lesbian and Gay Community Services Center
For those decades that I marched, and those years I marched topless so that you all could be free, please do not Dis' My First Lady President.
Recall what Jack said, "There is nothing sexier than saluting a women the first thing in the morning." And, hey, I should know. I turned down a national security clearance for navy weapons satellite targetting before nine eleven.
Intelligence Operative Agent 99
That's it?????????????????????????????????
I thought this interview was going to be as long as the previous one. I know we asked a ton of questions. Is that all there is?
Tobias Wolff, Andrew Sullivan pulease men with interest that begins and ends with themselves. Get a woman in there to answer some questions.
There were so many great questions and ideas and I feel like we were geared up to hear some real answers and got nothing.
When God created Rachel she was just showing off.
www.RachelShelleyUnplugged.com
got nothing
My sentiments exactly. See way below my comment: Where's the beef? Hope we are not going to get constant dribbles just to keep Obama's name in our face for weeks up until the election...
That's nice ...
JB has said there will be several videos. This one was shorter than the first but chock full of info, imho.
Tobias Wolff strikes you as a man with interests that begin and end with himself? And because both he and Andrew Sullivan are gay men, they are to be equated? Wow, I could not disagree with you more on both counts. Oh well.
Since this offering from Jennifer clearly falls short in your book, please tell us what work you've done in the past couple weeks to promote basic human civil rights. Then we'll know what real advocacy looks like.
Thank you in advance,
Melanie
BTW...
Did anyone notice the JOHN MCCAIN advertisement on the side of this page or is it just me seeing this??
I might just be crazy...but I thought it was interesting that he has an advertisement here on ourchart.
actually the advertisement
actually the advertisement part is really funny, it's not a unified adverstisement for all users, it depends on the topics you are discussing. Right now there are half-naked 'real jock' gay men on the side of my screen. Dunno what bought that to my screen but it's still better than McCain for sure.
The dream ticket...shattered...
Someone said to me today that if Obama and Hillary end up becoming running mates and win...there will be three presidents in the White House. Obama, Hillary, and Bill Clinton....this person seemed to believe that since Bill Clinton had been president before he will probably be secretly briefed with the same information as Hillary and Obama will be briefed on. I don't know where he got that idea from but it was disturbing to me. I think I find it so disturbing because it could happen...you never know....
Re: Disturbing
How 'bout this one... here's a scary thought.
The bills that've passed since 9-11 have given Bush more power than what a lot of people realize. Bush signed a bill that gives his administration the power to cancel elections, giving himself dictatorial power, declaring martial law, in the event of a “national emergency”.
http://www.onlinejournal.com/artman/publish/article_2255.shtml
This bill here - The relevant part is Sec. 1076 about 3/4 of the way down.
http://www.govtrack.us/congress/billtext.xpd?bill=h109-5122
I think you made a great point!
The details we will never know if this campaign gets that far. But, Bill's past credit definitely gives Hillary an unfair advantage when compared to Obama. I wouldn't say three presidents exactly, but I'd bet he'd be advising her on what to do.
He is a liar, you know this. However, we will probably never know if he is helping her behind the scenes later on or not. It makes me sick to my stomach, but that's one of the personal reasons why I'm not voting for her. Take it or leave it.
Pres. Bill Clinton did a lot of bad things internationally that no one knew about publicly at the time, thus, not much will change with Hillary--regardless of experience. I think the tax returns are a HUGE indicator that she is like him, and while Bill did a lot of good, I simply don't want him in office again. Oh, wait, I meant her.
same song and dance
If not in the media it is here, where is the new tune?
I read the same information over and over. It will not change my opine about Hillary.
Why isn't there a celebratiy blogg for Hillary Clinton?
OurChart ladies, where is there a Lesbian celebrity Hillary supporter to create a Hillary blogg.
Lets create one.
Yeah...
"It will not change my opin[ion]e about Hillary."
I don't think anyone is really trying to change your opinion about Hillary.
Maybe you can get Ilene Chaiken to do one...she's a Hillary supporter...and I am not being sarcastic or anything, it would actually be interesting to have a Hillary supporter blog/interview/discussion thing...

I'm puking
OMG, I'm sick to my stomach!!! It's it too much that we have "tolerate" bigots like him......
Wait until Obama is the nom
The Rep will come at him from all sides ,you think it's bad with Hillary now ,lets see how HIS Rock Star status holds up with him then. The man has done nothing he has no record .When ppl are asked to name one thing he has done they can"t.The Rep will crush him in Nov.I want somebody who can win.Hillary has the know how and the record IMHO.
I don't know....
If Hillary wins the nominations the Republicans will come at her from all sides as well, the same thing will happen to Obama if he wins the nomination. Right now, McCain can rip apart both Obama and Hillary as the two tear each other apart.
The only way we lose in the
The only way we lose in the fall is if in typical fashion the democrats continue with their typical infighting about who can be the most liberal without actually calling themselves liberal.
The problem with a party of minorities is no one can pull their heads out of their asses long enough to see the problem is so much bigger than themselves. I honestly expect half of the supporters of of Obama and Hillary to be so stuck up when it comes to their candidate that they will refuse to vote in the fall for the other person.
We lack any unifying force and that is what let the republicans take congress in the nineties and then gave us 8 years of W.
Just a guy, but not just any guy!
http://bradleyandkaty.com/bradblog/
http://www.bradstinyworld.com
Yes I do
Yes I do want a Democrat in the White House, that is why I do not want Hillary. I don't see "nothing was ever proven" as in the same universe as completely free from involvement, and we know she was involved, and that just's what we know about. If women are not voting for Clinton in droves, including feminist women, I just think that thought could perhaps be given as to why.
I understand...
...that we are trying to get rid of anti-gay sentiments and people who encourage such things like...Donnie McClurkin...but people are people and we can keep fighting to get rid of these people...and nothing will really come of it. You can't force a person to think differently, we can only really put up laws to protect ourselves from possible actions that may follow the anti-gay words.
Basically, what I am saying is that I don't believe that this whole McClurkin crap is really that big of a deal. He's a gospel singer and anti-gay....and maybe Obama knows him and likes the guy's voice. Anyone ever think that maybe Obama does not believe in the guy's anti-gay remarks but actually likes the guy's voice. The "ex-gay" is a gospel singer.....personally, there are a lot of gospel singers that I know and like that may be anti-gay because of their religion. Why do we always looks into everything both candidates do with so much scrutiny. Anyone ever think that maybe its a simple reason why they do one thing....like maybe he just likes the guy's voice...why does everything have to be so damn political?
I'm not saying that anti-gay is ok...far from that. What I am saying is that you can not get rid of people like these...you can not change people unless they want to change themselves.
There are still a lot of anti-african american people...for goodness sakes, the Ku Klux Klan still exists as well as Nazi people. As long as they do not commit any act against the law, they are free to express themselves. This is called freedom of speech....which we happen to fight for. Just because they are against us does not mean they have no right to say anything. This is the United States...we can't fight for our freedoms and take away theirs either.
Now, I am not saying that what they say is right or proper or okay. I believe it is completely disgusting and they anger me but this is America...everyone has freedom of speech as long as they are following the law.
Why do we always looks into
Why do we always looks into everything both candidates do with so much scrutiny?
Because they may be running our country and making decisions that affect us all.
Duh...
...that's obvious...but really, what kind of music the candidate likes to listen to? What next? The type of undergarments they like to wear?
Personal opinions/preferences about their daily life isn't really that big of a deal. You can have a completely savy looking model like candidate and still have an idiot at making choices and you can have the smartest woman/man on the planet with the worst hygiene...
That's all I'm trying to say...
If he tells the world he
If he tells the world he goes commando that ought to generate enough buzz in the undergarment debate...
Image is everything. Like it or not we live in a country where substance has very little importance past the lip service we pay it.
Just a guy, but not just any guy!

This is not to defend Obama, but to show ya just never know with people... one way or the other.
Question 1:
If you knew a woman who was pregnant, who had 8 kids already, three who were deaf, two who were blind, one mentally retarded, and she had syphilis, would you recommend that she have an abortion?
Read the next question before looking at the response for this one.
Question 2:
It is time to elect a new world leader, and only your vote counts.
Here are the facts about the three candidates. Who would you vote for?
Candidate A.
He associates with crooked politicians, and consults with astrologist. He's had two mistresses. He also chain smokes and drinks 8 to 10 martinis a day.

And Finally, can you imagine working for a company that has a little more than 500 employees and has the following statistics:
* 29 have been accused of spousal abuse
* 7 have been arrested for fraud
* 19 have been accused of writing bad checks
* 117 have directly or indirectly bankrupted at least 2 businesses
* 3 have done time for assault
* 71 cannot get a credit card due to bad credit
* 14 have been arrested on drug-related charges
* 8 have been arrested for shoplifting
* 21 are currently defendants in lawsuits
* 84 have been arrested for drunk driving in the last year...
Can you guess which organization this is?
Give up yet?
It's the 535 members of the United States Congress.
The same group that cranks out hundreds of new laws each year designed to keep the rest of us in line.
Pretty interesting, eh? Makes a person think before judging someone.
Oh I don't disagree with you
Oh I don't disagree with you one bit, do you have a site where those stats on congress came from? I am just curious what else they have to offer up?

This was highly amusing and very interesting. Kind of mind blowing too.
Also, I do apologize if I offended you at all by responding with a "duh.." headline on your above post. It was not intended to demean you or dismiss what you were saying. It was merely a headline I did not think about. I do apologize.
No worries. It's takes more
No worries. It's takes more than that to offend me. Actually, I laughed at it. :)
But, yeah... interesting, eh.
